For an FFmpeg stream that loses its connection while sending video to YouTube, use FFmpeg’s FIFO output muxer with recovery enabled. HTTP reconnect options solve a different problem: they can help FFmpeg reconnect to an HTTP input, but they do not make an RTMP output reconnect to YouTube. Which approach applies depends on which connection failed.
First identify which connection failed
FFmpeg may be receiving media from one source and sending it to another destination. Check the error message and the command’s input and output paths to determine where the interruption occurred.

These mechanisms are not interchangeable. A reconnect option on an HTTP input does not repair a failed RTMP output.
For an RTMP output failure, configure FIFO recovery
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer documentation provides an output-side recovery pattern intended to keep processing at real-time rate and attempt recovery after a temporary output failure. The documented example uses a one-second recovery wait:

Replace INPUT with your actual media source. Replace the illustrative RTMP destination with the current YouTube Live server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the options
- Check the local FIFO muxer help:
ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo. - Confirm the installed build lists the FIFO muxer and the recovery options used in the command, including
attempt_recoveryandrecovery_wait_time. - If the options are unavailable, use a build that supports them or choose another recovery design; do not assume the command will work just because it appears in the documentation.
Understand buffering and dropped packets
The example enables drop_pkts_on_overflow. Buffer overflow and the time needed to reconnect can affect what is ultimately sent, so this configuration does not promise that every packet will be preserved or that viewers will see uninterrupted playback. A one-second recovery wait is the example’s retry interval, not a guarantee that YouTube will accept the reconnect or continue the same live event.

For an HTTP input failure, use HTTP reconnect options
When FFmpeg is reading an HTTP source that disconnects, the HTTP protocol supports options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and controls for retry delays and limits. They apply to the HTTP input, not to a separate RTMP output. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the supported options and their behavior.
FFmpeg documents reconnect_at_eof this way: “If set then eof is treated like an error and causes reconnection, this is useful for live / endless streams.” That setting may suit a live or endless HTTP input, but it does not make an unavailable source available again. Whether input recovery succeeds depends on the source and the nature of its interruption.

Check YouTube’s ingest URL, key, and stream health
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the current server URL and stream key, then enter them in FFmpeg’s RTMP destination. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find and enter these details.
- If YouTube reports that the key is invalid, obtain a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder, following YouTube’s stream-key troubleshooting guidance.
- Choose a stream quality that is reliable for your available upload connection. Test upload bitrate and check audio and motion using content representative of the planned broadcast.
- During the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. These checks can help diagnose or reduce connection and configuration problems; they cannot guarantee that every outage will resume the same YouTube session. See YouTube’s live-streaming encoder settings and recommendations.
Test recovery before relying on it
- Use a private or otherwise safe test stream and the exact FFmpeg build, input, output settings, and YouTube workflow intended for the event.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that YouTube receives the stream and reports acceptable stream health.
- Briefly interrupt the relevant network connection in a controlled way. Note whether the input or output fails, what FFmpeg logs, and what Live Control Room reports.
- After connectivity returns, confirm whether the same live event continues or whether you must start a new event. Repeat with conditions representative of the connection risks you expect.
There is no universal outage duration at which recovery is guaranteed. The outcome depends on the interruption, source, FFmpeg behavior, and YouTube’s handling of the reconnect; the cited guidance does not establish a success rate or a universal session-continuity rule.
Troubleshoot common reconnect failures
