There is no universal price winner between fiber and mobile broadband for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The right comparison starts with the stream’s bitrate, then weighs each local plan’s full recurring cost, sustained upload performance, data allowance, hotspot limits and fees. A plan that looks cheaper per month may cost more—or may not reliably carry the stream—once those terms are included.
Start with the stream’s data use
Bitrate is the baseline because a continuous stream uploads data around the clock. YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube also recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health during a broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Estimate transfer for the billing period with this formula:
bitrate in Mbps ÷ 8 × seconds in the billing period = approximate data in MB

For 30 days of uninterrupted streaming, the period is 2,592,000 seconds. Convert the result to decimal GB or TB by dividing megabytes by 1,000 or 1,000,000. For example, StreamNeo’s 2026 guide gives an arithmetic estimate of about 1.46 TB over 30 days at 4.5 Mbps; it is a vendor-published example, not a universal measurement. Actual transfer varies with bitrate, protocol overhead and uptime. Leave headroom rather than treating the estimate as an exact bill forecast. Compare the plans available at your address
There is no basis for naming fiber or mobile as cheaper without the reader’s location and the actual offers. Compare equivalent billing periods and the same encoder settings, and include both recurring and one-time costs.

A wired Ethernet connection between the encoder and router or gateway can avoid relying on local Wi-Fi for that link. It does not increase the broadband service’s capacity or remove a data cap. Why a mobile plan’s advertised price can mislead
A phone plan that includes “unlimited” data does not necessarily provide unlimited hotspot data at the speed a continuous live stream needs. The FCC’s 2024 report says smartphone hotspot capability may require a more expensive plan or be limited in speed or data allowance. Check the plan’s mobile broadband label and its service terms, not just the headline phone-data allowance. See the FCC’s broadband labels information.

The FCC’s 2024 report described typical nationwide U.S. post-paid unlimited mobile plans as costing $50 or more for the first line and prepaid plans as costing $30 or more. Those are report-era context figures, not current quotes, and they do not establish that hotspot use is unlimited. The report also summarized fixed-provider caps near 1 TB and commonly $10 for each additional 50 GB; these figures likewise describe the report-era U.S. market, not a current offer for any provider. Use current local plan terms for a real comparison.
In the United States, broadband labels are a useful starting point for comparing base and introductory prices, data, typical speeds and relevant terms. Add equipment, installation and applicable taxes or fees, then check what happens when an allowance is exceeded. The FCC report noted that mobile plans allowing smartphone hotspot use typically cost more, require a higher-priced plan, or limit speed or data; that distinction matters for a nonstop upload.

Check whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate
The connection needs to maintain adequate upload capacity, not merely show a high result in a brief speed test. Test from the actual encoder location, using the intended network connection, and observe performance over a sustained period and at times when local demand is high. Leave margin above the encoder bitrate for variation and overhead; matching the bitrate exactly leaves no room for fluctuations.
The FCC’s 2024 report gives a median U.S. mobile upload speed of 9.80 Mbps measured in April 2024 and a median fixed upload speed of 19.45 Mbps measured in November 2021. The dates differ, so these figures are not a same-period head-to-head comparison or a prediction for a particular address. They also do not establish whether a specific plan can reliably carry a chosen stream. Use the current plan’s disclosed terms and a test at the intended location.

Make the decision using total cost and stream risk
- Set the stream settings. Choose resolution, frame rate and encoder bitrate, using YouTube’s recommended settings as a reference.
- Estimate monthly transfer. Apply the bitrate formula to the billing period, convert to decimal GB or TB, and allow for overhead and uptime variation.
- Gather actual offers. Record each plan’s recurring price after promotions, fees, required equipment, installation and contract conditions.
- Read the data and hotspot terms. Note the allowance, hotspot-specific limit, throttling or deprioritization rules, overage charges and fair-use conditions.
- Test sustained upload at the encoder location. Compare the result with the selected bitrate and check performance during likely peak-use periods.
- Compare the same period and settings. Choose the lower total cost only if the connection can sustain the upload and the allowance and terms support continuous use.
Fiber may be the better fit when its local plan offers suitable upload performance and adequate data terms at a lower all-in cost. Mobile may be viable where sustained local performance and hotspot terms are sufficient, but a low advertised price alone does not show that. Without actual local plans, neither is a defensible universal winner.
