Compress the wedding footage into playback-ready files first, then configure the live encoder as a separate step. For a local setup, use a short test export, preserve the source frame rate where practical, and size the live bitrate to your measured, sustained upload capacity—not your advertised download speed. YouTube’s encoding recommendations apply worldwide; they are not India-specific network targets.

What compression does—and what it does not do

There are two distinct encoding stages. First, you compress the wedding recordings into files for the playlist. If you send that playlist through a live encoder, the encoder then produces a separate live stream for YouTube. The file’s export bitrate is not automatically the right live bitrate: YouTube publishes separate recommendations for uploads and live ingestion.

There is no reliable universal compression ratio for wedding footage. Results depend on the source resolution, frame rate, movement, detail, and chosen export settings. Test representative footage and judge the visible quality and file size rather than assuming a particular percentage reduction.

Prepare the wedding footage before exporting

Inventory the source clips

Record each clip’s resolution, frame rate, orientation, audio, and duration, and add up the playlist runtime. Keep an untouched backup master before transcoding. This gives you a way to recover if an export loses detail, audio, or synchronization.

Choose a target that fits the source and audience

  • Do not upscale lower-resolution footage; it increases file size without restoring detail that is not in the source.
  • Preserve the recorded frame rate unless you have a deliberate reason to convert it. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends keeping the frame rate at which the content was recorded.
  • If the footage is interlaced, deinterlace it where appropriate before export.
  • Keep orientation consistent where possible. Review portrait clips in the context of the playlist so you can decide whether their framing is acceptable alongside landscape footage.

YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and a 48 kHz audio sample rate. For SDR uploads, the recommendations include 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates. Those figures are upload recommendations, not live-ingestion bitrates. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Export and inspect a representative sample

  1. Select a short sample that includes faces, fine fabric detail, movement, and any difficult lighting or gradients in the wedding footage.
  2. Export it using the target settings you intend to use for the full playlist.
  3. Check the result at the intended viewing size. Look for softened faces or fabric, blocking in motion, banding in gradients, audio distortion, and audio/video sync drift.
  4. Compare the sample’s file size with the original, then estimate the full playlist size from the actual exported sample and the total runtime. Treat that estimate as approximate because clips can compress differently.
  5. If quality is not acceptable, adjust the export settings and test again before processing the complete archive.

Set the live encoder separately

If your playlist is played through an encoder into YouTube Live, configure the encoder’s outgoing stream for live ingestion. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; CBR bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Confirm that the selected codec is supported by your playback and encoding setup.

Check upload capacity at the streaming location

Measure sustained upload capacity on the actual connection that will carry the live stream. A speed-test result is only useful if it reflects the location, time, and connection conditions under which the stream will run. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For example, a 5 Mbps live output needs more than 5 Mbps of stable upload capacity; the recommended headroom makes the practical target at least 6.25 Mbps, before accounting for other simultaneous uploads or network use.

Prefer a stable wired connection when available. If the stream must use Wi-Fi or a mobile connection, test that exact setup under realistic conditions; shared use, congestion, and interruptions can reduce capacity. YouTube’s advice is to leave bandwidth headroom, not to rely on a countrywide speed figure. No India-specific upload-speed target is established here. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

Connect and test the YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the stream.
  3. Set the output resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval to the chosen YouTube-supported live combination.
  4. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with representative wedding footage and audio. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live.
  5. Check stream health in Live Control Room and watch the test on a separate device. Listen for clipping or missing sound and look for dropped frames, sync problems, or visible compression damage.
  6. If recording a local archive while streaming, confirm that the recording file is growing and that there is enough storage for the planned run.
  7. Only after the test behaves as expected, schedule or start the public stream. Decide whether viewers need DVR playback; YouTube’s live settings documentation explains the available stream settings.

Plan for a 24/7 run

A continuous playlist requires more than a suitable export. A local encoder depends on the computer, playback software, power, network, and correct stream configuration all continuing to work. YouTube’s setup guidance does not promise unattended operation or automatic recovery after a local failure, so decide how you will notice and respond to a power, software, or connectivity interruption.

Before relying on a continuous stream, run a representative test long enough to expose problems that may not appear in a brief check. Confirm that the playlist advances as intended, audio remains in sync, and the stream recovers in the way your chosen setup allows. Do not assume a particular stream-duration limit or channel eligibility: verify the current requirements in YouTube’s own account and Live Control Room.

Rights and channel considerations

Only stream wedding footage and music you have the appropriate rights to use. This is especially important if the recordings include commercially released music or material supplied by another party. A technically valid encoder configuration does not establish permission to broadcast the content, and YouTube may apply its own policies. Check the rights for the specific footage and audio before scheduling a public stream.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: check sustained upload capacity from the streaming location, reduce competing network use, and lower the live bitrate or output resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings with headroom.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: verify the stream URL and key in the encoder and confirm that the stream is active in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
  • Playback looks worse than the exported file: distinguish file quality from live output quality. Check the encoder’s live resolution and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations and inspect a new test at the intended viewing size.
  • Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: inspect the exported sample first, then check the encoder’s audio input and the test stream. This isolates an export problem from a live-encoding problem.
  • The local recording stops growing: check available disk space and the recording destination, then test recording separately from streaming if needed.
  • The stream stops after a power, software, or network interruption: restore the local equipment and connection, then reconnect the encoder using the active YouTube stream details. Plan monitoring and recovery rather than treating a local setup as self-healing.

Or let it run in the cloud

Nothing needs to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode the upload. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
