Yes—you can play videos with different resolutions in one YouTube Live broadcast. Add the files to an OBS VLC Video source playlist, then send that playlist as one live encoder feed. Set the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in OBS; YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers. The individual files do not need separate quality versions.
What happens when the playlist videos have different resolutions?
OBS plays each file in sequence, while its output settings define the single feed sent to YouTube. YouTube then creates multiple playback formats from that feed, so viewers can select a quality suited to their device and connection. The source clips can have different dimensions, but the encoder output—not a separate YouTube quality setting for each file—governs the incoming live stream.
There are two different meanings of “playlist” here. A creator’s playlist is a set of video files played by OBS. In YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation, a “Media Playlist” is a list of media segments that make up a live transport stream. YouTube’s HLS ingestion supports Media Playlists and ignores Master Playlists because YouTube transcodes the incoming stream itself. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
Set up a mixed-resolution playlist in OBS
- Prepare and order the files. Check that each video plays correctly and that its audio is present. Arrange the files in the order you want them broadcast.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the playlist files to it. Choose whether playback should loop or shuffle. OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source to be available; see OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- Choose one output profile. In OBS, set the stream’s output resolution, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, and bitrate. Choose a profile your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain consistently. You do not configure a different live output profile for every item in the VLC playlist.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private. YouTube’s walkthrough is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that video and audio are present and correctly framed before starting the public broadcast.
- Test transitions and monitor stream health. Test representative files, including transitions between clips with different dimensions or frame rates. During the broadcast, watch the preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring audio and video quality in its live streaming tips.
Choose OBS settings that fit your upload and source material
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio and frame rates up to 60 fps. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval. Its bitrate table gives recommendations by resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the row matching your chosen output rather than treating one bitrate as universal. For example, the table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. That is YouTube’s published recommendation, not a measured minimum or guarantee. Check the current table in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the output based on the detail you want to deliver, the frame rate you need, encoder compatibility, and—above all—the upload capacity and stability available to the streaming computer. A profile that exceeds reliable upload capacity can cause buffering or stream-health problems even if the source videos play smoothly on the computer. If clips differ substantially in aspect ratio, inspect the OBS preview: the encoder’s scene and source layout determine how each clip fits into the output frame.
Test before broadcasting a full playlist
Documentation describes OBS playlist controls and YouTube ingestion, but does not guarantee seamless transitions for every combination of codecs, frame rates, dimensions, or audio layouts. Run an unlisted or private test first. Include a sample of the files most likely to expose issues, and check the beginning and end of each transition.

- Confirm each file appears in the preview at the expected size and orientation.
- Check that audio starts, stops, and changes levels cleanly between files.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health while the encoder is running.
- Confirm that the playlist loops or shuffles as intended before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Check rights and YouTube rules for every playlist item
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every video and audio track. A playlist may combine material with different rights holders, so checking only the main video is not enough. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and check the status shown in Live Control Room. The encoder workflow does not establish whether a particular playlist is authorized; that depends on the content and your rights. YouTube’s guidance on live streaming is available in its live streaming tips.
Troubleshooting mixed-resolution playlists
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source is missing in OBS | VLC is not installed, which OBS requires for this source. | Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list. |
| The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor health | The selected output profile may exceed the connection’s reliable upload capacity. | Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and select a profile the connection can sustain. |
| A file transition looks wrong or has no sound | The source files may differ in dimensions, frame rate, codec, or audio layout; seamless transitions are not guaranteed for every combination. | Test the affected files in an unlisted or private broadcast, inspect the OBS and YouTube previews, and check audio at the transition. |
| The broadcast does not start in YouTube | The encoder may not be using the selected stream’s server URL or stream key. | In Live Control Room, verify the selected stream and copy its current URL and key into OBS. Check the preview before going live. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If this is a 24/7 prerecorded-video channel rather than a one-off playlist broadcast, StreamNeo runs the YouTube stream from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
