Stage revised lessons under new filenames, add or replace them at a natural playback boundary, then verify the OBS preview and audio before relying on the change. Avoid overwriting the file OBS is currently reading: the documented OBS controls do not guarantee an interruption-free reload for every setup.
Update the playlist without ending the broadcast
YouTube receives the live feed from your encoder. For an ordinary lesson update, keep that feed going: do not stop the encoder or end the live event. YouTube’s encoder guide describes starting a stream by sending content from an encoder and ending it by stopping that content (YouTube: Go live with an encoder).
- Preserve the current state. Save a copy of the existing playlist and keep the currently playing lesson file unchanged.
- Stage each revision as a new file. Use a distinct filename in a stable media folder. Open and play the file through to confirm it works before adding it to the live playlist.
- Make the playlist change at a boundary. In OBS, update the media or VLC playlist when the current lesson finishes, using the controls available for that source. OBS documents media-source and playlist features, but does not establish one universally safe live-reload command for every configuration (OBS: Media Sources).
- Verify the transition. Watch the OBS preview and audio meters as the next lesson starts. Confirm the intended picture and sound before removing the old file or treating the revision as live.
- Keep the local dependencies available. For a locally operated continuous playlist, the computer, lesson files, and internet connection must remain available. The encoder and playback source must also continue sending the feed.
- Test the exact setup before relying on it unattended. Check the change at a playlist boundary, after reloading the source, and after restarting OBS. Test privately or in another controlled stream so that a failure does not disrupt the public broadcast.
Why staging a new file is safer than overwriting one
If OBS is actively reading a lesson file, overwriting that same file may leave the source playing old data, produce a playback problem, or require a reload. The reviewed OBS documentation does not promise that replacing a file in place will reload cleanly without a glitch. The conservative approach is to preserve the current file, stage the revision under a new name, and test how the installed OBS and VLC versions handle the playlist transition.
There is no documented click sequence that can be guaranteed safe across all OBS setups. Source type, playlist configuration, and the behavior of the installed software matter. Confirm the transition in your own encoder preview before using it in an unattended stream.

What YouTube’s broadcast documentation does—and does not—establish
YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide shows that separate broadcast resources can be managed while a 24/7 broadcast remains live: its example activates and later completes an interview broadcast without stopping the feed that supplies the ongoing 24/7 broadcast (YouTube Live Streaming API: Broadcasts). This illustrates that managing a separate broadcast resource need not end the continuous feed. It is not a method for hot-swapping a local lesson file in OBS.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance addresses a different layer. For HLS ingestion, it specifies a playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, TS segments between one and four seconds, and HTTPS POST/PUT; it also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP (YouTube: HLS ingestion). These are ingestion requirements, not instructions for editing an OBS lesson playlist.

Choose a workflow that fits your operating needs
| Consideration | Local OBS playlist | Cloud-hosted looping |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Manage the media source and playlist in your own encoder. | Use the hosted service’s controls; verify whether it supports the live playlist edits you need. |
| Availability | The local computer, files, and internet connection must remain available. | Can shift the need to keep a home computer running, but check the provider’s limits and operation. |
| Update behavior | Test whether a playlist edit or source reload interrupts output in your setup. | Confirm that the provider allows edits during playback and establish whether edits interrupt the stream. |
| Recovery | Test recovery after encoder, computer, and network interruptions. | Check how the provider handles service or YouTube interruptions. |
| Cost and privacy | Account for the equipment and connection you keep available; protect locally stored lesson files. | Review current fees, upload and storage terms, and access controls directly with the provider. |
A portable external SSD can help keep lesson files together and make local staging convenient, but no particular capacity or speed is established as necessary. A drive does not make replacing a file currently being played safe.

If you do not want a computer at home to stay on, StreamNeo is a YouTube cloud service for looping uploaded recordings, not a camera feed. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can then be off while the cloud keeps the stream running. StreamNeo’s documented offer includes any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and a first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Confirm that its playlist-editing controls fit your lesson-update workflow before switching.
