For a conventional YouTube live stream, use a 16:9 frame. Two common HD sizes are 1920×1080 (1080p) and 1280×720 (720p). Choose vertical 9:16 for a mobile-first composition, or configure YouTube’s dual-format option before going live if you want horizontal and vertical versions. Aspect ratio is the frame’s shape; resolution is its pixel dimensions. They are separate choices.
Choose the frame shape for your audience
| Format | Best suited to | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Horizontal 16:9 | Conventional desktop, television, and landscape viewing | YouTube identifies 16:9 as its standard desktop aspect ratio. Common HD dimensions are 1920Ă—1080 and 1280Ă—720. |
| Vertical 9:16 | Mobile-first viewing and possible discovery in the Shorts feed | Discovery and features depend on YouTube’s eligibility and availability rules. If the source is horizontal, the default center crop can cut off content at the sides. |
| Dual horizontal and vertical | Creators who want landscape and mobile-oriented versions | Set it up before the stream starts, preview both compositions, and route each encoder output to the correct stream key if using a third-party encoder. |
YouTube’s player adapts to different video aspect ratios, but the standard desktop shape remains 16:9. For its dual-format experience, viewers browsing the Shorts feed see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version. YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance and live-stream setup guidance explain the platform behavior.
Pick a resolution that fits the production
Resolution does not determine aspect ratio by itself. A frame remains 16:9 when its width and height keep that proportion, whether it is 720p or 1080p. Use a size your production equipment and upload connection can sustain; the largest available resolution is not automatically the best choice for every stream.
- 1280Ă—720 (720p): a common HD option when a lighter stream is preferable.
- 1920Ă—1080 (1080p): a common HD option when the source and connection support more detail.
YouTube’s aspect-ratio page also lists 426×240, 640×360, 854×480, 2560×1440, 3840×2160, and 7680×4320 among standard 16:9 frame dimensions. Those are available dimensions, not a recommendation that every live stream use them. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Set bitrate and encoder details separately
Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate work together, but none changes the frame’s aspect ratio. YouTube says it detects encoder resolution and frame rate automatically by default. Its published H.264 ingest recommendations include:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not guarantees of playback quality for viewers. The figures are for H.264; YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265 (HEVC), whose recommendations vary by codec and frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the codec and output you plan to use.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, square pixels, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four seconds). YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Measure upload capacity rather than relying on download speed, and test at the intended settings. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Configure dual-format streaming before the event
YouTube Live Control Room can create horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together. By default, the vertical version is a center crop of the horizontal stream. YouTube offers center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked layouts; creators can also adjust zoom and position. Because the vertical version cannot be added after the stream has started, set the layout up in advance.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the dual-format stream before going live.
- Preview the vertical composition. Move faces, captions, essential text, and other important content away from areas the crop removes, or select a different layout.
- If using a third-party encoder, select the encoder workflow, use RTMP(S), and set a second stream key for the vertical output. Send each matching orientation to its corresponding key.
- Check both previews and stream health before the event begins.
The second stream key and separate encoder outputs apply to the third-party encoder workflow; they are not a requirement for everyone using Live Control Room. Vertical live streams have a full-screen mobile viewing experience with a scrollable live feed and may appear while viewers browse Shorts. Eligibility affects discovery and fan-funding features, so do not assume every vertical stream qualifies for every feature. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
Preflight the stream
- Choose horizontal, vertical, or dual format based on the intended viewing experience.
- For dual format, inspect both compositions and make sure the vertical crop or layout keeps essential content visible.
- Keep encoder outputs and stream keys matched to their intended orientations.
- Unless you have a reason to set manual values, use YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection.
- Confirm available upload bandwidth at the chosen bitrate, leaving the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.
- Test with representative motion and audio, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube provides further advice in its encoder settings and streaming tips.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the live stream is built from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
