OBS Studio is the best general starting point on Linux for looping a local video on YouTube Live. Use its Media Source with Loop enabled for one file, or its VLC Video Source for a playlist. For 4K at 60 fps, the software is only part of the setup: your encoder, drivers, sustained computer performance, and upload connection must all handle the output. This is a workflow-fit recommendation based on documented features, not a benchmark showing OBS is fastest or most reliable on every Linux system.

Which Linux option fits your video?

Option Best fit Trade-offs
OBS Studio Media Source Looping a single local video file Simple GUI workflow; encoding performance depends on your computer and drivers. OBS documents Media Source for Linux and its Loop control. OBS Media Sources
OBS Studio VLC Video Source Looping a playlist Requires VLC installed; 64-bit OBS needs matching 64-bit VLC. OBS documents playlist playback and Loop Playlist. OBS Media Sources
OBS hardware encoder Reducing CPU encoding work when your hardware supports a suitable encoder Not a separate looping app: it is an encoder choice within OBS. Compatibility and sustained performance depend on GPU or CPU generation and drivers. OBS Hardware Encoding
YouTube HLS ingest Advanced workflows where high resolution and higher latency are acceptable Requires a specific media format and transport setup; RTMP/RTMPS is the simpler starting point for a standard OBS loop-to-live workflow. YouTube encoder settings

The practical choice comes down to whether you have one file or a playlist, what encoders your system supports, whether it can sustain the chosen bitrate, and how much latency you can accept. There is no controlled head-to-head performance comparison here between OBS and FFmpeg for this exact workflow, so choose based on documented fit and your own test rather than assuming one is universally faster.

Set up a looping video in OBS

For one local video

  1. Open OBS and add a scene if you do not already have one.
  2. In Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
  3. Name the source, then browse to the local video file.
  4. Enable Loop in the source properties. Confirm the preview plays and returns to the start when the file ends.

For a playlist

  1. Install VLC for your Linux distribution. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install the matching 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, select + under Sources, then add VLC Video Source.
  3. Add the video files or playlist in the source properties and enable or confirm Loop Playlist.
  4. Check that the playlist advances through each item and returns to the beginning as intended.

OBS documents both source types for Linux, but menu labels can vary slightly by OBS version or packaging. If the VLC source is missing, first confirm VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS.

Configure OBS for YouTube 4K at 60 fps

Video and encoder output

Set the stream resolution to 3840×2160 and frame rate to 60 fps if your source, computer, encoder, and connection can sustain it. In OBS, configure the stream output to use a codec and bitrate accepted by YouTube. YouTube’s current English encoder-settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. The table is subject to change, so check YouTube’s live encoder settings when you configure OBS.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The opened YouTube table accessed in 2026 lists 50 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate at 4K/2160p 60 fps. For AV1 or HEVC at the same resolution and frame rate, it lists 35 Mbps recommended, with a 10 Mbps lower bound; H.264’s listed lower bound is 14 Mbps. These are YouTube’s published recommendations and bounds, not a guarantee that a particular network or computer can maintain a stable stream.

Keyframes, latency, and encoder choice

  • Keyframes: Use the recommended two-second interval; YouTube lists a maximum of four seconds.
  • Latency: YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency because its low-latency option is unavailable at 4K.
  • Hardware encoding: OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync options on Linux. Availability depends on hardware generation and drivers. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU work, but earlier hardware generations may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate; check codec support and sustained throughput on your own system. Prepare the YouTube stream and test it

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key using the available option in your OBS version. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. In OBS, verify the video source loops, the intended resolution and frame rate are set, and the output encoder matches the YouTube ingest settings.
  3. Check your actual upload speed and stability rather than relying only on the speed advertised for your internet plan. The selected bitrate must fit the available upload capacity consistently; no universal headroom figure is established here.
  4. Run a test stream before the real broadcast. Include representative movement and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS statistics for dropped frames or encoding lag.
  5. Start the broadcast only after the preview and stream health look acceptable. Keep an eye on status messages while it is live.

YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. For a documentary loop, check that cuts, credits, narration, and any quiet sections behave as expected—not just that the first frame appears.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks for documentary loops

Only stream material you have the rights and permissions to use, including footage, photographs, music, narration, and other embedded assets. A video being available online or labelled as a documentary does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies are separate considerations: permission to use material does not guarantee monetization eligibility, and a looped or lightly altered compilation may still raise policy issues. Review YouTube’s current policies and the terms that apply to your channel and content before scheduling a long-running stream.

Keep records of licenses or permissions and check whether they cover live rebroadcast, territories, and monetization. If a rights holder or YouTube restricts the material, stop the stream and resolve the issue rather than repeatedly restarting it.

Troubleshooting a 4K60 loop

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports poor health Upload capacity or stability is insufficient for the selected bitrate Measure upload speed during representative conditions, lower the bitrate or output quality, and test again. YouTube’s published 4K60 recommendations are 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for AV1/HEVC; confirm its current table before changing settings.
OBS reports encoding lag or the computer becomes heavily loaded The selected software or hardware encoder cannot sustain the output Try a supported hardware encoder if available, verify drivers and codec support, or reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Do not assume a specific GPU will work without checking its Linux support.
The video ends instead of restarting Loop is not enabled on the Media Source Open the source properties and enable Loop, then test through the file’s ending.
A playlist does not load or loop VLC is missing, its architecture does not match OBS, or playlist looping is not enabled Install matching VLC, reopen OBS, and check the VLC source’s file list and Loop Playlist behavior.
YouTube does not accept the stream or reports an ingest problem Codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, stream key, or other output settings do not match current ingest guidance Compare the OBS output against YouTube’s current encoder-settings page, confirm the key in Settings → Stream, and test again.
The stream looks soft or has visible compression The chosen bitrate is low for the content, or the encoder is not producing the expected quality Check output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and encoder preset. Fast motion and detailed footage can be demanding; adjust settings only within the connection and encoder capacity you have verified.
