How to Fix Audio Desync in a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Live Stream

Find out whether your stream's audio gap is fixed, grows over time, or only appears in YouTube playback—then use the right OBS checks and correction.

First find out whether the audio gap is fixed or grows over time, and whether it appears in the encoded stream or only in YouTube playback. A fixed offset may be corrected with a measured OBS source sync adjustment. Growing drift calls for checking the media file and audio sample-rate path; adding a fixed delay will not solve it. If the encoded output is synchronized but YouTube playback is delayed or unstable, investigate stream health and delivery before changing source timing.

Diagnose the error before changing settings

Choose a clear event where visible motion and sound should coincide—such as a door closing or a speaker’s mouth movement. Compare it near the beginning and substantially later in the program. If possible, compare again after the prerecorded video loops.

  • The gap stays about the same: this points toward a fixed timing offset. Measure which leads and by how much before adjusting a source.
  • The gap grows: investigate media timing, sample-rate consistency, or another ongoing processing issue. A constant offset can shift the whole program but cannot correct accumulating drift.
  • The local encoded output is synchronized, but YouTube playback appears delayed or unstable: check stream health and delivery conditions before changing source timing.

This pattern-based distinction is a diagnostic inference, not a universal root-cause rule. YouTube’s stream latency means the capture-to-viewer delay; it is distinct from the relative timing of audio and video within the program. YouTube explains live-stream latency and buffering.

Test the actual stream, not just the OBS preview

Make a short test using representative material with clear motion and sound. Check the actual YouTube playback or stream monitor, not only local monitoring or OBS preview: those do not necessarily show the encoded output’s timing.

YouTube advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Its encoder guidance also recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.

Check the prerecorded source and loop behavior

In OBS, confirm that the source points to the intended file and that it is playing at 100% speed. If the source or playlist offers an audio-track selection, verify that the intended track is selected. Check the file itself in a local player near its beginning and end, then observe what happens at the loop boundary.

OBS Media Source supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and provides loop and “Restart playback when source becomes active” controls. For playlists, OBS’s VLC Video source includes audio-track selection. The relevant controls depend on how the stream is arranged; see the OBS Media Sources documentation.

For drift that grows, check sample rates

Compare the audio device’s sample-rate setting with OBS’s audio sample rate, and keep the source-to-OBS device path consistent. A mismatch has been identified as a possible contributor to drift in OBS community troubleshooting, but it is a check—not a guaranteed diagnosis.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. Use the recommendation that matches your output configuration, and make the device and OBS settings coherent with it. These are audio configuration recommendations, not evidence that a sample-rate mismatch is necessarily the cause of a particular sync problem. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

For a fixed offset, adjust the responsible source

OBS supports an audio sync offset for a source. Apply an offset only after measuring the error and identifying which component leads. The correct direction and amount depend on that measurement; there is no universal value to enter. OBS documents the capability in its source API reference.

After the adjustment, check the encoded output again. If the gap grows during playback, return to investigating drift rather than trying to mask it with a fixed offset.

Separate sync problems from delivery and latency

YouTube’s player read-ahead buffer affects how long viewers wait for a stream; lower latency means less buffer, and viewers may be more likely to feel issues between encoder and player. Network congestion can also delay delivery. These conditions do not by themselves establish that the audio and video are out of sync in the encoded program.

Check YouTube stream-health messages and the encoder output before altering source timing. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Make changes safely on a continuous channel

Where possible, reproduce the issue in a controlled test, change one measured setting at a time, and monitor playback and stream health afterward. The right procedure for changing media or audio settings during a live 24/7 stream depends on the encoder and stream arrangement; there is no universal no-interruption method established for every setup.

Or let it run in the cloud
