Audio streaming sends playable sound to your device over an internet connection as you listen. To get started, you need a supported phone, tablet, computer or other player, a streaming app or service, internet access, and headphones or speakers. The quality setting, connection stability, and the path from your device to your headphones or speakers all affect playback and data use.
What happens when you press play?
You choose audio in a streaming app, and the app uses your device’s internet connection to obtain audio for playback. The player prepares incoming audio so it can keep playing while more arrives; this preparation is called buffering. If the connection is too slow or unstable for the selected quality, playback may pause or the service may adjust quality.
Spotify says its app uses some of the device’s bandwidth to play music without buffering, and that its default audio-quality setting adjusts quality to help prevent stuttering. The precise delivery technology and buffer size are not the same thing as this listener-facing explanation, and are not established by those statements.
Streaming and downloads are different
Live listening depends on an internet connection. Some services also offer offline downloads, which let you save audio in advance and play it without a live connection. Availability, eligibility and limits depend on the specific service and plan, so check the provider’s terms for your account.

What you need to listen
- A playback device: a compatible phone, tablet, computer or other supported player.
- A streaming service and app: availability, formats and features vary by provider and region.
- Internet access for live listening: Wi-Fi or mobile data. A stable connection matters, particularly at higher quality settings.
- Headphones or speakers: built-in speakers are enough to begin; external equipment is optional for ordinary streaming.
Home Wi-Fi can help avoid using mobile data. You do not need specialized headphones or a lossless-capable setup just to stream music.
Audio quality, compression and data use
Audio codecs encode sound for storage or transmission. Lossy compression reduces audio data and can reduce file size, with some audio information discarded. Lossless compression reduces file size while preserving the encoded audio data. A service may offer several formats or quality levels, and the labels and settings are provider-specific.

Spotify’s published settings are an example, not a universal scale
Spotify Support lists quality settings with approximate bitrate equivalents. These figures describe Spotify’s settings, not industry-wide definitions of Low, Normal, High or Very High.
| Spotify setting | Published equivalent |
|---|---|
| Low | Approximately 24 kbit/s |
| Normal | Approximately 96 kbit/s |
| High | Approximately 160 kbit/s |
| Very High | Approximately 320 kbit/s |
| Lossless | Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC |
The four bitrate equivalents come from Spotify Support’s audio-quality guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. Spotify’s lossless figure is documented in its support guidance and its September 10, 2025 announcement. Higher streaming quality and lossless playback use more data. Apple also says lossless streaming over cellular or Wi-Fi uses significantly more data. There is no single data-per-hour figure that applies to every service and setting.

How to choose a setting
- Prioritize reliable playback: start with the default or a lower setting if audio stutters or your mobile connection is limited.
- Consider data limits: higher settings consume more data. Use Wi-Fi where practical if you want to avoid mobile-data use.
- Try lossless only if the whole playback path supports it: the service’s setting, device and headphone or speaker connection all matter.
- Choose what sounds good to you: a higher-quality label does not guarantee that every listener will hear a difference.
What lossless audio does—and does not—guarantee
Lossless describes the compression format: it preserves the encoded audio data. It does not, by itself, guarantee that the sound reaches your ears losslessly. The service, device and connection to headphones, speakers, a receiver or a car system can each affect the playback path.
Apple identifies ALAC as its lossless compression technology and recommends a wired connection to headphones, receivers or powered speakers for lossless playback. Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers, or a non-Bluetooth Spotify Connect connection, for its smoothest lossless experience. These are provider-specific recommendations, not a claim that all wireless systems behave identically.

Spotify’s September 10, 2025 announcement says Bluetooth does not provide enough bandwidth for its lossless signal to reach the device without compression. That statement concerns Spotify’s lossless signal and guidance; it should not be read as a universal assessment of every Bluetooth device or codec.
If you specifically want to try a wired lossless path, use headphones compatible with your device. Depending on its port and your headphones, you may need an adapter or cable. Wired equipment is not necessary for ordinary streaming.

How to decide which service and setup fit you
- Check audio options. Compare available formats and quality levels, and whether lossless playback is included and available for your region and plan.
- Check your actual playback chain. Confirm that your device and the connection to your headphones, speakers, car system or receiver support the quality you want.
- Account for data and offline listening. Higher quality uses more data. If you need listening without a live connection, verify that downloads are available to you and review the provider’s eligibility and limits.
- Compare catalog and terms directly. Music availability, subscription price, plan eligibility and regional terms vary. Verify current details with each provider.
- Test for reliability and preference. Choose a setting that sounds satisfactory and plays consistently on your connection; do not assume every listener will perceive a difference between lossy and lossless audio.
A different kind of streaming: continuous YouTube video
StreamNeo is not a music-listening service: it keeps a YouTube channel live around the clock from videos you upload or arrange into a playlist. If that separate video use case is what you mean by streaming, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- There is one free day per account with no card required. Billing options are a day, a week, a month, six months or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
The Monthly option is $9.99 per month. The first day is free with no card. If continuous YouTube video streaming is your goal, start your free StreamNeo day.
