Canceling a stock subscription does not automatically revoke every license already granted—but the answer depends on the provider, exact plan, license tier, when the clip was licensed or registered, and how the stream will be used. A downloaded file by itself is not proof that you have permission to use it.
Check the license, not just the subscription status
A subscription is how you access stock assets; the license is what governs a particular use. Those are not always the same thing. Shutterstock says video downloaded with a valid license can continue to be used after a plan ends. Adobe Stock’s terms generally preserve perpetual licenses after termination, subject to exceptions for Unmetered or Unlimited plans. Other plan rules can be narrower, so do not assume one provider’s policy applies to another.
For a YouTube livestream, verify that the license covers the clip’s use in that production and that any audience, platform, territory, or asset-specific restrictions are met. YouTube’s handling of a copyright or Content ID claim is separate from what a stock provider’s license says; a provider policy cannot guarantee how YouTube will process a particular claim.

How to assess a clip before using it in a stream
- Identify the provider and exact plan. Record whether it was a standard subscription, an Unlimited or Unmetered plan, or another product with its own policy.
- Find the license or registration for this asset and production. Match the asset ID to a receipt, license history, certificate, or project registration. A file on your drive does not, by itself, establish that it was licensed.
- Check when the relevant use was licensed or registered. Distinguish a production published while subscribed from a new stream or newly published version after expiry. Policies can treat existing uses and new uses differently.
- Read the usage scope and audience conditions. Confirm that YouTube livestreaming is covered, check any audience threshold, and follow restrictions for the asset, territory, or license tier. If using Shutterstock’s standard video license, its guidance specifies a 500,000 audience limit for YouTube web use.
- Check for special asset restrictions. Editorial-only assets may have separate use and attribution requirements. Adobe’s license terms describe these separately at Adobe’s license terms page.
- Save your proof before access changes. Keep the asset identifier, invoice, license certificate or history, registration record, and a copy of the terms that applied when the license was granted. Adobe says to download licensed assets because assets or license-history outputs might not remain available after termination.
Common situations that change the answer
The clip was downloaded but never licensed or registered
Do not treat the download as permission. Shutterstock Unlimited, for example, requires each use to be registered while the plan is active. Check the asset’s license history and the terms for the plan you actually had.
The stream is a new use after cancellation
Check whether the applicable license is perpetual and whether its grant covers this use. A policy preserving a previously licensed asset does not necessarily authorize a new use under a plan that restricts post-expiry use. Epidemic Sound’s music policy illustrates why timing and asset type matter, but it is not a footage license.

The channel may exceed a license’s audience limit
Shutterstock’s standard video license guidance sets a 500,000 audience limit for YouTube web use. If the audience or distribution is outside the tier’s scope, review whether a broader license applies before streaming.
You receive a YouTube copyright or Content ID claim
A stock provider’s statement that a use is licensed does not establish how YouTube will adjudicate a specific claim. Keep your proof accessible and follow the provider’s and YouTube’s applicable claim procedures; do not assume that a valid stock license automatically prevents a claim.
