In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, select or schedule your stream, then choose Edit > Monetization. Turn monetization on and set mid-rolls to Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual. YouTube recommends automatic placement when you cannot reliably predict the right moment: its system aims for natural breakpoints and can pause ads during high engagement. No setting guarantees that an ad will serve—or that every viewer will avoid an interruption.
Set mid-roll ads in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Open Edit > Monetization and turn monetization on.
- Choose Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual for mid-rolls.
- If you choose Scheduled, select one of the available intervals: 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. If you choose Manual, insert ad breaks from Live Control Room while the stream is running.
Live Watch Page ad revenue requires accepting YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Eligibility can vary by channel; check the monetization status and options shown in your own Studio account.
Choose the timing method that fits your stream

For an unscripted or continuously changing stream, Automatic is the practical starting point. For a programme with dependable transitions, Scheduled can make the configured cadence predictable. Use Manual when someone is actively monitoring the stream and can spot suitable lulls. YouTube’s guidance says scheduled and manual choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic; it does not promise a particular revenue or fill rate for any mode.
Reduce the chance of interrupting an important moment
Use Automatic mode’s delay for key moments
When Automatic is enabled, Delay ads in Live Control Room postpones mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube displays a five-second countdown before ads resume. Note the distinction: manually placed mid-rolls still display while this delay feature is on, so the delay is not a blanket block on manual insertions.

For Manual mode, wait for a natural break
Prefer a pause, transition, or other genuine lull to placing a slot in the middle of speech or action. You control when to offer the slot, not whether an ad is served. YouTube’s guidance says disruptive slots are less likely to run.
Understand what viewers may see
YouTube’s ad systems decide whether a slot serves an ad. Some viewers may see no ad and continue watching; viewers who receive an ad rejoin after it ends or they skip it. A configured interval or manual insertion therefore describes an opportunity, not guaranteed delivery to every viewer.

What the available revenue figure does—and does not—show
YouTube reported in January 2024 that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. YouTube described this as an average comparison between channels that enabled live automatic mid-roll ads and channels that did not, across 207 countries. It is a platform-reported comparison, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
Use Take a Break for an away period
Take a Break is separate from the mid-roll schedule. It lets you show a 1-, 3-, or 5-minute away screen. Eligible viewers may see ads during the break; if ads do not run, viewers see an away slate. The countdown reaching zero does not end the break automatically: you must end it in Live Control Room.

You can choose a custom slate from your video library if the video is public or unlisted and allows embedding. YouTube’s instructions also describe adding the overlay as a browser source in an encoder.
Optional manual control with Stream Deck
YouTube Help documents inserting ads with an Elgato Stream Deck by downloading the YouTube plugin. This is an optional way to trigger manual breaks; it is not needed for automatic or scheduled ads, and manual breaks can also be controlled in Live Control Room. Check current plugin and device compatibility before choosing a specific model.

What is—and is not—specific to a 24/7 stream
YouTube’s published Live guidance describes general controls for live-stream ads. It does not establish a separate mid-roll schedule, maximum duration, or ad-delivery guarantee for streams that run continuously or for 24 hours. Use the options currently shown in your Live Control Room rather than assuming there is a special 24/7 rule.
Troubleshoot ad-break expectations
- No ad appeared at the scheduled interval: The interval configures a slot, not guaranteed delivery. YouTube’s ad systems determine whether a slot gets an ad.
- An ad interrupted a key moment in Automatic mode: Use Delay ads in Live Control Room before a planned important moment; it delays mid-rolls for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before ads resume.
- A manual ad appeared despite Delay ads: YouTube says manually placed mid-rolls still display when the delay feature is active. Account for that if you are using manual controls.
- Manual slots are not serving reliably: Avoid inserting them mid-sentence or mid-action. YouTube says disruptive placements are less likely to serve.
- Monetization or ad settings are unavailable: Confirm monetization is on, review your channel’s eligibility in Studio, and check whether the Watch Page Monetization Module has been accepted for Watch Page ad revenue.
- A Take a Break screen remains after its timer: End the break yourself in Live Control Room; it does not end automatically at countdown completion.
