To rotate media on a schedule, use an OBS VLC Video source for playback, then use an OBS script or an external controller through OBS WebSocket to select or replace the day’s playlist. Schedule that automation with your computer’s operating-system scheduler. YouTube’s broadcast schedule is a separate setup: it controls the live event, not which files OBS plays.
Understand the three different schedules
- OBS playlist rotation: Chooses which local media files play in the live layout. OBS documents playlist playback and loop or shuffle options, but not a built-in daily calendar. OBS Media Sources.
- YouTube live event: Sets up an upcoming broadcast and, depending on configuration, whether it starts automatically or requires a separate transition. It does not choose OBS media. See Google’s broadcast and stream implementation guide and life of a broadcast.
- Scheduled video publication: Makes an uploaded private video public at a chosen date, time, and timezone. It is not a way to change media inside an OBS live stream. See YouTube’s scheduled publishing instructions.
For a daily OBS playlist change, you need the first schedule. YouTube’s event schedule can be configured separately if you want a broadcast to start at a particular time.
Build the OBS playlist source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene used for the broadcast and add the media files you want it to play. OBS says this source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the Media Sources guide.
- Give the source a stable name, such as Daily Playlist, and keep media paths consistent. Stable names and paths make it easier for automation to identify the source and for you to replace files without changing the scene layout.
- Choose whether the list should play in its listed order or shuffle, and whether it should loop. VLC Video exposes loop and shuffle options. Confirm the result by previewing the scene before relying on it live.
- Keep the scene and playlist separate in your planning: the scene controls the visual layout, while the VLC source supplies the media. OBS profiles save most output settings; scene collections store scenes. Neither is a daily playlist calendar. See OBS Profiles.
Choose how the daily change will be triggered
OBS supports scripts and WebSocket control, but the official documentation does not describe a ready-made daily playlist scheduler. The approaches below are implementation patterns based on those documented extension points, not a tested recipe or an OBS built-in timer.
Option 1: An OBS script
OBS scripts can interact with scenes and sources. Use a Lua or Python script that maps each day to a playlist and updates the VLC source at the intended time. The OBS Developer Guide confirms that OBS can be extended with scripts, plugins, and WebSocket; it does not provide a specific daily rotation script.

Option 2: An external controller over WebSocket
An external application or script can communicate with OBS through its WebSocket endpoint. It can determine the intended playlist and update the relevant source. The controller must know which OBS instance and source to address, and you must verify that its WebSocket implementation is compatible with your installed OBS version. The same Developer Guide describes WebSocket as an extension and control interface.
Schedule the automation on the computer
Whichever approach you choose, use the operating system’s scheduler to run the script or controller at the change time. Choose one explicit local-time policy and configure the computer’s timezone accordingly. If the system observes daylight saving time, decide whether the change should follow local wall-clock time or a fixed interval, then test that behavior. India uses local time for the channel’s schedule, but the cited OBS guidance does not specify India-specific scheduler settings.

Before depending on unattended changes, test a full cycle and then test what happens if OBS or the computer restarts, a scheduled run is missed, a media file is unavailable, or OBS is upgraded. This is practical operational guidance; the official documentation cited here does not establish recovery behavior for a particular custom script or controller.
Schedule the YouTube broadcast separately
You can create or select the live event in YouTube Live Control Room, or use the YouTube Live Streaming API. In the API model, a liveBroadcast represents the event and a liveStream represents the incoming encoder feed. The broadcast can have a scheduled start time and be bound to a stream. Depending on the configuration, it may be set to auto-start or explicitly transitioned to live once the bound stream is active. Do not assume that scheduling a broadcast changes the OBS playlist or guarantees a public start under every setup. Test the event, stream binding, and start behavior with a private or unlisted workflow before relying on unattended public broadcasts. Test the daily rotation before relying on it
- Confirm the VLC source plays every intended file, in the expected order or shuffle mode, and loops only if desired.
- Run the automation manually once for each playlist mapping, then let the operating-system scheduler trigger it.
- Check the configured local time and timezone, including the behavior you expect after a restart or a missed run.
- Confirm that the YouTube event is bound to the correct incoming stream and that its start behavior matches your plan.
- After an OBS update, verify the script or controller and any plugins before using them for a live schedule. OBS notes that plugin compatibility can depend on version, platform, and architecture; see its Plugins Guide.
Troubleshoot common failures
The VLC Video source is unavailable
OBS requires VLC to be installed for the source to appear. Check the VLC installation and match its architecture to OBS: the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source remains missing.

The playlist plays, but does not change on schedule
OBS’s documented VLC playlist controls do not provide a daily calendar. Check that the operating-system scheduler ran the intended script or controller, that it selected the correct day’s mapping, and that it addressed the right OBS instance and source. Inspect the automation’s logs or output; the official OBS guides do not prescribe a universal logging or recovery method for custom automation.
The change happens at the wrong time
Check the computer’s timezone, the scheduler’s interpretation of local time, and any daylight-saving behavior. Do not rely on YouTube’s scheduled-video timezone selection to set the time of an OBS playlist change; they are separate features.

The new playlist is empty or some files do not play
Check the playlist entries and confirm the media files still exist at the paths the source or automation expects. Test each day’s list in the OBS preview before the scheduled change.
OBS changes, but the YouTube event does not go live
Playlist rotation and broadcast state are separate. Verify the event and stream binding, then check whether the event is configured for auto-start or requires a transition. The YouTube API’s broadcast lifecycle guide explains the states and transitions.
