They are container formats; the video and audio codecs inside the file, the streaming workflow, and the destination’s requirements determine whether it will play. For HLS, follow the platform’s packaging specification rather than relying on the filename extension.
What MOV and MP4 tell you—and what they don’t
MOV and MP4 describe container formats: ways of packaging video, audio, and related data. A file’s extension does not identify its video codec by itself. An MOV could contain H.264 or HEVC, for example, and an MP4 extension alone does not guarantee a particular codec or that a particular player will support the file. Apple’s HLS authoring specification treats codecs and container requirements as separate matters. Apple HLS authoring specification
- Container: the packaging format, such as MOV or MP4.
- Codec: the method used to encode video or audio, such as H.264 or HEVC.
- Delivery format: how the service presents media to viewers. HLS, for example, uses playlists and media segments rather than simply serving one ordinary downloadable video file.
Which should you choose for streaming?
Start with the destination platform’s current ingest or encoding requirements and the devices your audience will use. If it specifies a container, codec, profile, level, audio format, or resolution, meet those requirements and test the resulting stream on the actual target clients. If a service accepts uploads and transcodes them, its accepted-input list and conversion behavior matter more than a general preference for MOV or MP4.
| Situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The platform specifies an ingest format | Use the container, codecs, and settings it specifies | A file extension alone cannot establish compatibility. |
| You are authoring HLS for Apple devices | Package the selected codec according to Apple’s HLS rules | Apple specifies fragmented MP4 for HEVC, and fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport streams for H.264 video. Apple’s specification |
| A hosting service accepts uploads and transcodes | Check that service’s accepted inputs and output workflow | For example, Cloudflare says Stream accepts MOV uploads and encodes them to H.264 for HLS and MPEG-DASH delivery. This describes Cloudflare’s service, not a guarantee about other hosts. Cloudflare’s format overview |
| You need an editable source as well as a streaming deliverable | Keep the source asset and create a separate delivery encode if required | The best editing master and the best delivery file need not be the same asset; follow the editor and destination requirements. |
For HLS, a file extension is not a streaming package
HLS delivery involves playlists and media segments served over HTTP, with a client retrieving and reassembling the media for playback. An ordinary MP4 download is therefore not interchangeable with an HLS stream simply because both may use an MP4-family container. Apple’s HLS materials describe the playlists, segments, server or CDN, and playback client involved. Apple’s basic HLS deployment guide and HLS overview

Apple’s authoring specification lists these content types for relevant HLS components: application/vnd.apple.mpegurl for playlists, video/mp4 for fragmented MP4, video/iso.segment for .m4s segments, and video/mp2t for MPEG transport stream. These labels belong to a correctly configured delivery workflow; changing a file’s extension does not create playlists or segments. Apple HLS authoring specification
Do not convert by renaming
Renaming video.mov to video.mp4 changes the filename, not the media inside it. It does not transcode the codecs, change the container structure, or package the file as HLS. Use an export or encoding workflow that produces the destination’s required format, then validate playback.

Mac users should note that Apple’s QuickTime Player export guide says the app exports QuickTime .mov using H.264 or HEVC and does not export MP4 videos. Output resolution and data rate depend on the source. If a destination specifically requires MP4, use a workflow that actually exports or encodes MP4 rather than changing the extension. A compatibility check before publishing
- Identify the destination and playback devices. Find the current ingest requirements for the platform and the relevant player or device.
- Check the whole specification. Confirm container, video codec and profile, audio codec, resolution, and any packaging requirements—not just the extension.
- Determine whether the service transcodes. If it accepts a source upload and converts it, confirm that your input is accepted and what output it creates.
- Keep source and delivery assets distinct when useful. Retain an editing-oriented master and make a delivery encode that fits the destination where the workflow calls for it.
- Test the actual output. Play the encoded stream on intended clients and check that audio, video, and continuous playback work. A valid-looking filename is not a compatibility test.
Stream uploaded videos to YouTube without leaving a computer on
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than to choose a format for a conventional HLS host, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-looping option. It keeps uploaded videos or playlists running on YouTube; it does not convert the general MOV-versus-MP4 decision into a universal compatibility rule. Check that your intended file works with the upload workflow before relying on it.
