A video encoder compresses video into a stream a platform can receive. If you stream from a computer, software such as OBS can do that job using your CPU or a supported GPU’s hardware encoder; you do not automatically need to buy a separate encoder box. The right setup depends on your video sources, computer workload, streaming destination, and production workflow.
What a video encoder does
Video from a camera, game, screen, or other source must be prepared in a format a streaming platform can ingest. An encoder compresses the video and applies settings such as resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Streaming software may also combine sources and scenes before sending the encoded output.
- Encoder: The software or hardware that compresses the video.
- Codec: The format used to encode the video, such as H.264.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: A separate appliance in the signal chain, rather than encoding software or an encoding component already inside a computer.
In a typical computer setup, OBS handles the stream workflow and can encode in software or use a compatible GPU encoder. Its setup guide covers choosing a service, entering a stream key, and configuring output settings: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Do you need to buy a separate encoder?
Usually not if you are streaming from a computer. First check which encoders are available in your streaming software and whether your computer can handle the video settings and scenes you intend to use. OBS includes the x264 software encoder and supports hardware encoding on compatible GPUs. A dedicated appliance may fit a specific production workflow, but it is not a universal requirement for streaming.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Consider additional equipment only when it solves a concrete limitation—for example, a workflow involving external video sources, portability, or a production setup that your existing computer and software cannot support. The useful question is not “Do streamers need an encoder?” but “Can my current setup encode these sources at the quality and reliability I need?”
Software encoding versus GPU hardware encoding
With software encoding, the CPU performs the compression. With hardware encoding, a specialized component in a supported GPU takes on that work, which can reduce CPU load. OBS says modern hardware encoders can deliver good quality with minimal performance impact, but results depend on encoder generation and settings; earlier-generation hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.

| Option | What it uses | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoding | CPU | Can be a good fit if the processor has enough capacity for the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene workload. |
| GPU hardware encoding | A supported GPU’s specialized encoding component | Can offload encoding from the CPU, but quality and compatibility vary with hardware generation, software, operating system, and destination. |
| Dedicated encoder appliance | A separate device in the production signal chain | May suit a particular external-source or standalone workflow. Do not buy one without identifying a need it addresses. |
Neither encoding option makes the rest of the workflow cost-free: scenes, filters, browser sources, and games can still use significant system resources. OBS cautions that system requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that meeting compatible system requirements alone does not guarantee a particular computer can stream successfully. Its system requirements guidance points to the Auto Configuration Wizard as a way to find starting settings for your system.
Choose settings for the streaming platform
There is no single best codec or bitrate for every platform. For YouTube live ingest, its current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Check the destination’s current requirements before configuring a stream.

YouTube settings to check
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and specifies a maximum of four seconds.
- Bitrate: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 1080p at 60 fps, its guidance lists 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal values for other services.
- Connection: Choose a quality your available upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and testing before going live.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so you do not have to send a separate stream for every playback resolution. For local recording, priorities may differ: OBS describes H.264 as broadly compatible and its default codec, while HEVC and AV1 support varies, and real-time software encoding with AV1 may require a high-end CPU. A recording format is not automatically the best choice for live streaming; verify platform acceptance and hardware support. See the OBS audio and video formats guide.
Set up and test before going live
- Choose your destination and encoder. In OBS, select the streaming service or server, then choose a software or supported hardware encoder in output settings. Follow the platform’s current ingest requirements.
- Enter the stream key securely. Use the key provided by your streaming platform in your software’s stream settings. Treat it like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not include it in a public recording or screenshot.
- Set resolution and frame rate. Match the intended output to your content and the computer’s capacity. Higher resolution and frame rate raise the workload and usually require more upload bandwidth.
- Set bitrate and keyframe interval for the platform. For YouTube, use its current codec-specific recommendations, CBR, and the two-second keyframe interval guidance described above; do not assume these values apply to another service.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and motion similar to the actual stream. Monitor the platform’s stream health and your computer’s performance before relying on the setup for an event. OBS’s overview guide also recommends testing scenes and settings before a first live stream.
Troubleshoot an overloaded or choppy stream
Performance problems do not automatically mean you need to purchase an encoder. The bottleneck may be CPU or GPU load, an overly demanding resolution or frame rate, or complex scenes. OBS identifies GPU overload and other system bottlenecks as possible causes in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Encoder overload or choppy output: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test again. If 60 fps is not stable, try 30 fps.
- GPU overload: Check whether a game, scene, filters, or browser sources are competing for GPU resources. Simplify the scene or reduce the game’s graphics load, then reassess.
- Stream health warnings: Check the platform’s stream-health information and confirm your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. Test with representative audio and motion rather than judging only from a static scene.
- Hardware encoder unavailable or incompatible: Check software, operating-system, GPU, codec, and destination support. Use an available compatible encoder rather than assuming every system exposes the same options.
- Still struggling after adjustments: Reassess the entire production workload and the available hardware. OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard can help establish starting settings, but a test with your actual scenes is still important.
Or let it run in the cloud
