Recommended Free Tools
For the simplest way to bring remote guests into a live show, StreamYard is the more direct choice: guests join a browser-based studio through a link, while OBS is a free, open-source production tool that needs a separate guest connection such as VDO.Ninja. Choose OBS when you want deeper control over scenes, sources, and audio and are comfortable configuring that bridge. These are workflow differences described by the products, not results from a controlled head-to-head test.
Which should you choose?
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Low-friction guest entry for a nontechnical contributor | StreamYard | The host sends a studio link; the guest grants camera and microphone access, selects devices, and waits backstage until the host brings them on screen. |
| Detailed control of production elements | OBS | OBS builds scenes from sources such as webcams, browser windows, images, text, and capture cards, and includes transitions, audio filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and plugins or scripts. |
| OBS production with remote contributors | OBS plus a guest bridge such as VDO.Ninja | VDO.Ninja can feed guest audio and video into OBS, but you must configure and manage the separate components. |
| Browser-based guest management plus downstream OBS production | A hybrid workflow | Teams can combine browser-based guest onboarding with OBS production when they need both approaches; the added connection steps increase complexity. |
Neither product is established as universally more reliable, faster to set up, or better in video quality. The available product documentation describes capabilities and workflows, not comparative test results.
How StreamYard handles remote guests
Guest onboarding
The host shares a link to the studio. A guest opens it on a laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone, grants browser permission to use those devices, selects the right inputs, enters a display name, and waits backstage. The host decides when to add the guest on screen. StreamYard’s guest guidance recommends a recent supported browser and a strong internet connection; a phone or tablet can also work, subject to the platform’s browser or app guidance.
Ask guests to use headphones or earbuds if possible: StreamYard recommends them to help prevent audio echo. Before going live, have each guest check that the intended microphone and camera are selected and that they can hear the on-stage conversation.

Backstage and on-screen capacity
Backstage guests can see and hear the on-stage activity without appearing in the broadcast. The host can bring them on screen or cycle in additional backstage participants. The StreamYard Help Center lists these capacities; plan names and limits can change, so check the current plan details before choosing a tier.
| Plan listed by StreamYard | Backstage participants | On-screen participants |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 6 | 6 |
| Core | 10 | 10 |
| Advanced | 15 | 10 |
| Business | 15 | 10 |
Guest destinations and recordings
On paid plans, Guest Destinations lets guests add destinations of their own: up to two per guest and six guest destinations total per broadcast. It applies to livestreams, not recording-only sessions, and guests must sign in to a StreamYard account to connect their destinations.

StreamYard’s paid-features information also lists features such as simultaneous streaming, HD broadcast recordings up to ten hours per stream, up to ten on-screen participants, and separate local audio and video recordings for on-screen participants. Availability depends on plan; verify the current plan mapping rather than assuming a feature is included in a particular tier.
What OBS does—and what it does not do by itself
OBS is production software, not a guest-calling service
OBS is free, open-source software for video recording and live streaming. It lets you compose scenes using sources such as webcams, browser windows, images, text, and capture cards. It also supports custom transitions, per-source audio filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and plugins or scripts. This gives a producer considerable control, but OBS alone does not provide the same managed guest-link workflow described by StreamYard.

OBS Browser Source embeds a web page or local file in a scene and can support custom layout, image, video, and audio tasks. It is a production component, not by itself a remote guest connection. The OBS Browser Source documentation cited here is dated January 11, 2022; check current OBS documentation if a specific browser-source behavior is central to your setup.
Is OBS good remote guest software by itself?
No—not as a complete guest-onboarding system. OBS is useful for producing the show, but remote participants need a separate call or contribution path. A common documented approach is VDO.Ninja, which brings browser-based remote guest audio and video feeds into OBS or other browser-enabled production software. That flexibility comes with more pieces to connect and troubleshoot than a guest joining one hosted studio.

How to add a remote guest to OBS using VDO.Ninja
VDO.Ninja documents a browser-based route for sending remote contributors’ audio and video to OBS. Exact interface labels can change, so follow the current VDO.Ninja instructions for the guest-link and OBS-link options you select.
- Prepare the OBS show. Create the scene where the guest should appear. Decide whether you need a single guest view or separate sources for a more customized layout.
- Create a guest connection in VDO.Ninja. Use VDO.Ninja’s current workflow to generate an invite for the remote guest and the corresponding feed or production link for OBS. Share the invite with the guest through a private channel.
- Have the guest join in a browser. Ask them to allow camera and microphone access, select the intended devices, and use headphones to reduce the chance of echo. Their connection quality can depend on their device and network; VDO.Ninja does not guarantee a particular result.
- Add the feed to OBS. Add the VDO.Ninja feed as a Browser Source in the appropriate OBS scene, using the URL and settings supplied by the current VDO.Ninja workflow. Arrange and size it in the canvas, then confirm that video and audio reach the intended scene and mix.
- Test before the broadcast. Check guest visibility, framing, audio levels, and echo with the actual scene and stream mix. Confirm the guest can still be heard when you switch scenes, if your audio routing depends on scene sources.
- Keep the fallback simple. If the feed fails, check the guest’s browser permissions and selected devices, then verify the VDO.Ninja link and OBS Browser Source. If time is short, use a separately prepared call or another known contribution path rather than debugging on air.
VDO.Ninja is documented as a free hosted service and also as customizable, self-hostable code. It is a bridge into production software, not an identical replacement for a managed studio, and the documentation does not establish guaranteed connection quality.

Which workflow makes sense for a documentary interview?
Choose StreamYard when guest simplicity is the priority
For an interview with a contributor who is not part of the production team, a browser studio can reduce the number of tools the guest needs to understand. The backstage arrangement also lets a host check the guest before putting them into the live program.
Choose OBS plus a bridge when production control matters more
If you need a more custom scene layout, source composition, audio filtering, transitions, or a plugin-driven workflow, OBS offers those production controls. Budget time to create and test the VDO.Ninja-to-OBS connection and to help guests with permissions and device selection.
Use a hybrid only when the extra routing earns its keep
A hybrid can suit a technical team that wants browser-based guest management and OBS downstream for production. It adds an integration to maintain, so define which system handles guest intake, scene composition, and audio before the show rather than improvising the routing live.
Remote guest troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Guest cannot enter or is not visible | Camera or microphone permission was denied, the wrong device is selected, or the guest has not been added on screen. | Have the guest review browser permissions and device selection; in StreamYard, confirm the guest is backstage and the host has added them. |
| Echo or doubled audio | Audio is playing through speakers into an open microphone, or the same feed is routed more than once. | Ask the guest to use headphones or earbuds and review the production audio routing for duplicate sources. |
| VDO.Ninja guest feed is missing in OBS | The invite/feed URL, Browser Source setup, or scene placement may be wrong. | Recheck the current VDO.Ninja links, confirm the Browser Source points to the intended feed, and verify that the source is present in the active OBS scene. |
| Guest appears but is silent | The wrong microphone may be selected, the browser may lack permission, or the feed may not be routed into the intended OBS mix. | Check the guest’s input selection and permissions, then inspect OBS audio meters and routing while the guest speaks. |
| Guest connection is unstable | The guest’s network or device may not sustain the contribution reliably. | Ask the guest to use a stronger connection and close unnecessary network-intensive apps; test again before going live. No source establishes a guaranteed quality level for the bridge. |
