There is no reliable India-wide rupee figure for running an OBS playlist stream around the clock: your cost depends on the computer’s actual wall-power draw and the electricity rate applied to your room. For a 30-day estimate, multiply average watts by 0.72 to get monthly kWh, then multiply by your applicable marginal rate per kWh. A 60 W setup, for example, uses about 43.2 kWh in 30 days; at an illustrative ₹3–₹8 per kWh, that is about ₹130–₹346 in energy charges.
Estimate the monthly electricity cost
Use the measured average power for the equipment you want to count—not the power supply’s maximum or nameplate rating.
- Find average wall draw in watts. Measure the computer and any other devices included in your estimate while the playlist is running normally.
- Convert watts to monthly energy. For continuous operation over a 30-day month: average watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000, or simply average watts × 0.72 = monthly kWh.
- Apply your marginal per-unit rate. Multiply the estimated monthly kWh by the rate that applies to the next units on your bill. The result is an estimate of energy charges, not necessarily the full amount your landlord will charge.
For 24/7 operation over 30 days, each 1 W of average draw corresponds to 0.72 kWh. That is arithmetic for this usage period, not a published OBS power statistic.

These are illustrative calculations, not typical OBS computer measurements. The ₹3–₹8/kWh range is a scenario for doing the arithmetic, not a claimed national tariff range. The examples include energy charges only: they do not account for fixed charges, slab thresholds, duties, subsidies, fuel adjustments, landlord markups, or outages.

Why your actual bill may differ
The whole setup’s power draw
OBS has no single fixed electricity draw. The computer’s components and encoding workload affect consumption, as can displays and other connected equipment. A computer by itself will cost less to run than a setup that also counts a monitor, speakers, router, capture devices, or lights. Decide which equipment belongs in your estimate, then measure that equipment together.
Your tariff and room’s billing arrangement
Retail electricity tariffs are set by state commissions, and the applicable rate can depend on consumer category, usage slab, subsidy, fixed charges, duties or cess, and monthly adjustments. The national calculation cannot be completed accurately without your location and bill details.

As a dated local example—not a current quote for your room—the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 tariff compilation lists Chandigarh rates effective 1 August 2024. It shows domestic energy rates of ₹2.75, ₹4.80, and ₹5.40/kWh across listed slabs, plus a ₹30/kW/month fixed charge; the listed commercial rates are ₹4.50, ₹4.70, and ₹5.90/kWh, with fixed or demand charges also applying. Renting a room does not by itself establish that commercial rates apply. An Odisha FY 2025–26 order classifies a dwelling used solely for residential purposes as domestic whether rented or owned, while excluding temporary-stay hotels and guest houses. That is an Odisha-specific example, not a nationwide rule; local orders govern. Ask your landlord what rate applies to the room and how the charge is calculated. If you share a common meter or use a submeter, clarify whether the charge is based on a stated per-unit rate, a share of the bill, or both.

Operating hours and time-of-day rates
For a stream that runs continuously, 24 hours per day is the appropriate estimate; interruptions reduce actual runtime and energy use. Time-of-day tariffs can also affect the rate in some places. Government policy describes state-specified solar-hour tariffs 10–20% below normal and peak-hour tariffs 10–20% above normal. For smart-meter users, the tariff takes effect after a smart meter is installed. Check your state’s order rather than assuming these rates apply to your room. In a Ministry of Power/PIB release dated 23 June 2023, Union Power Minister R. K. Singh said, “With awareness and effective utilization of ToD tariff mechanism, consumers can reduce their electricity bills.”
Measure the setup instead of guessing
A compatible plug-in energy meter can show connected equipment’s watts and accumulated kWh. For example, the Yantram PM10 product page describes watt and kWh readings and an expense display. This kind of meter is optional measurement equipment, not a streaming requirement.

- Check that the meter matches your socket and the connected load’s rating.
- Plug in the complete set of devices you want to count. Include the display if it is part of the setup, and leave out devices you do not intend to include.
- Run the playlist in representative conditions and record accumulated kWh over several days. A momentary watt reading may not capture a changing workload.
- For a variable load, divide the measured kWh by the elapsed hours and multiply by 1,000 to find average watts. Then use average watts × 0.72 for a 30-day, 24-hour monthly estimate.
- Multiply that estimate by the applicable marginal energy rate, using your bill or a rate confirmed by the utility or landlord.
The U.S. Department of Energy advises measuring fluctuating consumption over time and averaging it; see its guide to measuring home energy use. A plug-in meter measures consumption, not your tariff category or your landlord’s rate. Ask how any submeter is read, what per-unit rate is used, and whether fixed charges are shared.
