Choose OBS if you want a visible, graphical way to combine a radio feed with a static image, logo, or other scene. Choose FFmpeg if you can configure and supervise a command-line relay and want a repeatable scripted workflow. Neither encoder removes the need to meet YouTube’s current ingest settings, test the real audio and visual, or secure permission to rebroadcast the station. This is a workflow comparison, not a performance test.
OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your radio stream?
| Consideration | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and control | Graphical application with scenes and visible stream controls; OBS documents YouTube setup, including stream keys and starting or stopping a broadcast. OBS’s YouTube setup guide | Command-line workflow suited to operators who can configure and maintain a media pipeline. Detailed FFmpeg command syntax was not verified for this comparison. |
| Adding a visual | Scenes make it straightforward to pair audio with a static image, logo, title card, or other visual. | Can be used to create an encoded media pipeline, but exact input and command details depend on the setup. |
| Automation | Useful when an operator wants to see and control the broadcast in an interface. | A reasonable choice for a scripted relay. A script alone does not establish reliable restart or recovery; process supervision, logs, and monitoring still need to be configured. |
| YouTube delivery | OBS offers YouTube service configurations for RTMPS and HLS. OBS service configurations | Can deliver a compatible encoded stream through YouTube’s supported ingest methods; the encoder settings must meet YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube live encoder settings |
| Maintenance | Settings are visible in the application, which can help an operator inspect a running setup. | Requires someone to maintain input URLs, the process, logs, stream-key handling, and any restart supervision. |
For a first broadcast, or when the stream needs a visual that may change, OBS is generally the simpler fit. For an operator comfortable with command-line media tools who values scripted repeatability, FFmpeg may fit better. The available evidence does not establish that one is inherently more stable, uses fewer resources, or reconnects more reliably.
What you need before going live
- A permitted radio audio source: either an internet stream URL or a physical line-level source. Hardware is only relevant if your source is analog or you need hardware monitoring.
- A video stream suitable for the chosen YouTube ingest method. For an audio-only programme, that usually means pairing the audio with a static image or generated visual.
- A YouTube live event and the current ingest settings from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat stream keys and endpoint details as private and account-specific.
- A stable upload connection. YouTube recommends choosing settings the connection can reliably support and testing upload speed before the event.
- Permission to retransmit the station’s programming on YouTube, including the intended territory and whether the resulting archive may remain available.
Set up a YouTube radio stream with OBS or FFmpeg
- Identify the audio input. Decide whether you are relaying an internet radio URL or capturing analog audio. Do not add an audio interface to the plan unless the source or monitoring setup actually calls for one.
- Choose the encoder workflow. In OBS, create a scene and add the audio source and a visual. For FFmpeg, build a command-line pipeline appropriate to the source and visual, then arrange process supervision and logging if it must run unattended. The precise FFmpeg command depends on source format and implementation; do not assume a command copied from another setup will work unchanged.
- Create or select the live event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the event and use its current stream settings. Configure RTMPS for a routine stream unless a specific need calls for HLS. Never publish or share the stream key.
- Apply YouTube’s ingest guidance. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). For audio, it lists AAC or MP3. Its advanced stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; these are platform recommendations, not universal rules for audio quality. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings.
- Run a preflight. Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test event where available. Play the actual station audio and intended visual, confirm the incoming feed reports healthy audio and video, and check stream-health messages before the broadcast.
- Monitor the event. Keep an eye on YouTube’s stream health and notices while live. Test settings against the real connection and programme rather than assuming that a successful connection alone means the broadcast is healthy.
RTMPS is the normal starting point; HLS is a specific alternative
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Use the current ingest information displayed for your event rather than copying an endpoint or key from an article, since these details may change or be specific to your account.
HLS is not simply a different URL to paste into the same configuration. YouTube describes it for workflows that need HLS ingestion, including some HDR or codec cases. It has higher latency than RTMP, and its setup involves HLS segment and playlist handling. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. Ultra-low latency is disabled for HLS. OBS lists HLS as a supported YouTube service configuration. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance

OBS’s format documentation can help explain container choices: it describes H.264 as OBS’s default video codec, FLV as an RTMP container with limited codec and audio-track support, MPEG-TS as a streaming format used with HLS, and MKV as supporting OBS audio/video encoder combinations. These are format notes, not a substitute for the ingest requirements shown for your YouTube event. OBS supported formats
Check rebroadcast rights before transmitting
A station being publicly available online does not mean you may retransmit its programming on YouTube. Confirm that the relevant broadcaster or rightsholders authorize this particular use, territory, and any YouTube archive. The answer depends on the station’s license and applicable jurisdiction; it cannot be inferred from the public stream URL.

YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it detects a match, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the broadcaster to stop. If the content remains, the stream can be temporarily interrupted or terminated; copyright or Community Guidelines strikes can also end it. YouTube notes that even licensed third-party content may trigger an interruption if the channel is not on the content owner’s Content ID allowlist. Resolve permission and any allowlisting requirement before launch. YouTube copyright issues with live streams
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the broadcast | Confirm that the live event’s current ingest settings and stream key are configured in the encoder, and that the key has not been exposed or replaced. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for the event’s current connection status. |
| Audio arrives but the video is missing or unhealthy | Ensure the encoder is sending a compatible video stream along with the radio audio. For audio-only programming, add a static image or other visual and verify the incoming video during preflight. |
| Audio quality or continuity is poor | Test the actual radio source and connection, inspect YouTube stream-health messages, and compare the encoder’s audio settings with YouTube’s current ingest guidance. The stereo figures above are recommendations, not a guarantee of quality for every source. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after starting | Check YouTube’s notices for stream-health or policy messages. A third-party content match can cause a placeholder, interruption, or termination; check that rebroadcast permission and any Content ID allowlisting are in place. |
| An unattended FFmpeg relay stops | Review the process logs, source availability, network path, and whatever supervisor or restart policy the deployment uses. Reliability depends on the actual configuration; a command by itself does not guarantee recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
