Choose a live streaming API by the experience you need to build, not by a vendor’s headline latency number. For one-way viewing, a managed broadcast workflow using HLS may be enough; for faster audience interaction, compare low-latency HLS; for people speaking or appearing together, evaluate WebRTC or another real-time system. Then test the complete ingest-to-playback path and model cost against your actual workload.
Start with what viewers need to do
The crucial early decision is whether viewers mainly watch, interact with a delay, or participate in a two-way session. These are different media workflows, and an API built for broadcast should not be assumed to handle real-time conversation well.
One-way broadcast
For a concert, documentary premiere, or business announcement where viewers watch and do not need to affect what happens on screen, standard HLS can be a sensible starting point. It favors broad playback compatibility over immediate response, so a noticeable delay may be acceptable.
Mux describes standard HLS latency as 20+ seconds on its live product page and typically about 25–30 seconds in its FAQ. Those are Mux’s descriptions of its service, not universal guarantees for HLS or results from a head-to-head test.

Interactive broadcast
If viewers bid, answer polls, react, or take part in a synchronized activity, decide how quickly the video must reflect the event. Low-latency HLS can reduce the gap while retaining a broadcast-style viewing model. Amazon IVS also documents timed metadata and chat features that can support interaction around a stream.
Mux lists 4–7 seconds for LL-HLS on its product page. Its FAQ describes low-latency results as low as five seconds and notes that geography and internet connectivity affect results. Amazon IVS says its low-latency service is usually under five seconds and can be under three seconds. These figures come from different providers’ materials and conditions; they are not directly comparable measurements.
Two-way sessions
If hosts and viewers need to speak, appear on screen together, or move between audience and speaker roles, evaluate a real-time communications system, commonly based on WebRTC. LiveKit describes duplex connections, synchronized participants, chat and data messages, recording, stream imports, and RTMP multistreaming. Amazon IVS describes a Real-Time Streaming mode that can reach under 300 milliseconds end-to-end, with actual results varying.

| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Latency and interaction | What glass-to-glass delay is acceptable? Do viewers watch, react, bid, or take the stage? Which latency mode is actually included? |
| Ingest | Does your contribution workflow need RTMP or RTMPS, SRT, WebRTC or WHIP, a browser or mobile SDK, or professional contribution equipment? What happens on an unstable network? |
| Playback | Which formats and player SDKs cover your target browsers, phones, and connected devices? Is adaptive bitrate playback available? |
| Scale and geography | What are the expected peak concurrent viewers, stream count, ingest locations, and viewer countries? What failure and recovery behavior do you require? |
| Product features | Do you need recording or VOD, DVR, chat, timed metadata, moderation, private playback, authorization, analytics, or webhooks? |
| Developer fit | Check API ergonomics, web/iOS/Android SDK coverage and framework fit, documentation, sample apps, deployment model, and your team’s existing cloud skills. |
| Operations and control | How much encoding, packaging, CDN, player, resilience, security, and compliance configuration should your team own? |
| Cost | Which billing units apply to input time, viewing or participant time, resolution, bitrate, delivery, regions, recording, storage, chat, and peak load? Include engineering and operations effort. |
Confirm that the broadcaster’s encoder supports the selected ingest protocol and that the playback SDKs cover the devices you intend to support. Also verify security controls for both sides of the stream: who may publish, and who may watch. Mux describes RTMP ingest, playback IDs, and token-based playback security; Amazon IVS documents private-channel playback authorization.
Use provider capabilities as archetypes, not a universal ranking
The right choice depends on the product shape and operating model. These providers illustrate different approaches; the available evidence does not establish a universal winner for quality, scale, reliability, or cost.
| Service | Where it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon IVS | AWS describes IVS as a managed service for adding low-latency or real-time video to apps and sites. Its FAQ describes low-latency and real-time modes, along with Chat and timed metadata features. | Confirm the needed mode, current feature and control-plane/API region availability, and the separate global ingest and delivery network model for your deployment. Its FAQ describes low-latency billing by video input and output duration, real-time billing by participant connection duration, and Chat billing by messages sent and delivered. |
| Mux | The workflow creates a live stream resource and key, accepts RTMP broadcast input, and returns playback identifiers. Its product page describes token-based playback controls and both standard HLS and LL-HLS. | Choose the latency mode that matches the interaction. Treat the differing latency figures on its product page and FAQ as page-specific descriptions with variability, not as one guaranteed result for every viewer. |
| LiveKit | Its WebRTC-oriented offering describes duplex connections and synchronized participants, plus chat/data messages, recording, stream imports, and RTMP multistreaming. | Confirm participant, recording, and egress needs and model the relevant billing units. Its published cost comparison is an illustrative scenario, not a general price ranking. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | Its guidance compares RTMP_PUSH and SRT_PUSH for this API workflow and recommends SRT if possible. | The chosen encoder or transcoder must support the selected protocol. Treat the service’s bitrate examples as guidance for that workflow, not a universal encoding prescription. |
Run a workload-based cost comparison
Do not compare a per-hour charge with a per-gigabyte charge until each estimate represents the same product workload. A useful model includes stream hours and input resolution, viewer hours and geography, peak concurrency, bitrate, recording and storage, chat volume, and the set of features you actually plan to use. Include implementation and ongoing operations: a lower service bill may require more engineering and infrastructure work.

LiveKit’s use-case page gives an illustrative comparison at an assumed 50 TB per month: LiveKit Cloud at $0.12/GB, Cloudflare at $1 per 1,000 minutes, and Amazon IVS at $0.075/hour, with modeled totals of $642, $600, and $750 respectively. The total-cost example assumes 720p at 1.2 Mbps using VP9. These are vendor-published figures tied to that model, not current quotes for every workload; verify live pricing and recalculate for your own inputs.

Before committing, run the same realistic event through the candidate workflows. Use the encoders, devices, network conditions, viewer regions, and interaction patterns your product expects. Record the results and the assumptions so that differences between providers are meaningful.
- Set acceptance criteria. Specify acceptable glass-to-glass delay, playback startup and interruption behavior, target devices, peak concurrent viewers, and required interactions.
- Test ingest under your real contribution conditions. Use the intended protocol and encoder. Include network instability and confirm how the workflow behaves when an encoder disconnects or must reconnect.
- Test playback across target devices and locations. Check player compatibility, adaptive quality behavior, authorization, and the viewing experience on the networks your audience uses.
- Exercise product features. Test any required recording, DVR, chat, timed metadata, moderation, analytics, webhooks, or private playback rather than assuming they work the same way across services.
- Recalculate the bill from pilot assumptions. Use the same stream duration, resolution, viewer distribution, concurrency, retention, and feature set for each estimate.
- Review operations and failure handling. Decide what your team must monitor, configure, and recover, and whether that burden matches your staffing and control requirements.
Check protocol and encoder requirements before buying equipment
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API guidance recommends SRT_PUSH if possible and notes that an encoder or transcoder must support the selected protocol; it says most professional-grade encoders do. If your workflow chooses SRT and your existing equipment does not support it, an SRT-capable hardware video encoder may be relevant. Do not buy one merely because SRT appears in a provider’s protocol list: an RTMP workflow or a direct browser/mobile SDK may not need that hardware.

For its own Live Stream API workflow, Google Cloud lists these SRT bitrate examples: 720p at 25–30 fps, H.264 at 8 Mbps; 1080p at 50–60 fps, H.264 at 20 Mbps; and 2160p at 50–60 fps, H.264 at 50 Mbps. These are Google Cloud guidance examples, not universal settings. Match encoder output to the selected service, network capacity, intended quality, and playback ladder.
When an API is not the problem you are solving
If the requirement is to keep prerecorded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than build a live video feature into your own app or site, that is a different job from choosing a streaming API. StreamNeo is a cloud service for that specific YouTube workflow; it is not an API for embedding live video into a business application and does not stream to other platforms.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
