How to Rerun Call of Duty Match VODs on YouTube Without Black Frames

Trace black frames from OBS preview to local recording, YouTube processing, or viewer playback, then fix the workflow that is actually failing.

To rerun a Call of Duty match without black frames, first find where the black image enters the workflow: OBS preview, the local recording, YouTube’s processed video, or playback on one device. Make a short local test recording and inspect it before recording or uploading the full match. The fix depends on where the fault begins; no single setting addresses every cause.

First identify what “black frames” means

Missing black frames—moments when gameplay is replaced by a black image—are different from black bars caused by a mismatch between the video and the playback window. Check the same moment in the OBS preview, the local file, and the YouTube version. If you are rerunning an existing VOD, compare its playback on another device as well.

  • Black in OBS preview: investigate game capture and scene setup.
  • Preview looks right, but the local file is black: inspect the recording and capture settings before uploading.
  • Local file is clean, but YouTube is black: check the upload encoding and processing.
  • Only one device shows black video: troubleshoot playback on that device before concluding that the VOD itself is defective.
  • Black bars, not missing gameplay: check canvas, output, and source framing.

The game edition, platform, operating system, and OBS version can change the details. The steps below cover the documented OBS guidance for Call of Duty on Windows, plus YouTube’s general upload and live-stream recommendations; they do not establish identical behavior for every Call of Duty release or platform.

Fix a black screen in OBS Call of Duty capture

Run OBS as administrator and test a short recording

  1. On Windows, close OBS if it is open.
  2. Right-click the OBS shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Open your Call of Duty scene and start a brief test recording with gameplay in motion.
  4. Stop the recording and open the file in a local video player. Check the exact moment you saw black in OBS.

OBS’s Call of Duty-specific troubleshooting guidance recommends running OBS as administrator. That page is dated January 12, 2022, so treat it as general guidance rather than a guarantee for every later game edition or system. If the test remains black, check for conflicts with overlays and whether the game’s fullscreen behavior affects capture. Change one thing at a time and repeat the short test.

Note: For capture use only; requires capture software to function and is not intended for direct screen casting to a monitor or TV
  • 【Ultra Low Latency Screen Sharing】 HDMI capture card is made of good quality aluminum alloy with strong heat dissipation, allowing you to enjoy ultra low latency while live gaming or video recording or live streaming, avoiding blue screens and lag. • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Do not rely on a clean preview alone: the local file is the quickest check that the capture was actually recorded correctly.

Correct framing without confusing bars for missing frames

In OBS, the base (canvas) resolution defines the scene area, while the output (scaled) resolution defines the recording dimensions. If the game source does not fit the canvas, the recording can show black bars or empty areas even though gameplay is being captured.

  1. In OBS, select the game source in the preview.
  2. Right-click the source and choose Transform > Fit to Screen to fit it within the canvas.
  3. Open Settings > Video and check that the base canvas and output resolution match the layout you intend to record.
  4. Make another short recording and inspect its framing.

Changing the base canvas can require repositioning or resizing sources. Fit the source to the intended layout, then verify the local recording. If gameplay disappears at particular moments rather than leaving persistent bars, return to capture troubleshooting; a framing mismatch does not by itself explain intermittent black frames.

Prepare a clean YouTube upload

If the local file is clean but its YouTube version is not, check the export and upload rather than changing the game capture first. YouTube recommends encoding and uploading at the same frame rate used to record. Its standard examples include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 frames per second; use your actual recording rate, not an arbitrary conversion.

These are upload recommendations, not a guarantee against gaps already present in the recording. If a black frame appears in the local file, repair or recreate that source before expecting a re-upload to fix it.

Check live-origin VODs and their archives

If the match was streamed live and you are rerunning its archive, inspect both the stream and the local recording. YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and audio, monitoring stream health, and confirming that the local archive is intact and continues to grow while the stream runs.

  • Live encoder: YouTube’s live guidance recommends H.264 with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • Local archive: confirm that the recording is present, playable, and growing during the event. Do not assume that an archive is complete just because the live stream appeared to work.
  • DVR: DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live event. It does not repair black frames already recorded into the source.

Test with a short stream or private setup before relying on a full match archive. If both the archive and the source stream show black at the same moment, investigate capture or encoder input. If the archive is clean but a viewer sees black in the YouTube version, check processing or that viewer’s playback path.

When only YouTube playback looks black

If the local recording is clean, retry the YouTube video and test it on another device. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance recommends checking playback across devices; this helps distinguish a defective upload from a problem limited to one viewer’s playback setup. If the same section is black on multiple devices and in the processed upload, compare it with the original local file and return to the upload checks.
