RTMP is a protocol that carries timed audio, video, and data messages from an encoder to a streaming service over a reliable connection such as TCP. It is not the encoder and does not determine how the video is encoded. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL; for YouTube, it is the encrypted RTMP option and uses a server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
What is RTMP streaming?
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. Adobe’s protocol memo describes it as a “bidirectional message multiplex service over a reliable stream transport,” intended to carry parallel video, audio, and data messages with timing information between communicating peers. In a live workflow, the encoder sends the stream to an ingest server, which receives it for the platform to process and distribute.
The distinction matters: an encoder—software or hardware—produces and sends the media stream. RTMP is one protocol for transporting that stream. It does not perform the encoding or prescribe the media codec.
How RTMP carries a stream
RTMP divides messages into chunks and interleaves chunks from different message streams over the connection. Timing and message information allow the receiving end to reassemble the messages. Timestamps are expressed in milliseconds relative to an epoch agreed by the endpoints. The protocol outline also includes a handshake, control messages, and commands used to connect, create a stream, and publish or play it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In simplified terms, the encoder connects to the ingest server, the two sides establish a session, and the encoder publishes timestamped audio and video messages. The destination service interprets the media payload; RTMP itself does not choose its codec.
What is the difference between RTMP and RTMPS?
RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection. YouTube describes it as “a secure extension to RTMP”; its help page says it “provides encryption.” That protects the stream in transit between the encoder and ingest endpoint. It does not mean the video is encrypted for every later stage of delivery, nor does it replace the platform’s account, stream-key, or content rules.

| YouTube ingest option | Encrypted | Video codecs listed | YouTube’s stated fit and tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | No | H.264 | Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. |
| RTMPS | Yes | H.264 | Same listed latency suitability as RTMP, with encrypted transport. |
| HLS | Yes | H.264, H.265/HEVC | Supports HDR and HEVC and can suit 4K workflows; not suitable for ultra-low latency. |
| DASH | Yes | H.264, VP9 | Supports VP9 and can suit 4K workflows; not suitable for ultra-low latency. |
YouTube says HLS and DASH can provide better compression than H.264, allowing higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. It also says these HTTP-based protocols generally have greater latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. These are YouTube’s stated tradeoffs, not universal performance guarantees.
Which ingest option should you choose?
- Choose RTMPS if you want an encrypted connection and your workflow needs an RTMP option; YouTube lists it for normal, low, and ultra-low latency.
- Consider HLS if its HEVC or HDR support matters to your workflow and you can accept that YouTube does not position it for ultra-low latency.
- Consider DASH if VP9 support is relevant and the higher-latency tradeoff is acceptable.
- Check the encoder first: support for the destination’s chosen protocol is essential. The YouTube guidance does not make a dedicated hardware encoder necessary; compatible encoding software may also be used.
How do I get my YouTube RTMP stream URL and stream key?
YouTube’s setup guidance calls for an encoder that supports RTMPS, plus the correct RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Labels and available controls can change, so use the current values shown for your own stream rather than copying credentials from an example.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select or create the live stream you intend to send.
- Find the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. If the URL displayed is ordinary RTMP, verify whether Live Control Room offers the RTMPS URL; the protocol in the URL must be
rtmpsfor an RTMPS connection. - Open your encoder’s YouTube or custom-server settings. Select RTMPS or enter the RTMPS server URL, then paste the stream key into the key field. Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS rather than assuming that an RTMP option includes it.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room for the incoming stream before starting the public broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current prompts for previewing and going live.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it in a public example. If it is exposed, replace or reset it using the controls available in Live Control Room.

- SSL or TLS connection error: Check that the server URL begins with
rtmps, that it is the correct YouTube URL, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends trying port443if the SSL error persists. - Connection timeout: Verify the server URL and confirm RTMPS support in the encoder. A setting that only sends ordinary RTMP will not establish the requested RTMPS connection.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Compare the URL and stream key in the encoder with the values for the selected stream in Live Control Room. Check for whitespace or a key copied from another stream.
- The video does not appear as expected: Remember that the protocol carries media; it does not encode it. Check that the encoder’s output format is compatible with the destination’s current ingest guidance. YouTube’s comparison lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
RTMP or RTMPS does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material being sent. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights and permissions for the content. YouTube’s policies and enforcement apply regardless of ingest protocol; check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream guidance for the rules that apply to your channel and material.
