If YouTube Live Control Room says “no data” while FFmpeg reports that it is sending RTMP, first verify that FFmpeg is publishing to the correct server URL and stream key for the selected YouTube stream. Then check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s preview and stream-health status. A sending message from FFmpeg does not, by itself, prove YouTube has ingested a usable feed, and this symptom alone does not identify one cause.
1. Confirm the YouTube destination and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to use.
- Open that stream’s Stream settings and copy its server URL and stream key into your FFmpeg configuration. Make sure both values belong to this stream, rather than another scheduled or ongoing stream.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not post it in logs, screenshots, support requests, or public forums. If it may be stale or exposed, retrieve or reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. A mismatch is one possibility to check, not a diagnosis based on “no data” alone. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
2. Inspect FFmpeg’s command and logs
Read the complete command and the output from the same attempt that appears in Live Control Room. Look for connection or authentication errors, output errors, and stream-mapping messages. Confirm that FFmpeg is publishing the intended video and audio streams, if your stream requires both.
- Check that the output destination uses the URL copied for the selected YouTube stream.
- Check whether FFmpeg reports an error or disconnect rather than assuming that a process still running means the feed is reaching YouTube.
- Review the input and output stream mappings so the intended video and audio tracks are included.
- When asking for help, redact the stream key. The URL host and relevant error lines may help; the secret key should not be shared.
YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the stream in the encoder, updating the encoder, and reviewing encoder errors. It does not provide a specific FFmpeg command or flag as a universal fix. YouTube: Fix live stream problems.

3. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health
In Live Control Room, look for a preview and the stream-health or status message. These are the ingest-side checks: FFmpeg’s local send report and YouTube’s receipt of a usable stream are different observations.
- If the preview appears, compare the preview and stream-health message with FFmpeg’s output.
- If this is a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live.
- If there is no preview, the configured feed has not become usable for that stream session. That observation does not distinguish a URL or key mismatch from protocol, encoder, account, network, or temporary service causes.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the stream setup flow, and its live-stream troubleshooting guide covers stream status and common checks.

4. Verify RTMP or RTMPS details
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Use the actual RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room, and verify that the protocol and server in FFmpeg match it. A generic message that FFmpeg is sending RTMP does not establish that the intended RTMPS destination was reached successfully.
- Compare the full destination’s protocol and server with the value shown for the selected stream.
- Confirm that your FFmpeg build and command support the protocol you are using.
- If FFmpeg reports an SSL error, YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance suggests specifying port 443. Apply this only where relevant to the error and destination; do not replace the server URL with a guessed address.
See YouTube: Troubleshoot live streaming issues with RTMPS and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.

5. Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance
Check the actual output settings against YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance. Matching recommended settings is a useful diagnostic step, not a guarantee that ingest will resume; do not assume one mismatch caused “no data” without checking the FFmpeg output and YouTube status.
| Setting | YouTube guidance to compare |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Bitrate mode | CBR |
| Video bitrate | Choose from YouTube’s current table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate in use; there is no single bitrate that applies to every stream |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 in the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings |
| Resolution | Compare the actual output with YouTube’s current recommendations and the corresponding bitrate guidance |

6. Check the outbound connection
If the stream looks and sounds healthy directly in the encoder but YouTube still does not show a usable feed, check the outbound internet connection. YouTube identifies connection strength as a possible issue in this situation. Compare the encoder’s local output with YouTube’s preview and status, then test the network path. A healthy local view does not rule out a problem between the encoder and YouTube.
7. Escalate with useful, safe evidence
If the checks do not resolve the issue, preserve the details needed to distinguish configuration, encoder, and network problems. YouTube recommends reporting persistent problems; the available status alone cannot establish an account-specific diagnosis or service incident.
