YouTube schedules and hosts the live event; an encoder or playout service sends the video program. To add breaks between prerecorded videos, build the breaks into that outgoing program or use a service that explicitly supports timed breaks. YouTube’s published setup guidance covers scheduled events and encoder delivery, but does not document native timed breaks between playlist items.
How the playlist and scheduled event fit together
Think of this as two separate jobs: YouTube Live provides the event page, while an encoder or hosted playout service supplies the continuous program. A playlist in this workflow means a sequence of media files played into the live output; it does not mean YouTube automatically inserts pauses between videos.
YouTube’s encoder workflow describes scheduling a stream in YouTube Studio, then connecting an encoder with YouTube selected or by entering the stream URL and stream key. The stream key is a credential for sending video to the event, so keep it private. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection process.
Prepare the channel and schedule the event
Check live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s current live-streaming help says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility before building the program or announcing a start time. See Get started with live streaming.

Create the scheduled event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room.
- Select Manage, then schedule a stream and enter the event details.
- Review the scheduled-event settings, including visibility and any available viewer reminder options. YouTube says scheduled streams can be promoted, may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming, and let viewers opt into a reminder. See Manage live stream settings.
- Copy the event’s stream key and connect it to your encoder or playout service. Treat the key like a password; do not put it in public notes, overlays, or chat.
Build the program and insert breaks
Choose what viewers see during each break
Prepare one continuous output in the order you want viewers to see it: video, break content, next video, and so on. A break can be a slate, an intermission video, silence, or another pause segment. Set its duration in the encoder or playout workflow that actually controls playback.
The official YouTube encoder instructions explain how to connect and start an encoder, but do not teach playlist authoring or timed-break insertion. Do not assume that scheduling a playlist, setting it to repeat, or creating a YouTube event also creates breaks. Confirm the selected tool can insert breaks at the required points and for the required duration.

Verify the full sequence before airtime
- Check playlist order, repeat behavior, and what happens at the end of the final item.
- Confirm break duration and whether each break includes the intended image and audio.
- Watch the stream preview to confirm the correct event and stream key are connected.
- Test unattended operation, including how the program resumes after a source or connection interruption.
Send the program with a local encoder
A local encoder is suitable when you want to control the media and breaks yourself and can keep the computer and connection running for the broadcast. OBS is one possible encoder; the exact playlist and break controls depend on the software and version you use.
- Open the scheduled event in YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve its stream key.
- In your encoder, select YouTube as the service or enter the stream URL and key, following the encoder’s current instructions.
- Load or construct the complete playback sequence, including each break segment. Verify that the encoder can play the files continuously and in the intended order.
- Review the encoder’s scheduled-stream start and stop behavior alongside the event settings. OBS’s official guide notes that auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether encoder start and stop actions also start or end a scheduled YouTube event; confirm the current behavior in both products. OBS Project’s YouTube streaming guide provides setup notes.
- Start the encoder and check the preview before the scheduled start. Follow the event’s on-screen status to confirm the live program reaches the intended event.
YouTube’s cited encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a platform behavior described in the help page, not a guarantee about every event or a substitute for checking the current guidance before relying on an archive. Longer events should not be assumed to receive the same automatic archive treatment. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

When a hosted playout service makes sense
A hosted service can avoid leaving a local computer running, but verify the precise playlist and break behavior before building your workflow around it. The available service descriptions establish scheduling or repeating prerecorded content, not timed breaks between playlist items.

Troubleshooting the scheduled broadcast
The event is scheduled, but no video appears
Check that the encoder is connected to the correct event and that the stream key matches. Confirm the encoder is sending output and inspect the Live Control Room preview for an error or connection status.

The event does not start or end when expected
Review the scheduled event’s start time and the encoder’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. OBS guidance notes these settings affect whether encoder actions also control the scheduled YouTube event; behavior can be version-sensitive, so confirm it in the current interfaces.
A break is missing or occurs at the wrong time
Check the actual media sequence and timing in the encoder or playout service. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not establish that Live Control Room inserts timed breaks between playlist items.
The stream stops when the computer is turned off
With a local encoder, the computer is generating the outgoing program, so it must remain available throughout the broadcast. A hosted playout service can remove that local-computer dependency, but verify its break, recovery, and scheduling behavior before relying on it.
Copyright and content considerations
Being prerecorded does not by itself establish that a video is cleared for a live broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements before scheduling. A playlist or break slate does not change the rights status of the material being broadcast.
