For multiple property videos, first make sure the playlist workflow handles compatible media and transitions; the loop option alone does not turn arbitrary files into a validated, seamless playlist.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, with access to Live Control Room.
- A Linux VPS with the video files available locally or on a reliable mounted volume.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Check the installed version and confirm its options against the FFmpeg documentation.
- A stable outbound connection and enough disk space and transfer allowance for the selected media and stream.
- Rights to stream every video, image, music track, graphic, and voiceover in the playlist.
No fixed VPS CPU, RAM, storage, or bandwidth plan is established for this workflow. The load depends on the files, whether FFmpeg re-encodes them, the output resolution and frame rate, playlist size, and network conditions.
Prepare the playlist and decide how to encode it
Choose one file or a playlist
A single file is the simplest case: FFmpeg can repeat that input indefinitely. A multi-video playlist needs a method to move between files and account for their durations. The source videos should have compatible stream properties for the workflow you choose; do not assume that a loop flag validates codecs or creates seamless transitions between unrelated property videos.
Inspect the actual files before broadcasting. Confirm the video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio layout, and container against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the media you intend to use. Check that every clip has picture and usable audio where expected, and preview transitions and orientation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Copy streams or re-encode
Stream copying avoids the CPU cost of encoding, but the existing media must be compatible with the ingest and output you need. Re-encoding gives control over output settings and can improve compatibility, but uses more VPS CPU. Test the complete workflow with your actual files before relying on it for a long broadcast; there is no universally safe encoding or concat command for arbitrary property-video assets.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule a broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup. Treat the key as a credential: do not commit it to a public repository, expose it in shared shell history, or print it in logs.
- Keep the URL and key in a private configuration available to the FFmpeg process. The command below uses shell variables as placeholders; set them privately for your environment rather than pasting a real key into a public script.
YouTube treats the broadcast and the stream as distinct resources: the broadcast is the viewer-facing event or video, while the stream carries the audio-video feed. Scheduled events have a broadcast lifecycle, including a Go live step in Studio when the preview is ready.

Loop a single video from the VPS
For a compatible single-file input, the basic FFmpeg pattern is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv
"$YOUTUBE_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
-re reads the input at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible; the FFmpeg documentation describes it as equivalent to -readrate 1. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. This is a starting pattern, not a tested command or a guarantee that every source file is compatible. Confirm the accepted URL format for your YouTube encoder setup, and adapt the encoding options to your media and YouTube’s current guidance.

Test the preview and start the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg on the VPS and check that the process remains active and reports no input, encoding, or connection errors.
- Open the stream preview in Live Control Room. Verify picture, audio, orientation, and the point where the video loops or transitions.
- For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube Studio’s flow and select Go live when the preview is ready. Creating a scheduled event does not itself mean that the broadcast is live.
- Monitor YouTube ingest status and the VPS process after going live. Also watch disk space, outbound connectivity, and any host transfer limits.
Keep a long-running stream operational
For an unattended VPS, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd and configure monitoring for the process, available disk space, network connectivity, and YouTube ingest status. A supervisor can restart a process according to your configuration, but that alone does not establish that the stream recovered correctly at YouTube. Test restart and reconnection behavior; no uptime or automatic recovery guarantee follows from this DIY setup.
Plan broadcast boundaries rather than assuming an indefinite stream produces one complete archive. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That guidance does not promise a complete archive for a stream lasting longer than 12 hours. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation also describes recurring or scheduled broadcasts that reuse a stream, and an example of a continuing broadcast while another broadcast is temporarily started on the same stream. Automating those event changes requires deliberate broadcast management and, for API-based control, development and authorization work.

Choose RTMP or HLS deliberately
For the ordinary encoder workflow, use the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for selected workflows. Its HLS setup guidance specifies playlist, segment, and HTTPS requirements and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. HLS is not the default recommendation for a basic VPS file loop.

Clear rights for the property footage and every included music track, image, graphic, and voiceover before streaming. Keep permission records. Copyright permission and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate: permission to use footage does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization.

YouTube’s channel monetization policies say content should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. The policy also describes reused content as material republished without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value. A playlist that merely repeats property footage may therefore raise monetization concerns even when the footage is licensed. Add genuine viewer value—for example, useful property context or original narration—and assess the channel against YouTube’s current policy.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Incorrect stream URL or key, failed connection, or FFmpeg error | Recheck the encoder details in Studio, inspect FFmpeg’s error output without exposing the key, and confirm the VPS can reach the ingest service. |
| Video or audio is missing, distorted, or incompatible | Source codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio layout, or container does not fit the chosen workflow | Inspect the actual files and compare their properties with YouTube’s current encoder guidance; test an appropriate re-encode if stream copying is unsuitable. |
| Playlist breaks or transitions are poor | Files have incompatible stream properties, or the playlist method does not handle transitions and durations | Test the playlist end to end with the real assets. Do not expect -stream_loop -1 alone to join multiple arbitrary files. |
| FFmpeg stops or the stream disconnects | Process exit, resource pressure, disk exhaustion, or network interruption | Check supervisor and FFmpeg logs, CPU and disk usage, host transfer limits, and outbound network stability. Verify recovery at YouTube rather than assuming a process restart restored the broadcast. |
| The broadcast is not archived as expected | The stream duration exceeds YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window or the broadcast lifecycle was not managed as intended | Use YouTube’s under-12-hour archive guidance when planning boundaries; do not rely on one indefinite event as a complete archive. |
