To run a 24/7 ocean sounds stream with changing visuals, prepare rights-cleared video and audio, arrange the visuals as looping sources or scenes in OBS Studio, and send the broadcast to YouTube Live using a streaming key. Keep the encoder, power, and internet connection available, and monitor YouTube Studio for ingest and copyright alerts. If you do not want a home computer to run continuously, cloud playout is an alternative.
1. Prepare ocean footage and sound you can legally stream
Use recordings you made yourself or material whose license explicitly permits live transmission and any replay or archive you plan to keep. Check rights for each element: footage, sound recordings, music, graphics, and other third-party material. A stock-site label alone does not establish that a particular use is permitted.
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can lead to a placeholder image; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. 2. Plan the scene rotation
Decide what viewers should see and in what order—for example, a daylight shore, dusk waves, then a night surf view. These are planning examples, not required scene types. Make a separate OBS scene for each visual if you want to control transitions individually. Alternatively, use a playlist-style arrangement if that better fits your intended rotation. Keep the audio plan separate from the visuals: decide whether one continuous ocean recording should play under every scene or whether the sound changes with each clip.

3. Create the YouTube Live broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, prepare a live broadcast and choose the streaming-software workflow to obtain the connection details OBS needs.
- Copy the stream key and server or ingest details from Studio into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Confirm that YouTube Studio is receiving a preview before you make the broadcast public. Studio labels and paths can change, so follow the current interface shown in your account.
4. Build the scenes and add looping media in OBS
- In OBS, create and name a scene for each visual you planned. Clear names such as “Daylight,” “Dusk,” and “Night” make the rotation easier to manage.
- Add each video clip as a media source in the scene where it belongs. Enable looping for sources that should repeat. Add your ocean audio as an audio source, or use the clips’ own audio if that is intentional.
- Set scene changes or playlist order to match the viewing sequence you want. OBS controls and media-source behavior can vary by version; consult the OBS help portal for current controls.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast using the stream details from Studio, then check the YouTube preview and OBS audio mixer before launch.
There is no universal bitrate or resolution for every ocean stream. Start with OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard, then choose output demands that your computer and sustained upload connection can support. A setting that works briefly may still be unsuitable for a stream that must run continuously. OBS notes that rising dropped-frame counts can indicate an unstable connection to the destination or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; see its official help portal.
5. Test a full cycle before going live
Do not stop after checking that the first clip plays. Let the test run through at least one complete rotation—and longer if needed to cover every file boundary—and watch for:

- Black frames, gaps, or abrupt jumps between scenes and at loop boundaries.
- Audio gaps, unexpected changes in loudness, muted sources, or sound continuing when you intended it to stop.
- Clips that fail to play or behave differently from one scene to another.
- A YouTube preview that freezes, never appears, or loses the incoming feed.
Correct source loop settings, file or codec compatibility, transitions, and audio routing before relying on the rotation. Test the actual planned order; a scene that works by itself may still behave differently when the next source starts.
6. Keep a local OBS stream running
With local OBS, the computer, source media, power, and internet upload must all remain available. Before leaving the stream unattended:

- Prevent the computer from sleeping and check its restart or update behavior.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection where practical, especially if Wi-Fi is unstable.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame information and YouTube Studio’s ingest status. Reduce resolution or bitrate demands if the connection cannot sustain the configured output.
- Decide who will notice and respond if OBS stops, the computer reboots, power fails, or YouTube stops receiving the feed.
- Consider a UPS if power interruptions are a significant risk. It can help with local power loss, but it does not fix internet outages, software crashes, or rights problems.
OBS itself is open-source software, and using it does not add a cloud-service charge. A local setup still depends on your existing computer, power, and connectivity.

8. Monitor the broadcast and check its archive
While live, watch YouTube Studio for ingest problems and third-party-content alerts. If the stream is interrupted, check the live dashboard and resolve the rights issue; where licensed content is involved, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting. After the broadcast ends or is archived, review YouTube Studio for Content ID claims.

Troubleshooting common failures
