Amazon CloudFront for Live Streaming: What You Need to Know

CloudFront delivers live video from an origin; encoding and packaging happen elsewhere. Learn the AWS workflow, format-specific cache behaviors, LL-HLS settings, origin protection, redundancy, and latency limits.

Amazon CloudFront delivers a live stream to viewers; it does not encode or package the video. A typical AWS workflow encodes the incoming feed with AWS Elemental MediaLive, prepares delivery outputs with MediaPackage or serves already-formatted outputs from MediaStore, then uses CloudFront to distribute the resulting manifests and video segments.

What CloudFront does in a live-video workflow

CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) layer: it serves encoded and packaged video from an HTTP origin. An encoder must first turn the incoming video into segments and create manifest files that tell players how those segments fit together. Common delivery formats include HLS, MPEG-DASH, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. CloudFront distributes the prepared outputs; it does not replace the encoder or packager. AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guide describes this pattern.

AWS presents MediaLive as an encoder and MediaPackage or MediaStore as possible origin approaches. Other tools, including third-party encoders or packagers, can also be part of a CloudFront workflow; AWS services are not the only possible architecture.

Choose an origin and packaging approach

Use MediaPackage when outputs need packaging

MediaPackage is useful when you need to package content into different delivery formats for playback devices or use packaging features such as DRM. AWS’s CloudFront video streaming guide explains the MediaPackage and MediaStore approaches.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use MediaStore when outputs are already formatted

MediaStore can serve as an origin when your encoded output is already in the formats your viewers need and you want a scalable origin for CloudFront to distribute. The decision depends on whether you need additional packaging or can serve the prepared outputs directly.

Configure CloudFront for a MediaPackage live endpoint

AWS’s setup procedure assumes you already have a MediaPackage channel and endpoints. In CloudFront, add the endpoint as an origin and create cache behaviors for the request paths that serve manifests and media segments. Use the endpoint’s path prefix so each behavior routes to the intended endpoint. The extensions vary by format:

Set cache behavior for live updates

AWS recommends a minimum TTL of five seconds or less in the documented workflow to help avoid serving stale live content. This setting is not a guarantee of a particular viewer latency or live-edge distance; end-to-end delay depends on the full workflow and configuration.

Forward only query strings required by enabled features

Configure the manifest cache policy to pass through query strings when the corresponding MediaPackage feature needs them. AWS identifies these examples:

  • m for the endpoint’s modified-time tag.
  • start and end for time-shifted viewing.
  • aws.manifestfilter for manifest filtering.
  • _HLS_msn and _HLS_part for LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, so those requests can reach the origin.

Do not treat this as a requirement to forward every query string on every behavior. Set the policy to match the features and request paths in use. AWS details the MediaPackage cache behavior and LL-HLS requirements in its live-streaming guide.

Protect the origin and plan for resilience

Authenticate CloudFront to MediaPackage

AWS recommends enabling header-based MediaPackage CDN Authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and the CloudFront distribution. In AWS’s reference solution, a custom HTTP header authenticates requests, and the CDN identifier is stored securely in AWS Secrets Manager. This protects the origin-to-CDN connection; it is separate from viewer authentication or entitlement checks that your application may need.

AWS states in its CloudFront Developer Guide: “We recommend enabling header-based MediaPackage CDN Authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and the CloudFront distribution.” This is AWS’s recommendation for this architecture, not a universal security standard.

Design redundancy explicitly

AWS’s Live Streaming reference architecture illustrates two input feeds for MediaLive redundancy, MediaPackage outputs for HLS, DASH, and CMAF, and CloudFront delivery. Its architecture describes support for primary and secondary live streams. These are design choices to implement and verify in the workflow; using CloudFront alone does not automatically configure redundant ingest or failover. See the AWS architecture overview and architecture details.

What to expect for latency

AWS documents low-latency workflows for MediaLive and MediaPackage and provides LL-HLS-specific CloudFront cache-policy guidance. The cited documentation does not establish one universally applicable end-to-end latency figure for CloudFront live streaming. Latency depends on the encoder, packaging mode, origin, player behavior, and configuration. Do not infer a sub-second result—or any fixed figure—from the CloudFront name or a reference architecture alone. AWS’s MediaLive low-latency output instructions cover a specific part of the workflow.

Questions to settle before choosing a design

  • Are the required formats already available? If so, a direct origin approach such as MediaStore may fit; if you need packaging for different formats or features, consider MediaPackage.
  • Which players and devices must work? Choose the delivery formats and endpoint paths to match your playback requirements.
  • What latency target do you need? Identify whether LL-HLS is needed and configure the full chain accordingly; no single CloudFront setting determines end-to-end latency.
  • How will you protect access? Plan origin authorization separately from viewer authentication and entitlements.
  • What recovery behavior is required? Specify redundant feeds, primary and secondary streams, and failover behavior rather than assuming the CDN provides them automatically.
  • What will the workload cost in your regions? Compare the services, formats, traffic, and resilience requirements for the intended deployment. The cited AWS architecture documents do not establish one lowest-cost configuration.

Or let it run in the cloud

It streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not live camera footage.

  • Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot.
  • Automatic recovery starts if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account.
  • Monthly: $9.99 per month.
