SRT is usually the better starting point for sending live video across an unpredictable network because it is designed to recover from packet loss and adapt to changing network conditions, and it supports AES encryption. RTMP is often the better choice when the platform or established workflow requires RTMP ingest. Neither protocol is universally better: first check that both the sending and receiving endpoints support your choice, then weigh network conditions, latency, security, and codec requirements.
How SRT and RTMP differ
SRT: transport built for variable networks
Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) is an open-source video transport technology intended to deliver video over unpredictable IP networks. Its documented capabilities include adapting to jitter and bandwidth fluctuations, retransmitting lost packets, and AES encryption. Those mechanisms can make SRT a useful choice for contribution feeds traveling over a variable public connection. See the Haivision SRT 1.5.3 documentation and the SRT Alliance FAQ for capability details.
RTMP: a mature option when ingest expects it
Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) remains in live-streaming use. Haivision’s comparison, published February 8, 2022, describes RTMP as TCP-based, with retransmission and adjustable buffers. That comparison is useful background, but implementation and codec claims in it are date-specific; confirm the current support of your encoder and destination rather than treating the article as a universal compatibility rule. Read Haivision’s RTMP/SRT comparison.
Choose based on your workflow
| Your situation | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Sending contribution video over a variable public network | SRT | Both endpoints support SRT; the receiver’s latency buffer allows time for recovery; and the firewall and network permit the connection. |
| The platform or production workflow specifies RTMP ingest | RTMP | Check the destination’s current ingest requirements, including protocol, codec, and stream configuration. A protocol’s theoretical advantages cannot override an endpoint requirement. |
| Protected contribution transport is a priority | SRT is a documented option | SRT supports AES encryption, but confirm encryption is configured at both ends. This does not mean every RTMP deployment is unencrypted. |
| You need a particular latency | Test the complete workflow | Measure encoding, transport buffering, receiver processing, and playback together. There is no universal SRT-versus-RTMP latency figure established here. |
| You need HEVC or another specific codec | Verify the current implementation at both endpoints | Haivision’s 2022 comparison described RTMP’s HEVC support in its then-current context. Do not assume that statement applies to every current extension or implementation. |
What recovery means for latency
SRT’s packet-loss recovery is not a promise of zero delay or uninterrupted viewing. A receiver needs time to request and receive missing data; its latency buffer must leave room for that recovery. A smaller buffer may reduce delay but leave less time to recover under loss or jitter. The usable setting depends on the network, encoder, receiver, and delay target, so test with realistic conditions rather than selecting a buffer from the protocol name alone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
End-to-end latency also includes video encoding, transport, receiver processing, and playback. A low-latency transport setting by itself does not establish the delay a viewer will experience. The available comparison does not provide a verified universal benchmark for either protocol.
Check compatibility before changing protocols
- Identify the destination’s ingest requirement. Check its current documentation or configuration screen for accepted protocol, address, port, codec, and stream settings.
- Confirm sender and receiver support the same protocol. A sender configured for SRT cannot deliver to an endpoint that accepts only RTMP, and vice versa, unless a compatible relay or conversion step is part of the workflow.
- Check network access. For SRT, confirm the required connection mode, address, port, and firewall rules with the receiving endpoint. OBS documents SRT URLs in the form
srt://IP:port; that demonstrates a software setup path, not universal destination support. See the OBS Project SRT guide. - Match the encoder and stream configuration. Verify the codec and other stream settings against the receiver’s current specifications. Do not rely on a protocol label to guarantee codec compatibility.
- Test under representative network conditions. Check for packet loss, interruptions, and actual end-to-end delay. Adjust recovery and latency settings together, then repeat the test.
Can you use SRT without dedicated hardware?
Yes. OBS Studio documents an SRT software workflow using an SRT URL and MPEG-TS protocols supported through FFmpeg. This means dedicated SRT hardware is not inherently required to set up a software-based SRT path. It does not mean every platform accepts SRT: the receiving endpoint still has to support it. The OBS SRT guide covers the documented software route.

Common problems and fixes
- The connection will not establish: Confirm both endpoints are configured for the same protocol and check the address, port, connection mode, and firewall rules. For SRT, verify that the receiver is actually listening for the incoming connection.
- Video stutters or drops during network changes: Check network stability and whether the receiver has enough latency buffer for packet recovery. Test a suitable buffer under realistic conditions; do not assume recovery can happen with no added delay.
- There is more delay than expected: Inspect the whole chain—encoder, transport buffer, receiver processing, and playback. Changing protocol alone may not address the source of end-to-end delay.
- The receiver rejects the stream or shows no video: Recheck the destination’s current protocol, codec, and stream configuration requirements. Protocol support does not guarantee that every codec or configuration is accepted.
- Encryption is expected but not confirmed: Check that AES encryption is enabled and configured consistently at both endpoints. SRT capability alone does not prove encryption is active in a particular deployment.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream—not a live contribution feed—StreamNeo is a different kind of tool from SRT or RTMP: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not camera-based live broadcasting.
