To relay a Shoutcast station to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, point FFmpeg at the station’s actual network stream URL and publish the compatible audio stream to the ingest URL and stream key for a YouTube Live event. There is no universal command: station URL formats, authentication, source codecs, FFmpeg builds and YouTube event settings vary. Check those details first, then confirm the feed in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A running Shoutcast-compatible station stream and the correct listener URL, including any path or authentication details supplied by the station operator.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can reach the station and YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- A YouTube Live event configured in Live Control Room, with its ingest URL and stream key available. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it.
This is a relay, not a way to turn a local audio file into a radio station: FFmpeg receives the network stream and sends it onward. FFmpeg supports SHOUTcast/ICY metadata requests, but that protocol capability does not mean every station supplies useful metadata or uses the same URL pattern. FFmpeg protocol documentation
Set up the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the event you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the values for the specific event; do not substitute a key from a different broadcast.
- If using encrypted ingest, follow YouTube’s instructions for the RTMPS URL. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS. Keep the key private, including when saving commands or logs. YouTube: Set up your encoder
Check the Shoutcast input and its audio format
Confirm the station URL
Ask the station operator for the listener stream URL and any required credentials. Do not assume a website’s homepage or player URL is the direct audio endpoint. URL syntax, mount or path details, and authentication are station-specific.
Inspect what FFmpeg receives
Test the URL with your local FFmpeg installation or an FFmpeg probe tool before building the relay. Identify the audio stream and codec, and determine whether the station exposes metadata. FFmpeg’s protocol support cannot establish what a particular station actually serves.

Choose stream copy or transcoding
Use stream copy only when the destination accepts the source as-is
Stream copy passes compressed packets through without decoding or encoding, avoiding an additional encode. It is appropriate only when the input audio codec and the selected YouTube ingest configuration are compatible. It cannot apply filters or convert the source. FFmpeg describes the simplest stream-copy pipeline as copying one input elementary stream’s packets “without decoding, filtering, or encoding them.” FFmpeg: Stream copy
Transcode when conversion is needed
If the source cannot be passed through compatibly, configure FFmpeg to encode audio in a format accepted by the selected YouTube event. Verify the current YouTube requirements and inspect the actual source before choosing codec, bitrate, sample rate or channel count. There is no single encoding recipe established for every Shoutcast-to-YouTube setup.

Transcoding permits format conversion and filtering, but it uses processing resources and creates a new encoded stream. Do not add guessed audio parameters to a command simply because they are common elsewhere.
Build and test the FFmpeg relay
Use a placeholder template only after identifying the correct input, output protocol and codec path. Replace every placeholder with the station-specific and event-specific values; never share a real key.

ffmpeg [input/reconnection options] -i "SHOUTCAST_STREAM_URL" -f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"This is a template, not a ready-to-run universal command. The input URL, authentication, chosen audio handling, output muxing and ingest endpoint must match the station and YouTube event. An audio-only source may require a compatible video-bearing source or a platform-supported event arrangement; YouTube’s behavior depends on the current event configuration, so confirm it in Live Control Room rather than assuming an audio-only feed will be accepted.
- Start FFmpeg with the selected input and output settings and watch its output for connection or stream errors.
- Open the event preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that audio arrives and that any expected station metadata behaves as intended.
- Start the broadcast using the event’s configured workflow only after the preview is correct. Do not assume that a connected FFmpeg process alone means the public broadcast has started.
Handle disconnects and reconnects
FFmpeg documents reconnection options for network errors and streamed inputs, including treating end-of-file as an error for sources expected to remain live. These options can help when the station connection drops, but they cannot guarantee uninterrupted service or recover every failure. A reconnect setting only addresses some input-side failures; it does not fix an invalid key, an unavailable YouTube event, incompatible media, or a host computer losing power or network access.

Troubleshoot common failures
