There is no universal FFmpeg sync-fix command: first find out whether the offset is already inside a source clip, appears at a playlist join, or grows over time. Then choose the repair. A fixed timestamp offset may call for an input timestamp shift; mismatched streams or unreliable segment durations usually call for correcting the inputs or rebuilding with the concat filter and re-encoding.
Find where the sync error starts
Check the source clips and the assembled playlist at the beginning, near each join, and near the end. This separates three different problems that can look alike during playback.
- One clip is out of sync throughout: The mismatch is in that source. Correct its audio/video timing before rebuilding the playlist.
- Sync changes suddenly at a join: Inspect that segment’s streams and the duration used to place the next file. A concat demuxer relies on segment durations, and inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts.
- The offset grows gradually: Do not apply a single fixed shift and assume the problem is solved. Check durations, frame rates, and timestamp behavior across the affected streams.
Without the files, their metadata, and the command used, there is no reliable way to prescribe one exact repair. This diagnosis follows FFmpeg’s documented concat and timestamp behavior; it is not a test of your particular playlist.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
The key decision is whether the files are compatible enough for stream copying or need to be normalized and re-encoded. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation says files must have the same streams, codecs, and time base. Its concat FAQ distinguishes the demuxer, for suitable stream-copy cases, from the concat filter, for concatenation that requires re-encoding.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| What you find | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| All files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases; stream copying is suitable; durations are reliable. | Concat demuxer | It places each file after the previous one without re-encoding, but duration inaccuracies can produce artifacts. |
| Inputs differ in stream layout or need normalization, or stream copying is not suitable. | Concat filter | It supports a re-encoding workflow so the inputs can be brought into a consistent output format. |
| A missing or different audio stream occurs in some entries. | Normalize the inputs for a filter workflow | A demuxer list expecting matching streams may not suit these files. Handle missing audio consistently, for example by supplying silence where appropriate. |
These are method-selection rules, not a guarantee that either method will fix an unknown source of sync error. A 2021 FFmpeg-user mailing-list example discusses adding silence or using a filter workflow for different or missing audio streams; treat that as an example, not a universal recipe: FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion.
If stream copying is appropriate, check the concat list and durations
The concat demuxer reads a list of files and adjusts their timestamps so each follows the previous one. For that approach, check that each entry has the same streams, codecs, and time bases, and that the duration FFmpeg uses for every file is accurate. Duration estimates can be wrong, including when affected by bitrate or a truncated file.

If you know the correct duration for an entry, the concat list’s duration directive can override the stored duration. Do not guess: an incorrect override can move the next segment to the wrong point. If the files’ stream layouts differ or they otherwise need re-encoding, use the concat filter workflow instead of trying to force them through an unsuitable demuxer setup.
Use a timestamp shift only for a fixed offset
FFmpeg’s -itsoffset option adds an offset to an input’s timestamps. It can help when inspection shows that an input has a constant start-time offset relative to the other media. The correct direction and amount depend on the measured offset, so there is no safe universal value to copy.

The -isync option aligns input start-time offsets using the difference between their start times; FFmpeg expects the inputs to come from the same clock source for the expected result. Neither option corrects an offset that grows over time, unequal track duration, or incorrect relative timing already present within a clip. See the FFmpeg advanced options documentation before applying either option.
Validate the assembled file before uploading
- Check duration: Confirm that the finished audio and video track durations agree. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting says, “Make sure the durations of your audio and video tracks are the same.” See Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube.
- Check the whole timeline: Listen and watch near the start, around every join, and near the end. A file can be aligned at the start and still drift later.
- Keep the recorded frame rate: YouTube recommends maintaining the frame rate of the recorded content. Its general encoding guidance lists MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and a 48 kHz audio sample rate. These are delivery recommendations, not a guarantee that a concatenated file is synchronized. See YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.
- Recheck after any change: If you corrected a source, changed durations, shifted timestamps, or re-encoded with a filter, inspect the output again before upload.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- Only one source clip is wrong: Repair that clip’s internal timing first, then rebuild the playlist.
- Only the join is wrong: Verify the segment’s duration and stream layout. For the demuxer, use a known-correct
durationoverride only when needed; otherwise choose a filter workflow if inputs need normalization. - Some files have no audio: Do not assume a playlist with inconsistent stream layouts is suitable for demuxer stream copying. Normalize the inputs in a filter workflow, handling absent audio consistently.
- The offset keeps increasing: A global
-itsoffsetis not a drift correction. Revisit frame rate, track duration, and timestamps across the affected clips. - The result is still wrong after changing the concat method: Return to the source clips and test the beginning, joins, and end separately. A different concat method cannot by itself repair bad timing already inside a source.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the finished playlist is meant to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud rather than from a home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
