To restart an FFmpeg YouTube Live stream automatically, handle the failure at the right layer: use protocol-specific reconnect options only when that protocol supports them, and run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd so it can be started again after it exits. These are different protections. A supervisor does not necessarily detect a process that is still running but stuck, and restarting FFmpeg does not guarantee that YouTube resumes the same broadcast or file position.
First identify what disconnected
Before changing flags or adding a restart policy, inspect FFmpeg’s output and logs. The failure may be in the media input, the connection publishing to YouTube, or the FFmpeg process itself.
- Input failure: FFmpeg cannot read the file, network source, or other input. Recovery depends on that input’s protocol and whether it can be reopened.
- Publish connection failure: FFmpeg may still be running while its connection to YouTube has dropped. A process restart policy may not act if the process has not exited.
- Process exit: FFmpeg has stopped or crashed. A process supervisor can restart it according to its configured policy.
Keep the log from before and after the interruption. It helps establish whether FFmpeg exited, reported an input error, or remained alive without successful ingest.
Why FFmpeg reconnect flags are not a universal YouTube fix
FFmpeg’s reconnect options belong to particular protocol implementations; they are not global retry switches for every input and output. The reconnect family documented by FFmpeg here is associated with HTTP. The project’s HTTP option definitions and protocol documentation describe options such as reconnecting before EOF, treating EOF as an error, reconnecting on network errors or selected HTTP status codes, allowing reconnection for streamed input, and setting retry delays. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and HTTP option definitions in FFmpeg’s source.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In the FFmpeg project’s documentation, reconnect is described as “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error that causes reconnection, which the documentation says can be useful for live or endless streams. Those descriptions do not establish that the same options reconnect an RTMP output to YouTube.
Check the documentation matching your installed FFmpeg build and the protocol used by the failing connection before adding options. The upstream FFmpeg Documentation is a reference for command-line and value details, but option support can vary with the deployed build. Do not add HTTP reconnect flags to a YouTube publishing command and assume they cover RTMP output failures.

Restart FFmpeg after it exits with systemd
On Linux, systemd can manage an FFmpeg command as a service and restart it when the process exits. This protects against process exits; it does not, by itself, prove that a running but stalled process will be detected or recovered. The public YouTube-AutoEncoder project is an example of running FFmpeg under systemd, not a universal configuration guarantee.
- Make the command reliable on its own. Confirm that the FFmpeg command works when started manually, uses the intended input and YouTube ingest destination, and exits with an error when it cannot continue. Use the Live server URL and stream key supplied in YouTube’s encoder setup workflow. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Create a service for the command. Put the command in a systemd service appropriate to your host. Set a restart policy and a delay that make sense for your stream and server; there is no single verified unit configuration that suits every input, host, or broadcast.
- Protect the stream key. Treat the key as a secret. Avoid placing it in publicly readable files, shell history, shared logs, or a repository. Use an access-controlled configuration or secret-handling method available on your host.
- Enable and start the service. Have systemd launch it at the time you need, and configure startup at boot if the stream should return after a server reboot. Confirm the service starts successfully before relying on automatic recovery.
- Inspect service logs after a restart. Check whether systemd restarted FFmpeg, whether FFmpeg opened the input and connected to YouTube, and whether it then exited again. Repeated restarts without diagnosing the underlying error can create a restart loop rather than restore the stream.
Use the systemd documentation for the host’s installed version when choosing service directives and restart behavior. A restart delay can reduce rapid repeated launches, but does not fix an invalid key, unavailable input, or other persistent fault.

Verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room
A successful process start is not proof that the intended YouTube broadcast is live. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a Live server URL and stream key; after FFmpeg restarts, check Live Control Room for incoming encoder data and the state of the intended broadcast.
This distinction also matters for automation: YouTube’s API models a liveStream and a liveBroadcast as separate resources. A restarted encoder process does not, by itself, establish that all broadcast lifecycle actions have happened. See YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

FFmpeg starts a new process after a restart. Do not assume it resumes the exact interrupted connection or media position, joins an outage seamlessly, or continues the same broadcast. Confirm what YouTube reports and, for a file or playlist, check what the restarted command will play.

| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and stays stopped | No supervisor is managing the process, or the service is not configured to restart it. | Check the systemd service status and logs, then review its restart policy and delay. Confirm that the service is enabled and starts the correct command. |
| systemd reports a restart, but YouTube shows no incoming stream | FFmpeg may be failing to open its input, reach the ingest server, or authenticate with the stream key. | Read the FFmpeg log for the actual error. Verify the Live server URL and key in the encoder configuration and check the intended broadcast in Live Control Room. |
| FFmpeg remains active, but the stream is stalled | A restart-on-exit policy may not detect a live but hung process. | Check whether FFmpeg is still producing useful log output and whether YouTube receives ingest. A separate health check or monitoring mechanism may be needed; the cited sources do not establish a universal one. |
| HTTP input does not reconnect | The options may be unsupported by the installed build, applied to the wrong protocol, or unsuitable for the input’s EOF behavior. | Consult the protocol documentation for the installed FFmpeg version and verify the option’s scope. HTTP reconnect flags do not establish recovery for an RTMP YouTube output. |
| YouTube is receiving data, but the broadcast is not in the expected state | Encoder ingest and broadcast lifecycle are distinct. | Check the broadcast in Live Control Room. If an API workflow manages the broadcast, account for both stream and broadcast resources. |
| The restarted stream begins at an unexpected point | A new FFmpeg process may reopen the input from its configured starting point rather than resume the interrupted position. | Review the command’s input and playlist behavior, then verify the result in YouTube. Exact continuity is not guaranteed by process restart alone. |
What YouTube archiving does—and does not—mean
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder guidance. That statement does not establish that every reconnect produces one continuous recording or preserves a single broadcast across an interruption. Check the resulting broadcast and archive in YouTube rather than treating archiving as a recovery mechanism.
