First identify which playlist OBS is playing: local files use OBS’s VLC Video source, while a YouTube playlist in a Browser Source depends on YouTube’s embedded player. Those are different playback systems, so the fix depends on the source type and any error shown.
Identify the source that stops
- Local files queued in OBS: use the VLC Video source for a multi-file playlist. A Media Source handles one local file; its Loop option repeats that file, not a playlist. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- A YouTube playlist in a Browser Source: check that the source points to a playlist embed, not just the first video’s URL. YouTube documents embedding videos and playlists, but its autoplay setting alone does not guarantee that a playlist will advance inside OBS. See YouTube Help: Embed videos & playlists.
- An error appears in the Browser Source: note the exact error before changing the source. Error 153 has a distinct community-discussed branch below; it is not a general explanation for every stopped playlist.
Fix a playlist of local video files
- Install VLC. The VLC Video source may not appear until VLC is installed. OBS documentation notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the right source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene. This source supports a playlist of media files. A Media Source is for a single local file.
- Set up the playlist. Open the VLC Video source properties, add the video files in the intended order, and apply the changes.
- Enable Loop Playlist. This is the setting for restarting the playlist after it reaches the end. The separate Loop setting on a Media Source repeats that one file.
- Test the transition. Let the first file finish and confirm that the next file starts. Then let the last file finish to check that the playlist restarts.
Fix a YouTube playlist in a Browser Source
Confirm that the source contains the playlist
Inspect the Browser Source URL or embed code and confirm it represents the YouTube playlist, rather than only the first video. If OBS is given a single-video embed, it has no playlist sequence to advance through. YouTube’s embed guidance covers both video and playlist embeds.
Check autoplay without treating it as a complete fix
YouTube’s documented autoplay parameter is autoplay=1 in the embedded video code. This controls automatic playback start. It does not, by itself, establish why a playlist fails to advance after its first video in OBS, so verify the playlist URL and inspect the player state as well.
If the player shows Error 153
Use this branch only when Error 153 is actually visible. In an OBS forum discussion on October 30, 2025, an OBS forum administrator said YouTube embeds cannot be used as a top-level document. A forum participant described an HTML iframe wrapper as a workaround. This is community guidance, not a complete official compatibility specification or a universal fix; check current OBS and YouTube behavior before relying on it. See the OBS forum discussion about YouTube embed Error 153.

When the playlist still will not advance
An OBS community resource describes a Lua script that generates a Browser Source URL from a first video and following YouTube video IDs, with autoplay and loop options. It is a third-party community option, not an official OBS fix. Review its requirements and source before using it: OBS community YouTube playlist resource.
If there is no visible error and playback simply stops at the end of the first video, verify the embed URL first. The available official YouTube instructions document embedding and autoplay, but do not settle every cause of playlist-advance failures inside OBS.

Troubleshooting: what to check next
| Symptom | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A local playlist ends after one file | Whether the source is Media Source or VLC Video | Use VLC Video for multiple local files and enable Loop Playlist; use Media Source’s Loop only when repeating a single file. |
| A YouTube embed starts the first video but not the next | Whether the URL or embed represents the playlist or only its first video | Verify the playlist embed, then check autoplay configuration. Autoplay alone is not proof that playlist advancement is configured. |
| The Browser Source displays Error 153 | The exact error and how the embed is loaded | Consult current compatibility guidance; treat the iframe-wrapper suggestion as community advice, not a guaranteed repair. |
| The cause remains unclear | OBS version, operating system, source type, URL format, whether video one reaches its end, and any visible error | Record those details, removing private tokens from URLs, before asking for help. |
