RTMP vs. HLS: Which Streaming Protocol Should You Use?

RTMP commonly carries a live feed into a streaming service; HLS commonly delivers video to viewers over HTTP and CDNs. They can work together in one streaming pipeline.

RTMP and HLS usually do different jobs: RTMP is commonly used to send a live feed to a streaming service, while HLS is designed to deliver live or on-demand video to viewers over HTTP, often through web servers and CDNs. They are not necessarily alternatives. A platform can ingest a contribution feed using one protocol, then package and deliver it to viewers using another.

Start with the stage of your streaming workflow

Before choosing a protocol, decide whether you are connecting an encoder or production system to a streaming platform, or delivering playback to an audience. The destination’s ingest requirements determine how to send the feed; the player, audience devices, latency target and delivery infrastructure shape playback.

  • Contribution or ingest: the route from your encoder or upstream system into a streaming service. RTMP is a common ingest option, but support and security requirements vary by destination.
  • Viewer delivery: the route from a streaming service to audience players. HLS is an HTTP-based delivery format designed to work with ordinary web servers and CDNs.

These roles can coexist in one pipeline. AWS Elemental MediaLive, for example, documents RTMP push and pull inputs as well as HLS pull inputs; that is an example of one service’s options, not a universal compatibility rule. AWS MediaLive’s supported input protocols

RTMP vs. HLS at a glance

Decision RTMP HLS
Common workflow role Ingest or contribution; AWS MediaLive documents push and pull inputs. HTTP-based viewer delivery; AWS MediaLive also documents HLS pull input.
Typical delivery infrastructure Depends on the receiving platform and the rest of the workflow. Ordinary web servers and CDNs; HLS can adapt playback to network conditions.
Latency No universal RTMP delay is established by the cited documentation. Standard and Low-Latency HLS implementations differ; end-to-end delay depends on production, delivery and player behavior.
Compatibility Confirm that the destination accepts the intended RTMP ingest mode and transport. Confirm that the target platform and player support the required HLS features; Apple documents HLS support for its platforms, but these sources do not provide a complete cross-device matrix.

For broader playback distribution where CDN delivery and adaptation to changing bandwidth matter, HLS is a strong fit when the platform and players support the workflow. Apple describes HLS as serving live and on-demand media over HTTP, with alternate streams at different bit rates that can switch as available bandwidth changes. Apple’s HLS overview

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to use RTMP for ingest

Choose RTMP for sending a contribution feed only when the service receiving it supports the required RTMP mode and transport. Check its current documentation for whether it expects a push from your encoder or pulls from an upstream source, and whether secure transport is available and required. A protocol name alone does not establish that two endpoints can connect.

AWS MediaLive is one documented example: its input table lists RTMP push and pull, as well as HLS pull over HTTP or HTTPS. Its RTMP secure-transport limitations apply to that AWS service; do not assume they apply to every provider. AWS MediaLive input protocol details

When HLS is the right choice for playback

HLS is built for delivering live or on-demand audio and video over HTTP. Its use of alternate bit-rate streams lets a compatible player adjust playback to available network speed, while web servers and CDNs provide a familiar distribution path. Apple’s HLS deployment guidance describes fragmented MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 transport stream media; for the basic setup described there, Apple recommends fragmented MPEG-4. That recommendation is specific to Apple’s guidance and setup. Apple’s HLS deployment documentation

Do not infer universal playback support from the protocol label. Name the actual audience devices, platform and player, then verify their supported HLS features. The Apple documentation establishes HLS support in Apple’s ecosystem and describes HTTP/CDN delivery, but it is not a complete, current compatibility matrix for every browser, television or streaming service.

Latency: compare implementations, not just protocol names

These sources do not establish a universal RTMP-versus-HLS delay figure. Actual end-to-end delay depends on how the feed is produced, packaged, delivered and played, including the settings and capabilities of the service, CDN and player. If delay is important, measure the complete workflow under the conditions your audience will use.

What Low-Latency HLS changes

Apple’s Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) adds mechanisms including partial media segments, playlist updates, blocking playlist reload, preload hints and rendition reports. The production and delivery back end must implement the corresponding rules; adding an LL-HLS label without compatible components does not establish low end-to-end delay. Apple’s current HLS authoring specification recommends a one-second part target. This is server configuration guidance, not a promise of one-second viewer latency: Apple says the target must be at least the expected client P95 round-trip time and recommends at least three times that RTT. The resulting viewer delay still depends on the complete implementation. Apple’s HLS authoring specification

A practical protocol decision

  1. If you are connecting an encoder or upstream system: check the destination’s current ingest documentation. Confirm supported protocols, push or pull mode, endpoint details and security requirements before configuring the encoder.
  2. If you are selecting audience playback: check the platform’s packaging and delivery options, the CDN or origin path, and support in the actual players and devices your audience uses.
  3. If low delay matters: verify support across the producer, packager, CDN or cache and player. Measure end-to-end delay in that workflow instead of relying on a general protocol comparison.
  4. If the workflow permits: use the ingest protocol accepted by the service and package the output for the audience’s playback needs. Ingest and delivery do not have to use the same protocol.
