A “broken pipe” means FFmpeg tried to write to a pipe or output endpoint that had stopped accepting data. It does not, by itself, explain why that happened. On a YouTube radio workflow, FFmpeg might be reading a stream from YouTube, publishing a stream to YouTube Live, or passing data between programs—so the command and the lines around the error determine what to check first.
What “broken pipe” tells you—and what it does not
FFmpeg’s error source maps the system error EPIPE to the text “Broken pipe” (FFmpeg error definitions). The message indicates a failed write, not a complete diagnosis. The other end may be a shell-pipeline consumer, a remote HTTP or RTMP connection, or a server that ended the session. The wording alone cannot identify which side closed the connection or why.
“YouTube radio stream” is ambiguous: you may be pulling a stream from YouTube, pushing audio or video to YouTube Live, or piping data between programs as part of either workflow. YouTube’s encoder recommendations concern streams being published to YouTube Live; they do not automatically apply when FFmpeg is only reading a YouTube source.
Find the failing process and endpoint
- Capture the whole run. Keep the complete command, timestamped output, and exit status. If a shell pipeline or downloader is involved, capture stderr and the exit status of each process where possible. A separate program’s “BrokenPipeError” is not the same as FFmpeg reporting a write failure.
- Read the lines just before the error. Note whether FFmpeg names standard output, a local file, an HTTP source, an RTMP URL, or another destination. Record whether it fails immediately, after streaming successfully for a while, or at end of input. These details narrow down the failing part of the pipeline.
- Establish the direction. Determine whether the YouTube URL is the input FFmpeg reads or the destination to which it publishes. Identify any intermediate program or shell pipe between source and destination.
The exact cause cannot be determined without the full command, complete log, FFmpeg version and build, operating system, and stream direction.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Isolate input, processing, and output
Test each part independently rather than changing several options at once:
- Test the input. If FFmpeg is reading a YouTube stream, check whether it can open and read that source on its own.
- Test local processing and output. Use the input to create a short local output file. If this also fails, investigate the input or FFmpeg’s processing before troubleshooting a remote destination.
- Test the destination separately. Use a known-good local file as input and send it to the remote endpoint. If that fails, focus on the output connection, server, or ingest configuration.
- Test shell-pipeline stages. If one program feeds another, check each program’s logs and exit status. The consumer may have closed its input, or an upstream program may have stopped; FFmpeg’s message alone does not distinguish these cases.
A 2019 FFmpeg-user mailing-list exchange illustrates isolating a local-file path from a remote RTMP destination in a related pipe workflow (FFmpeg-user thread). It is a diagnostic pattern, not a guaranteed fix or proof that the same cause applies to every YouTube radio setup.

Choose recovery options for the failing side
HTTP input reconnects
If the failure is on an HTTP input and the source disconnects, FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options include reconnect behavior for a disconnect before EOF, treating EOF as an error for live or endless streams, selected network errors, and selected HTTP errors. Retry limits are also configurable. Consult the HTTP protocol documentation and the options available in your installed FFmpeg build. Use these settings only when the input protocol and observed failure match. They do not fix a separate RTMP output write failure.
Output recovery with the FIFO muxer
For a network output that fails temporarily, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes decoupling encoding from muxing and options for attempting recovery, retry timing, and queue behavior. It may help with temporary output interruptions, but it does not establish that the destination problem is solved.

The FIFO queue’s overflow behavior matters: enabling drop_pkts_on_overflow can let processing continue by dropping packets when the queue fills. That sacrifices part of the stream. Whether recovery, buffering, or packet loss is acceptable depends on the command and the need for complete delivery; there is no universal recovery option for every broken pipe.
If FFmpeg is publishing to YouTube Live
First confirm that YouTube is the output destination. YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Compare your actual output settings with that guidance and check the Live Control Room diagnostics. These are compatibility checks, not a diagnosis for every broken pipe.

Common symptom patterns
- Failure at end of input: Check whether the source ended and whether the output consumer or remote server closed its side. For HTTP live or endless inputs, consider whether the documented EOF reconnect behavior matches the source and failure.
- Failure after a period of successful streaming: Inspect the named output or input and the surrounding logs for a connection interruption. If it is a temporary network output failure, evaluate output recovery options; if it is an HTTP input disconnect, evaluate HTTP input reconnect options.
- Local output succeeds but remote output fails: The input and basic processing work in that test. Focus next on the remote endpoint and, if publishing to YouTube Live, ingest compatibility and Live Control Room diagnostics.
- A local file sent to the destination also fails: The source stream is less likely to be the distinguishing factor. Investigate the output connection, destination behavior, or ingest configuration.
- Only a shell-pipeline run fails: Preserve both processes’ stderr and statuses, then identify which process stopped first. Do not assume FFmpeg’s named output is the endpoint that closed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded recording or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than diagnose a particular FFmpeg command, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not require a computer or home connection to stay on, streams what you upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and supports YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
What to include if the error persists
For a more specific diagnosis, share the complete command with any stream key or private URL removed, the full log around the failure, FFmpeg version and build, operating system, and whether FFmpeg is reading from YouTube or publishing to YouTube Live. Include any shell pipeline or intermediate program and say whether the error occurs immediately, during streaming, or at the end.
