Only if you treat the backup as sensitive. OBS profile exports are JSON files and profiles save stream settings, but OBS’s documentation does not confirm that every export includes a readable YouTube stream key or explain whether exports encrypt or remove it. YouTube describes a stream key as like a password and address, so inspect the specific backup and protect it as confidential if it contains the key.
What an OBS profile backup may contain
OBS Project says you can export the current profile’s settings to a JSON file for backup or use on another OBS installation. Its Profiles documentation, dated January 14, 2022, lists Stream settings (including Connected Account), Video, and Output among profile settings. Profiles do not store scenes; scenes are kept in Scene Collections. OBS Project’s Profiles documentation does not specifically say whether every exported JSON includes a readable stream key, or whether export encrypts or redacts credentials.
That distinction matters: the fact that a profile saves Stream settings is not proof that every backup contains a usable key. Nor does the available documentation establish that a particular export is protected. Check the actual file rather than assuming either that the key is there or that it is absent.
Why a stream key should be handled like a credential
YouTube says stream keys tell an encoder where to send a feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Its Help documentation describes them as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” YouTube’s setup instructions direct you to copy the key from YouTube and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key setting. If an exported backup contains a usable key, someone who obtains that copy may be able to use the credential to send a feed. That is a cautious security inference from YouTube’s description; the cited sources do not establish that every OBS export contains the key or that a key in a specific export will work.
How to protect a profile backup
- Inspect the export you actually made. Export the profile and examine that JSON if you need to determine whether it contains a key. Do this locally and avoid pasting the file into a public forum or an untrusted online viewer.
- Restrict access if the key is present. Keep the file somewhere access-controlled. Avoid public sharing, open support attachments, and broadly accessible or unprotected cloud folders. Use encrypted storage and encrypted transfer where available. The cited OBS documentation does not say that profile exports are encrypted automatically.
- Keep separate copies in mind. An encrypted USB drive can be an optional offline location, but encryption protects only that copy; other copies, such as an email attachment or cloud duplicate, still need protection.
- If you want a key-free backup, verify the method. Use only a workflow you have confirmed omits the credential, then plan to enter the key again when restoring OBS. The cited documentation does not establish a guaranteed OBS export option that excludes the key.
- Do not mistake public stream details for the key. A stream URL or profile name is not the credential-like value YouTube tells the encoder to use.
If the backup may have been exposed
If you think someone may have obtained a backup containing a usable key, reset the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the newly generated key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset it. Consult YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings for the current steps. Resetting addresses the potentially exposed credential; it does not remove copies of the old backup from places where you shared or stored it.
