Use FFmpeg’s ffprobe to inspect the actual video file: confirm a 3840×2160 video stream, examine its frame-rate values, count frames across the file, and look for repeated frames or signs of upscaling. These checks establish what the encoded file contains; they cannot, on their own, prove that a camera originally captured genuine 4K at 60 fps. Verify the source and the YouTube Live settings separately.
What “truly 4K 60fps” can mean
A delivered file can report 3840×2160 dimensions and a nominal frame rate near 60 fps without proving how the footage was captured. It may have been enlarged from a smaller image, converted to a higher frame rate, or edited to repeat frames. File inspection is useful for checking encoded properties and consistency, but claims about original camera capture require provenance, such as the camera original or independent recording records.
FFmpeg describes ffprobe as a tool that gathers information from multimedia streams and prints it in human- and machine-readable form. Its documentation covers stream inspection, frame display, and per-stream frame counting: FFprobe documentation.
Inspect the delivered file with ffprobe
Run a stream and frame-count check
Install FFmpeg for your operating system, open a terminal or command prompt, change to the folder containing the video, and run:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -count_frames -show_streams -show_format -of json input.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with the filename, including its extension. This selects the first video stream, requests frame counting, and prints stream and container information as JSON. The fields available depend on the file’s container and stream.
Check dimensions and rate fields
In the selected video stream, look for width and height of 3840 and 2160. Then inspect the frame-rate fields, commonly reported as rational values such as 60/1 or 60000/1001. A rounded display of “60” can conceal a different underlying cadence, so retain the exact value and do not rely on a filename, editing-project label, or operating-system summary.

Look for nb_read_frames when the frame count is available. The command’s -count_frames option asks ffprobe to count frames per stream and report the count in the stream section. For detailed inspection, ffprobe can also display frame-level information; see its documentation for frame options.
Cross-check frame count against duration
Compare the counted frames with the stream or file duration. Dividing the frame count by duration gives a useful average-rate consistency check, but it is not a forensic test: variable frame rates, container timing, and stream details can complicate the calculation. A mismatch is a reason to inspect further, not by itself proof that a file is fake.

Look for repeated frames and upscaling
Inspect moving footage, not just a still
Review representative decoded frames across the file, especially scenes with smooth or predictable movement. Repeated imagery can make a nominally high-frame-rate file behave visually like lower-frame-rate footage. Frame-level inspection can help locate repetition; visual playback alone may not reveal every duplicate.
Assess detail cautiously
Check fine textures and edges for softness or scaling artifacts that might suggest lower-resolution material was enlarged to 3840×2160. The dimensions describe the encoded output size, not necessarily the detail captured by the original camera. Visual evidence is suggestive rather than definitive; compression, focus, motion blur, and post-production can also affect apparent detail.

Use provenance when authenticity matters
If you need to substantiate how footage was captured, compare the delivered file with the camera original, production records, or independently retained source material. Metadata describes what the encoded stream reports; it does not establish the complete history of recording and processing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure YouTube Live separately from file verification
A valid 4K/60 file does not automatically mean the live encoder is configured for 4K/60. YouTube’s current English encoder guidance supports 4K/2160p at 60 fps. For H.264 at that setting, YouTube recommends a 35 Mbps live-ingest bitrate. Its guidance also lists a 10–40 Mbps range for AV1/H.265 at 4K/60; check the current codec-specific table in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance before configuring a stream, because platform recommendations can change.

Settings to check in the Live Control Room and encoder
- Resolution and frame rate: select 2160p/4K at 60 fps in the encoder when that is the intended output and the source supports it.
- Codec and bitrate: match the encoder’s codec to its corresponding YouTube recommendation. The 35 Mbps figure is the H.264 recommendation for 4K/60 live ingest, not a measurement or minimum for the source file.
- Transport: YouTube’s documentation recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video.
- Keyframes and rate control: use a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and constant bitrate encoding, as specified in YouTube’s guidance.
- Latency: YouTube notes that its 4K/2160 option does not offer the low-latency improvement option and is set to normal latency.
- Test and monitor: send a test stream with representative motion and audio, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast.
YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. A viewer’s available playback quality is therefore not a direct readout of the source file or the incoming encoder settings.
Do not confuse live ingest with upload encoding
YouTube’s separate upload recommendations say to encode and upload content at the same frame rate at which it was recorded; common listed rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. Its current SDR upload guidance lists 53–68 Mbps for 2160p high-frame-rate uploads. That is an upload recommendation, not the live-ingest bitrate. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Troubleshoot an unexpected result
- The file is not 3840×2160: you may be inspecting the wrong file or video stream, or the export may have used different dimensions. Check the selected stream and inspect the final delivered file rather than the project settings.
- The frame-rate value is not a simple 60: read the exact rational value and compare frame count with duration. Do not treat rounded labels as precise cadence evidence.
- The counted frame total is missing: confirm that the file has a readable video stream and that ffprobe completed the frame-count operation. Its reported fields vary by container and stream.
- Motion looks less smooth than expected: examine frame-level output for repeated imagery and compare with an original recording if available.
- 2160p is not available in the live setup or viewers see lower resolutions: check encoder output, codec-specific settings, stream health, and YouTube processing. YouTube transcodes for delivery, so playback choices need not match the incoming source or encoder setting.
- The picture looks soft despite 3840×2160 dimensions: consider scaling, focus, motion blur, compression, and post-production. Dimensions alone cannot verify original captured detail.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the file is ready and the goal is to keep a YouTube loop running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for playing uploaded videos as a YouTube live stream. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
