You can automatically start a stopped AWS Elemental MediaLive channel by routing a channel state-change event through Amazon EventBridge to a handler—such as AWS Lambda—that checks the channel’s current state and calls the MediaLive StartChannel operation when the channel is truly idle and restarting is safe. MediaLive handles recovery of failed pipelines while a channel is already running; that is different from starting a channel that has stopped.
First distinguish pipeline recovery from a stopped channel
MediaLive’s channel state tells you which failure you are dealing with:
- RECOVERING: One or both pipelines failed, and MediaLive is restarting them. Do not treat this state as a reason to start the whole channel.
- IDLE: The channel is not running. MediaLive does not automatically start a stopped channel; an explicit start is required.
- STARTING or STOPPING: The channel is in transition. Avoid issuing a competing start or stop action.
- RUNNING: The channel is active. If a pipeline-specific restart is needed, AWS documents
RestartChannelPipelinesfor a channel that is currently running; it is not the operation for starting an idle channel.
AWS describes the distinction directly: “You must always start a channel manually. The channel never starts automatically except when it is already running and attempts to recover from a failure.” See Starting the channel in the MediaLive User Guide.
Build an event-driven start workflow
Use an EventBridge rule to detect relevant MediaLive channel state changes, then invoke a handler that verifies the live state before starting the channel. Lambda is one suitable target; AWS does not prescribe a single recovery policy for every workload.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Create an EventBridge rule. Match the event source
aws.medialiveand detail typeMediaLive Channel State Change. Narrow the rule to the intended channel ARN and an actionable state such asIDLE, rather than reacting to every channel event. The event format and state fields are described in Monitoring MediaLive with CloudWatch Events. - Route the matching event to a handler. For example, configure Lambda as the EventBridge target. The event includes fields such as
detail.state,detail.channel_arn, anddetail.pipelines_running_count. Use the channel ARN to identify the channel rather than relying on a hard-coded assumption about which channel generated the event. - Read the channel’s current state. Treat the event as a trigger to investigate, not as definitive proof that the channel is still idle. Query MediaLive for the current channel state before taking action. If the channel is RECOVERING, RUNNING, STARTING, or STOPPING, record the observation and do not issue a start.
- Apply your recovery policy, then start only if permitted. If the channel is still IDLE, its inputs and schedule are ready, and your policy allows unattended recovery, call the MediaLive
StartChannelAPI operation (or the equivalent SDK operation). Otherwise alert an operator or leave the channel stopped for investigation. - Record the decision and result. Log the triggering event, state observed, policy decision, and API result. Make the handler safe to retry so duplicate events do not create competing actions.
- Plan for missed events. MediaLive service-event delivery to EventBridge is best-effort. If missing a state change is unacceptable, alert on a persistent IDLE state or periodically reconcile channel state in addition to reacting to events.
The event source, event format, and best-effort delivery are documented AWS behaviors. State checks, retry handling, logging, alarms, and periodic reconciliation are operational design recommendations based on those behaviors—not a universal AWS-mandated restart policy.
Check inputs and schedules before enabling automatic starts
A channel can start successfully without producing the content you expect if its source or schedule is not ready. AWS notes that push inputs must already be sending before the channel starts. For channels with multiple scheduled inputs, MediaLive selects the input according to the schedule’s state. A scheduled file input may replay from the beginning of its file or clip after a restart rather than resume at the point implied by elapsed wall-clock time. Review the input and schedule behavior in Starting the channel.

- Confirm that push sources are sending before an automatic start can occur.
- Check which input the schedule will select at restart time.
- Decide whether replaying a scheduled file or clip from its beginning is acceptable for the programme.
- Define whether the handler should start automatically, alert an operator, or use a bounded retry policy. The right choice depends on content, cost, and outage tolerance.
Choose the recovery mechanism for the failure location
| Where the failure occurred | Relevant mechanism | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream source or path into MediaLive | Automatic input failover, with supported inputs configured as a failover pair | Switches processing to the standby input when configured failure conditions occur; it does not restart the whole channel. See Automatic input failover. |
| MediaLive encoder pipeline | Standard-channel pipeline redundancy and MediaLive’s pipeline recovery behavior | Addresses a pipeline failure within a running channel. Consider how downstream systems handle redundant pipelines. See Pipeline redundancy. |
| Whole channel stopped and IDLE | External event-driven start workflow | Checks whether a start is safe and explicitly starts the channel; this is the case that requires a separate workflow. |
Built-in input failover or pipeline redundancy may address an upstream or pipeline fault more directly than restarting the entire channel. A full-channel restart is a separate recovery path for a stopped channel, not a substitute for configuring the appropriate resilience mechanism.
Common automation failures and fixes
- The handler tries to start a channel in RECOVERING. Filter for IDLE and query the live state again in the handler. RECOVERING means MediaLive is already attempting pipeline recovery.
- Repeated events trigger overlapping actions. Make the handler idempotent: check current state before acting, and ensure retries or duplicate notifications do not cause conflicting operations.
- No event reaches the handler. EventBridge delivery for MediaLive service events is best-effort. Use an alarm for a channel that remains IDLE or a periodic state reconciliation if missed notifications matter.
- The channel starts but has no usable source. Verify source readiness; push inputs must already be sending before channel start.
- The restarted channel plays the wrong point in a file. Review the schedule and account for a scheduled file input potentially replaying from the beginning after restart.
- A pipeline restart API is used on an idle channel.
RestartChannelPipelinesapplies to a channel that is currently running. Use the start operation for an idle channel. - A restart restores service but the viewer still sees a gap. Do not assume that a full channel stop and start preserves continuity. The documented behavior establishes restart mechanisms, not a universal recovery time or uninterrupted-stream guarantee.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo serves a different use case: keeping an uploaded-video YouTube channel live 24/7. It does not start or recover AWS Elemental MediaLive channels, and it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
