Yes. A Raspberry Pi can read a video from a USB SSD and send it to YouTube Live in a loop; the Pi does not need to boot from that SSD. Mount the drive, confirm the file is readable, put FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i, and send the output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key for your YouTube Live event. Whether a particular Pi can sustain your chosen resolution and encoding settings depends on its model, FFmpeg build, power supply, and upload connection.

What you need before starting

  • A Raspberry Pi running an operating system, plus a USB SSD, enclosure, or adapter compatible with the Pi and your drive.
  • A video file stored on the SSD that the operating system can read, and enough free storage for any other media you plan to use.
  • FFmpeg installed with an encoder and RTMPS support suitable for your setup. Capabilities vary by build; check your installed version and available encoders rather than assuming a particular command will work.
  • A YouTube channel and a stream configured in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, where you can copy its server URL and stream key.
  • A reliable power supply and sustained upload bandwidth appropriate for your selected output resolution and bitrate.

Raspberry Pi documentation covers USB storage and notes that boot-media options depend on the model. USB boot is optional here: the operating system can boot from a microSD card while the video lives on the SSD. If you want the Pi itself to boot from USB, check the current boot instructions for your exact model. Raspberry Pi USB mass-storage boot documentation

Connect and mount the SSD

Confirm that the operating system sees the drive

Connect the SSD and check that your operating system recognizes it and mounts its filesystem. Locate the video and note the mounted path—for example, /mnt/ssd/loop-video.mp4 below. That path is illustrative, not a universal mount location. Device names such as /dev/sda1 can change between boots or connections, so do not build a long-running setup around an assumed device name.

Check file access and power

Make sure the account that runs FFmpeg can read the mounted file. If the drive disconnects, resets, or reports power-related errors, investigate the Pi’s USB power arrangement before treating the problem as an FFmpeg fault. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that USB disks and SSDs have power requirements; it says attaching more than one disk typically requires external power from a powered enclosure or powered USB hub. This does not mean every single SSD requires one. Raspberry Pi USB storage documentation

Get the YouTube Live server URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  3. Copy the server URL and the stream key shown for that stream.
  4. Use those values in FFmpeg’s output address, replacing the placeholders in the example below.

YouTube describes the stream key as functioning like a password and address for your stream. Keep it secret: do not publish it in a screenshot, a public command, or a shared script. If it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on it again. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Run FFmpeg with an infinitely looping input

This schematic shell command shows the key option placement and a conventional H.264/AAC RTMPS output. It is a starting point, not a tested Raspberry Pi configuration. Replace the file path, ingest URL, and stream key with your own values; adjust the encoding options to suit the source, Pi, and YouTube’s current guidance.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/mnt/ssd/loop-video.mp4"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 3000k -maxrate 3000k -bufsize 6000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Why the loop option goes before the input

-stream_loop is an input option. Place -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i; -1 requests infinite looping. If you move it after the input, it will not apply to that input as intended. FFmpeg’s documentation describes -re as useful for real-time output, but the appropriate command depends on the input and output details. FFmpeg documentation: advanced options

What to adapt in the example

  • Encoder: The example uses libx264, but it may not be available or practical on your Pi. Check your local FFmpeg build and the Pi’s encoding capabilities; do not assume hardware acceleration is configured.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Choose values the device can sustain and that make sense for the source. A 30 fps recommendation does not mean every Pi can encode 30 fps at the matching resolution.
  • Bitrate: The example’s 3000k video bitrate is illustrative. Set a bitrate appropriate to your output and ensure your sustained upload bandwidth can carry it, with headroom for network variation.
  • Keyframe interval: -g 60 represents 60 frames between keyframes. Its time interval depends on frame rate; for 30 fps, that is two seconds. Set it to match your output frame rate and YouTube’s recommendation.
  • Input and audio: Check that the file’s video and audio decode correctly and that the resulting stream has the audio you expect. The sample requests AAC audio at 128 kbps; adjust as needed for the source and your stream.
  • RTMPS support: Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the protocol and output format used by the command. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Set output quality to match YouTube and your Pi

YouTube’s H.264 guidance for RTMP/RTMPS recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its recommendations below are current guidance on the Google / YouTube Help page accessed in 2026; they are ingest recommendations, not evidence that a given Raspberry Pi can encode those settings reliably.

Output format YouTube recommended video bitrate Keyframe guidance
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
H.264, 720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance when choosing settings; the platform may update its recommendations. Select a resolution and bitrate that your Pi can sustain while leaving adequate capacity on your internet connection. The exact combination must be validated on your hardware and installed FFmpeg build.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. Start the FFmpeg command with the actual file and YouTube event details.
  2. Watch FFmpeg’s output for input, encoding, connection, or protocol errors. Check CPU load and confirm the Pi is not overheating or losing power.
  3. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the stream preview, stream health, and any messages YouTube displays.
  4. Verify that both video and audio are present and that movement and sound remain stable. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement to the intended stream.
  5. Let the stream run long enough to observe whether the Pi, SSD connection, network, and YouTube ingest remain stable. A short successful start does not establish long-term reliability.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely checks What to do
FFmpeg cannot open the input Mounted path is wrong, SSD is not mounted, or the FFmpeg user lacks read permission. Confirm the drive is mounted, locate the file again, and verify that the account running FFmpeg can read it.
Drive disappears or resets USB connection, enclosure compatibility, or power supply may be insufficient for the setup. Check cables and power. For multiple disks or persistent power trouble, consider a powered enclosure or powered USB hub; it is not automatically needed for every single SSD.
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or protocol The installed build may lack libx264, RTMPS, or another requested capability. Inspect the local FFmpeg build and available encoders/protocols, then use an available compatible configuration or install a suitable build for your OS.
YouTube does not receive the stream Ingest URL or key may be incorrect, the selected event may differ, or the connection may fail. Copy the URL and key from the selected Live Control Room event again, ensure the key remains private, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Video stutters or the Pi cannot keep up Encoding load, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or network capacity may exceed what the setup sustains. Test a lower resolution or frame rate and suitable bitrate, then monitor CPU load and YouTube stream health. Do not rely on a setting solely because it appears in a sample command.
Video works but audio is missing or wrong The source may lack the expected audio, or the chosen audio encoding may not match the input and build. Inspect the source streams and FFmpeg output, then adjust audio options and test again in the Live Control Room.
The video does not loop as expected -stream_loop -1 may be positioned after the relevant input, or the input may not be read as expected. Place the option before that input’s -i and test the source file locally.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Looping a file technically does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio that you own or are licensed to stream, and check that any licence covers live rebroadcast and the intended territory. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-streaming policies before going live; a stream may be interrupted or a channel affected if content or account activity violates platform rules. YouTube encoder guidance

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video running on YouTube without leaving the Pi, SSD, or home connection responsible for the stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera.
