How to Loop Prerecorded Showroom Videos on YouTube Live with VLC

VLC can repeat showroom footage with VLM, but looping and YouTube ingest are separate. Here is how to configure the loop, verify an encoder path, and test clip transitions.

You can use VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) to repeat a prerecorded showroom video or playlist, but looping the footage and sending a continuous live feed to YouTube are separate jobs. VLM documents how to restart a broadcast’s input list; YouTube requires an encoder that supports the ingest method selected in Live Control Room. The available VLC documentation does not verify direct YouTube RTMPS output for a particular VLC version, so confirm your encoder path before relying on it for a public stream.

What VLC can—and cannot—do

VLM’s loop behavior restarts a broadcast’s input list after its final item finishes. That covers playback repetition: it can make a sequence of showroom clips start again when the list reaches the end. YouTube ingest is a different part of the setup. YouTube requires an encoder that supports the protocol you select, such as RTMPS or HLS.

VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 documentation includes a VLM playlist example that uses sout-keep to prevent the stream from breaking when a playlist item ends. Its example sends an HTTP stream to a receiver on the local network; it is not a YouTube configuration, and it does not establish that every VLC setup will transition seamlessly.

In particular, the documented material does not confirm that a specific VLC release can publish directly to YouTube’s current RTMPS ingest. Do not assume that a VLC loop alone makes a YouTube Live stream. Verify the outgoing encoder and protocol compatibility for the version and configuration you plan to use.

Prepare the showroom footage

Choose what repeats

  • One video: Configure the broadcast so its input is the single showroom recording and the broadcast repeats it.
  • A sequence: Put the showroom clips in the intended order in the broadcast input list. VLM’s documented loop behavior restarts that list after its last input finishes.

Check the presentation

Before configuring a live event, play the footage and check that its picture and audio are suitable for a continuous presentation. Pay particular attention to the last moments of the final clip and the opening of the first clip: those are the points viewers will see together when the list restarts. The available documentation does not specify a universal VLC bitrate, resolution, or keyframe setting for this workflow; use settings supported by your chosen encoder and appropriate to the source and YouTube’s current guidance.

Configure the VLC loop

  1. Define the broadcast input list in VLM. Add the single video or the showroom clips in their intended playback order. VLM treats successive inputs as a playlist.
  2. Enable the broadcast’s loop behavior. The VLM reference documents loop and unloop. With looping enabled, playback restarts the input list after the last input finishes.
  3. Keep the streaming output active across item changes. VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 VLM playlist example uses sout-keep for this purpose. Treat it as a documented example, not proof that your own output path or VLC version will behave identically.
  4. Verify the local playback and output before connecting it to a public event. Confirm that the list restarts as intended and that playback remains available at the clip boundary. The VLC 3.0 example’s local HTTP receiver demonstrates a LAN stream, not YouTube ingest.

Connect a compatible encoder to YouTube

RTMPS

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and requires an encoder that supports RTMPS. In YouTube Live Control Room, open Stream settings, use the lock icon to reveal the current RTMPS server URL, and copy the stream key into the compatible encoder. Use the values shown in your own Live Control Room rather than a hard-coded server address. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not include it in screenshots, public notes, or examples.

YouTube’s RTMPS help documentation says: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” That requirement applies to the encoder-to-YouTube connection; it does not confirm that the VLC version you have installed supports the required output.

HLS

YouTube also documents HLS ingest. It requires an HLS-capable encoder and an HLS-specific URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption apart from HTTPS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. HLS is an alternative ingest method, not a VLC looping feature.

If VLC does not provide a compatible output

Use an encoder documented to support the RTMPS or HLS method selected in Live Control Room. The available documentation does not establish a particular bridge application or a validated way to wire VLC’s repeated playback into an external encoder. Confirm that connection independently before scheduling the stream; do not infer compatibility from the fact that VLC can repeat the source.

Test the complete path before going public

  1. Start the repeated VLC playback and check that the intended video or full list restarts.
  2. Start the compatible encoder and confirm that it is using the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  3. Inspect YouTube’s preview for a stable picture and audio, the expected aspect ratio, and playback across a clip boundary and the end-to-start loop.
  4. Use an appropriate private or unlisted test workflow before starting the public live event. This is a recommended verification step, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Choose the setup that fits your operating needs

Option What it handles What to verify or consider
VLC with VLM Repeats one input or an input list; the VLC Desktop 3.0 example uses sout-keep to keep an output active when an item ends. The example is a local HTTP demonstration. Direct output to YouTube RTMPS from a particular VLC version is not established; verify encoder and protocol support.
Another compatible encoder with repeated playback supplied to it Can provide the YouTube ingest connection if it supports the selected RTMPS or HLS method. The playback-to-encoder wiring depends on the setup. The available documentation does not validate a specific bridge method.

Troubleshooting

The video repeats locally, but YouTube does not receive a live feed

Looping confirms the playback behavior, not the ingest connection. Check that the encoder sending to YouTube supports the protocol selected in Live Control Room, and that it is using the current server URL and stream key.

The stream stops or breaks when a clip ends

Check that the broadcast input list is looping and that the outgoing stream remains active as the next item starts. VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 playlist example uses sout-keep to avoid breaking the stream when an item ends, but test your own version and output path rather than assuming the example guarantees continuity.

YouTube reports an SSL or connection problem with RTMPS

Confirm that you selected the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS help page suggests port 443 in certain SSL-error cases; follow its current troubleshooting guidance for the specific error rather than changing ports without checking the cause.

HLS connects, but the delay is higher than expected

YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers segments. Also check that the encoder meets YouTube’s HLS segment, playlist, and HTTPS requirements.

The first clip starts, but the sequence does not restart

Check that looping is enabled for the VLM broadcast and that the intended clips are all part of its input list. The documented loop behavior restarts that list after its final input finishes.
