How to Create a Transcript from a Live Stream

Live captions and saved transcripts are different. Set up live caption delivery before YouTube broadcasts, or add and edit transcript text after the recording is available.

To get a transcript from a live stream, choose whether you need captions viewers can read during the broadcast or text saved for later. For YouTube, set up a supported caption feed before going live; after the recording is available, use YouTube Studio to upload timed captions, sync a transcript to the audio, or type captions manually. Live captions and a retained transcript are separate outputs, so don’t assume the live text will be saved automatically.

Choose between live captions and a saved transcript

Live captions appear while people watch and are useful for accessibility during the broadcast. A transcript is text retained for later reading, searching, editing, or captioning a recording. Some platforms provide one without automatically retaining the other.

Before the event, decide which result you need, which languages are required, whether the audio needs human captioning, and who must be able to view or download the resulting text. The platform’s caption input and retention settings determine what is possible.

Create captions during a YouTube Live broadcast

YouTube documents two live-caption input routes: captions embedded in the video using EIA 608/CEA 708, or a supported caption feed sent over HTTP. Configure the route before the event and test it with the encoder or captioning software you plan to use. YouTube’s documented workflow currently supports one caption track, even though the underlying standard can support up to four language tracks. See YouTube’s live caption requirements for current setup details.

Use embedded 608/708 captions

  1. Create or open the YouTube Live stream in the stream setup workflow.
  2. Open Settings, then Setup, turn on Closed captions, select Embedded 608/708, and save.
  3. Configure the encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the stream. The YouTube setting alone does not generate captions; the encoder or captioning system must provide them.
  4. Check the resulting captions during a test broadcast. Verify that the spoken words appear, timing is usable, and the intended language is selected.

Use an external caption feed

  1. Enable captions in the event setup and copy the signed HTTP caption ingestion URL.
  2. Give that URL to the captioner or compatible caption software, and configure it to send captions to the event.
  3. Test the feed before the event. Each stream entry point accepts one caption feed.

YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net among supported software. Product versions and requirements can change, so confirm current compatibility with YouTube and the vendor before relying on a particular setup. For events, YouTube advises adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay; plan for the delay in your production schedule and tell viewers if it affects the event.

Add captions or transcript text to a YouTube recording

Once the stream recording is available as a video in YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video and language, then select the caption workflow that fits the text you have. You can upload a timed caption file, auto-sync a plain transcript to the recording, or enter captions manually. YouTube explains these options in Add subtitles & captions.

Upload a caption file with timings

Use this route when you already have a timed caption file. The file contains the spoken text and its timing; some formats can also include positioning and style. Choose the matching language and upload the file through the video’s Subtitles workflow. Check the timing and presentation in the player before publishing.

Auto-sync a plain transcript

Choose auto-sync when you have the spoken words as text but not caption timings. The transcript must be in the same language as the speech. YouTube cautions that auto-sync is not recommended for videos longer than one hour or with poor audio quality. If either condition applies, use timed captions or another workflow that lets you control and verify timing.

Type captions manually

Manual entry is an option when you want to create and time the text in Studio. It can be practical for a short recording or for correcting a smaller number of important errors; for a long stream, prepare the text and timings in a caption file or transcript workflow instead.

Review automatic captions and transcript text

If YouTube automatic captions are available, YouTube says they are published in the video’s default language. Treat speech recognition as a draft, not a guaranteed accurate transcript. Review names, numbers, specialist terms, fast speech, overlapping speakers, and passages obscured by noise. The available guidance does not establish a universal accuracy rate. Recognition quality can vary with speaker and subject; a third-party OBS plugin resource specifically notes that specialized vocabulary and hectic speech can reduce it.

Use captions or a transcript with Twitch

Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions describes captions embedded in streams or supplied through broadcast encoders. It also discusses an OBS closed-caption plugin that converts speech to captions. Twitch’s professional live-captioning service is described for Twitch-produced content; do not assume it is automatically available for every streamer’s broadcast.

A third-party OBS forum resource, last updated July 17, 2019, describes “Closed Captioning via Google Speech Recognition” as using Twitch’s caption support and says it can caption live streams and VODs and save captions as SRT subtitle files. Its notes warn that accuracy varies and mention language and encoder limitations. Because that is an older community resource rather than current official compatibility guidance, check the plugin’s current status and compatibility with your OBS and Twitch versions before building an event around it. See the plugin resource.

Retain a Zoom transcript separately from live captions

Zoom’s FAQ for its May 2026 captions and transcript update distinguishes live captions from retained speech-to-text data: participants cannot save or download live captions as a post-meeting asset under that workflow. If you need a transcript afterward, the host or administrator must enable meeting transcripts. Account settings govern transcript generation, retention, and who may view or download the result. Check those permissions before the meeting rather than relying on the live caption display. See Zoom’s updated FAQ.

Fix common transcript and caption problems

  • No captions appear during a YouTube stream: Check that closed captions are enabled in the event setup and that the selected input matches the actual source—embedded 608/708 or an external HTTP feed. Confirm the encoder or caption software is sending captions to the correct stream entry point.
  • The caption feed is enabled but empty: Recheck the signed ingestion URL and the caption software configuration with the captioner. A stream entry point accepts one caption feed, so check for a competing feed.
  • Only one language track is available: YouTube’s current documented live workflow supports one caption track. Do not assume the standard’s allowance of up to four tracks means YouTube accepts all four.
  • Auto-synced text is poorly timed or incomplete: Confirm it matches the spoken language and that audio is clear. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos over an hour or with poor audio; use timed captions or manually correct the result.
  • Recognition mangles names or technical vocabulary: Proofread the transcript against the recording and correct names, terms, numbers, and fast or overlapping speech. Do not treat automated output as verified text.
  • A Zoom meeting’s live captions are gone afterward: Live captions are not the retained transcript in Zoom’s updated workflow. Ask the host or administrator to enable meeting transcripts and check access permissions before the meeting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want to replay a recording as a continuous YouTube live stream, rather than create its transcript, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo does not create transcripts or captions, and it streams to YouTube only. Start the free day.
