For a continuously running PC over a 30-day month, each average watt adds 0.72 kWh. At an illustrative ₹4–₹10 per kWh, a system averaging 100 W would use 72 kWh and cost about ₹288–₹720. Those are arithmetic examples, not measured gaming-PC consumption or universal Indian electricity rates.
Estimate your monthly electricity cost
Use this formula for a 30-day month:
Monthly energy (kWh) = average wall draw (W) × 0.72
Monthly cost = monthly energy (kWh) × your marginal rate (₹/kWh)
The 0.72 factor represents 720 operating hours divided by 1,000 watts per kilowatt. For a year, use 8,760 hours rather than multiplying one 30-day month by 12.

Measure the PC’s real streaming workload
A gaming PC’s power-supply rating is not its continuous electricity draw. Consumption varies with the processor and graphics card, hardware versus software encoding, output resolution and frame rate, power limits, background activity, and attached devices. The figures above are scenarios because no particular PC or direct wall measurement is specified.

- Connect a plug-in kWh meter or energy monitor between the PC and a suitable outlet. Check that the meter and outlet are compatible with the PC’s electrical load.
- Run the exact workload you plan to keep online: the streaming software, chosen encoder and output settings, representative video or playlist, and any other programs you expect to leave running.
- Measure for a representative period, ideally a full day, and use the meter’s average watts or total kWh. A short idle reading may not reflect encoding, playback, or background tasks over time.
- Decide whether to include monitors, networking equipment, lights, capture devices, or speakers. Meter them too if you want the cost of the whole setup rather than the computer alone.
If the PC already runs for some of the day, compare the added streaming use with your existing routine. Count only the extra hours or draw attributable to keeping it on for the stream.
Use the right Indian electricity rate
There is no single household electricity price for all of India. Retail tariffs depend on the state and DISCOM, the consumer category, monthly consumption slabs, and applicable duties, adjustments, or subsidies. Use your latest bill and your local DISCOM’s schedule to estimate the marginal rate for the additional units. The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compendium is a route to state schedules; the bill and applicable current schedule determine your own case.

The Rural Electrification Corporation’s FY 2025-26 comparison gives representative effective domestic rates for a specified 3 kW, 100-units-per-month case. That is context, not a universal tariff or necessarily the price of the next unit your household consumes. If the PC’s extra use pushes you across a slab boundary, calculate the bill with and without that additional consumption, then subtract the totals. A single average rate can misstate the incremental cost.
Streaming settings affect the workload, not a fixed wattage
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists H.264 at 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60; its AV1/H.265 recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. The same output settings can still produce different wall draw on different computers, especially depending on whether encoding is handled in hardware or software. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion, monitoring stream health, and leaving upload headroom; its network tips recommend roughly 20% above the total stream bitrate. A successful test helps establish the workload and connection, but it does not replace a power measurement.

Electricity cost does not establish whether the channel is eligible to stream or whether the stream will remain stable. For encoder-based live streaming, YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Set up and test ahead of time, then monitor stream quality. YouTube’s live streaming tips provide its official guidance.
