Create your overlay in Canva, then export a static design as a transparent PNG or an animated design as an MP4 and add it to a scene in your streaming software. Canva recommends a 1920 × 1080 px canvas for Twitch overlays; that is Canva’s guidance, not a Twitch requirement.
1. Start with a Twitch overlay design

Open Canva and search for a Twitch overlay template, or start with a blank design. Canva’s template catalog includes gameplay, webcam, and intermission styles.

Choose a starting point that fits the kind of stream and its visual identity. A template is a foundation you can customize, not a requirement to keep every element as supplied.
Canva’s Twitch overlay maker describes this design and export workflow. Its Twitch overlay templates page lets you browse available styles; inventory may change.

2. Plan what viewers need to see
Before adding graphics, decide what information belongs on screen and where it should sit. Canva suggests elements such as channel branding, a webcam frame, social handles, chat, recent donors, or subscriber goals. Include only what serves the stream.

Protect the main content. Keep gameplay, the speaker, or other important video areas visible rather than covering them with borders or panels.

Prioritize readability. Text and labels should remain clear at the size viewers are likely to see them. Avoid crowding small details together.

Keep the design coherent. Use a consistent set of colors, typography, and graphic styles that fits the channel.

Choose a layout for the moment. Gameplay, webcam, and intermission scenes may need different overlay arrangements.
3. Customize the layout in Canva
Use Canva’s frames, text, images, icons, shapes, illustrations, and other graphics to adapt the template or build your own arrangement. Place webcam or channel information only where it will not obscure the stream’s essential content.

Compare designs by the amount of screen space they cover, their readability at the intended viewing size, and how well their colors and typography fit the channel. These are practical selection criteria, not performance measurements.
4. Decide whether animation helps
Canva provides animation for text and graphics and recommends MP4 for animated overlays. Use motion selectively: it should support the design rather than distract from the stream or make important information harder to follow. A static design is appropriate when movement adds no clear benefit.
5. Set the canvas size and export
Canva recommends a 1920 × 1080 px canvas for Twitch overlays. This is Canva’s recommendation; the cited guidance does not establish it as a Twitch platform rule.

6. Add the exported overlay to your streaming scene
Canva describes the handoff at a high level: create a scene in broadcasting software such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs, add the overlay file as a source, and arrange it to suit the layout. The Canva guidance does not establish current, version-specific menu names or detailed steps for either program, so consult the software’s own current instructions for those controls.
