YouTube says custom stream keys can be reused. If a 24/7 FFmpeg stream reports that a key expired, first verify the selected stream key and server URL in YouTube Studio, then compare both with FFmpeg’s output settings. A reset or replaced key must be updated in FFmpeg; if they match, use the exact FFmpeg error and YouTube stream-health messages to find whether the failure is authentication, connection, or process-related.
What “stream key expired” does—and does not—tell you
YouTube describes a stream key as the credential and destination information an encoder uses to send a feed. Its setup guidance recommends a custom key when you want to reuse the same key, and does not specify a routine expiration period. So an “expired” message is a symptom to investigate, not proof that YouTube imposes a timer on a correctly configured custom key.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance addresses an error starting a third-party encoder by directing users to retrieve the key from Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder. If the key was reset or replaced, the old value will no longer be the right one for that configuration. The server URL is a separate setting: verify both values for the intended stream. Check the key and destination in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Select the stream you intend FFmpeg to feed and inspect its stream key and stream URL. Make sure you have not selected a different stream or copied credentials from another setup.
- Check whether the key was changed. If you or another channel manager reset or replaced it, copy the current key and update FFmpeg’s configuration. YouTube recommends entering the current Live Control Room key in the encoder when troubleshooting an encoder start error.
- Compare both settings, not just the key. Confirm FFmpeg is publishing to the matching stream URL with the matching key. A correct key paired with the wrong destination can still prevent the intended stream from starting.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public screenshots, shared command lines, or logs that others can access. If it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the new value.
Use the error and stream health to identify the failure mode
At the time the stream stops or fails to start, check FFmpeg’s stderr output and the incoming preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. The cause cannot be determined from the phrase “key expired” alone; the exact error and whether FFmpeg remains running matter.

These are diagnostic directions, not a confirmed diagnosis of a particular machine. Preserve the exact error text and timestamps when investigating, but redact the key before sharing logs or screenshots.
Do not confuse FFmpeg reconnection with key renewal
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes reconnect options in particular protocol and input contexts. A reconnect option may help with a connection interruption where it applies; it does not renew an invalid YouTube publishing credential or fix a mismatched stream URL. Check what the option applies to in your command and FFmpeg version rather than assuming that adding a reconnect flag resolves a rejected key. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Test the encoder before relying on a continuous stream
- Start a test stream and confirm the selected Live Control Room stream receives the feed and shows a preview.
- Monitor stream health and the encoder’s output while the test is running. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring its stream-health messages.
- Use RTMPS for encoder ingestion where your encoder and configuration support it; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- If an error returns, compare its exact wording with the moment FFmpeg’s stderr changes or the process exits. This helps distinguish a rejected destination or credential from transport trouble or a local process failure.
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings include H.264 bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations for those resolution and frame-rate combinations, not a fix for key authentication. Choose settings appropriate to the source and connection, and use YouTube’s full settings guidance for other combinations and codecs.
What a 24/7 stream means for archiving
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast is longer than that stated automatic-archive window, so do not treat the archive guidance as a guarantee that an entire continuous broadcast will be saved. This is a separate consideration from stream-key validity; it does not establish that a key expires after 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
