Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo stop a live stream dropping frames, measure your upload speed, then set your encoder bitrate below the connection’s stable upload capacity and leave room for other network use. If the connection itself is unstable, changing the bitrate may help, but the lasting fix may involve Wi-Fi, competing traffic, your router, ISP, or the route to the streaming platform.
What “increase upload speed” means for a live stream
Download speed is how quickly data reaches you; upload speed is how quickly your stream reaches the platform. Streaming needs sustained outbound capacity, not just a high peak in a speed-test result. The stream’s total bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth actually available to it. YouTube advises leaving 20% headroom and accounting for both primary and backup stream bitrates when applicable (YouTube streaming tips).
A speed test measures a connection at one moment and may use a different route from your streaming platform. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, September 30, 2024). So the practical goal is stable upload performance with enough spare capacity—not simply a bigger number on a test.
Diagnose the bottleneck before changing equipment
- Measure upload, not download. Run a speed test while the connection is otherwise quiet. Record the upload result, time, and whether other people or devices were active. Repeat at the time you normally stream; shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.
- Check what happens during a test stream. In OBS, watch the connection and dropped-frame statistics while streaming privately or unlisted. Include the kind of motion and audio you expect in the real stream, and check the platform’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health (YouTube streaming tips).
- Compare the encoder bitrate with sustained upload. Do not set bitrate equal to the best speed-test peak. Use a margin for fluctuations and household or office traffic. Published guidance differs by platform, so treat the figures below as starting points, not a guarantee.
Choose a bitrate that fits your connection
Lowering the encoder bitrate is usually the fastest configuration change to try. OBS Project suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed; YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; Twitch’s general guidance is upload speed equal to stream bitrate plus 30%. These are separate operator recommendations, not a universal formula (OBS Project; YouTube Help; Twitch Help).

| Guidance | Figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Project, 2024 | 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate | A troubleshooting starting point, not a promise that the stream will be stable. |
| YouTube Help; publication date not shown | 20% upload bandwidth headroom | Keep the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth; include a backup stream if you use one. |
| Twitch Help; publication date not shown | Upload speed equal to bitrate plus 30%; its example pairs a 6 Mbps stream with at least 8 Mbps upload | General practice cited by Twitch, not a requirement for every service or connection. |
For YouTube, the recommended bitrate also depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are YouTube’s published figures, not universal minimum ISP plan speeds (YouTube encoder settings).
| Video mode | H.264 recommendation | AV1 or H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use the column for your actual codec; H.264 values should not be applied automatically to AV1 or H.265. If reducing bitrate makes the picture too soft, try a lower resolution or frame rate and check the platform’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Keyframe frequency is an encoder setting, not a way to increase raw upload capacity (YouTube encoder settings).

Improve stability on your local network
Prefer Ethernet when Wi-Fi is the weak link
OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming (OBS Project, September 30, 2024). Ethernet can reduce problems caused by a weak or inconsistent Wi-Fi link, but it cannot raise the upload capacity provided by your ISP. If you need to use Wi-Fi, testing nearer the router and reducing competing wireless use can help identify a local wireless issue; neither step guarantees a particular speed increase.
Stop competing uploads
Pause cloud backups, file uploads, and other tasks using the uplink. Ask other people on the network to avoid heavy uploads during the stream. A connection shared across devices may not have its full measured upload capacity available to the streaming computer.

Check the hardware and network software
If a wired connection still drops frames, check that the Ethernet cable and network equipment work reliably. OBS lists faulty cables and other hardware among possible causes. Its troubleshooting guidance also suggests checking VPNs, security or network-optimization software, updating network drivers, and restarting the modem or router. A replacement cable or router is relevant only if the existing equipment is part of the problem; neither can bypass an ISP-side capacity limit (OBS Project).
If the stream still drops frames
- Try a lower bitrate first. Retest and watch the encoder and platform statistics. If that stabilizes the connection but harms image quality, adjust resolution or frame rate to a suitable lower mode.
- Try another ingest server, if available. This can help isolate a route- or server-specific issue. A different server is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
- Compare with a short test on another service. If one destination works and another does not under similar conditions, the problem may be specific to a route or service rather than the local upload link.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve it. Share the times of the drops, speed-test upload results, whether the connection was wired, and the encoder bitrate. Ask about sustained upload performance and service issues affecting your route.
OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce dropped frames by lowering bitrate when congestion occurs. It is a fallback: the stream may lose image quality, and dynamic bitrate does not fix the underlying network congestion or instability (OBS Project).
