Add a Super Chat alert to OBS by embedding a third-party alert overlay as a Browser Source in the scene that carries your looping video. First confirm that YouTube has enabled Supers for your channel and stream; then configure an alert provider, add its overlay URL to OBS, and test the composition. OBS does not provide stream alerts itself.
Check YouTube eligibility before configuring OBS
An OBS overlay cannot enable Super Chat if YouTube does not make Supers available for the channel or the particular stream. In YouTube Studio, check the channel’s Supers access and confirm that the stream’s visibility, audience setting, and live chat are compatible.
YouTube lists age-restricted, unlisted, and private videos, videos marked made for kids, and YouTube Giving fundraisers among cases where Supers are unavailable. Supers are also unavailable when live chat or comments are turned off. Eligibility depends on location, applicable policies, and video settings, and YouTube’s rules may change; check YouTube’s current Supers help information for your channel and territory.

Standard OBS with a Browser Source
This route uses an alert provider’s overlay URL as a Browser Source in OBS. OBS Project’s official alert FAQ explains the general approach: “OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts.” The generic Browser Source approach does not carry the same minimum OBS version noted for StreamElements’ SE.Live add-on guide.

StreamElements SE.Live add-on
StreamElements documents a YouTube SuperChat AlertBox workflow through its SE.Live add-on. Its guide, dated May 8, 2025, specifies OBS v31.x or newer for that add-on workflow. That requirement is specific to the cited SE.Live setup; it should not be treated as a universal minimum for adding a third-party Browser Source in ordinary OBS.
Add the Super Chat overlay to OBS
- Confirm YouTube access: In YouTube Studio, verify that Supers are available for your channel. Check the looping stream’s visibility, audience designation, and live-chat status as well.
- Connect your account in StreamElements: Connect the YouTube account and create or select a YouTube overlay or theme.
- Restrict the AlertBox to Super Chat: Open the overlay’s AlertBox settings. Leave SuperChat enabled and disable other event types if you want the overlay to show only Super Chat alerts.
- Copy the overlay URL: Copy the URL for the configured overlay. Treat it as the address of the alert widget; OBS will load it in a browser-rendered source.
- Add it to the looping scene: In OBS, select the scene used for the looping video, add a Browser Source, and paste the overlay URL into its URL field. Set the source width and height to match your stream canvas. StreamElements uses 1920Ă—1080 as an example, not a required size; use your actual canvas dimensions if they differ.
- Arrange and test: Make sure the Browser Source is visible and sits above the video source in the scene’s source stack. Check that the overlay is positioned and sized as intended, then test before going live. If an alert does not appear, check the URL, whether alerts are paused or muted, and whether the source is visible.
Make the alert work with a looping broadcast
Use the same OBS scene that carries the looping video, so the alert overlay is part of that scene’s composition. The overlay setup does not configure the video loop itself, and the published setup guidance does not establish whether every looping configuration affects alert delivery. Test your complete scene before broadcasting rather than assuming the alert behavior from the loop alone.

Do not use YouTube’s “Overlay for breaks” instructions as a substitute. That is a separate break overlay, not the Super Chat notification widget described here.
Troubleshoot missing Super Chat alerts
- No Super Chat option or no eligible events: Check YouTube’s channel and stream eligibility, including location, video settings, live chat, and comments. OBS cannot override YouTube restrictions.
- The alert does not render in OBS: Confirm that the Browser Source contains the correct overlay URL and that the source is visible in the active scene.
- The source is present but no popup appears: Check that SuperChat is enabled in AlertBox settings and that alerts are not paused or muted. Test the configured overlay before going live.
- The overlay is clipped or misplaced: Match the Browser Source dimensions to the stream canvas and reposition it in the scene.
- The SE.Live setup does not match your OBS version: The StreamElements SE.Live guide specifies OBS v31.x or newer for its add-on workflow. If using that route, check the guide’s version requirement; the requirement does not establish a minimum for standard OBS Browser Sources.
