The best podcast recording software depends on how you make your show: Audacity is a strong free choice for solo audio, remote interview platforms should capture each guest locally on a separate track, and a traditional DAW suits hosts who want detailed editing control. If you want recording, transcription, and editing in one workflow, an integrated platform may save handoffs. Choose by format, guest needs, editing workflow, operating system, and budget—not by a single “best overall” label.

Choose software by the job you need it to do

“Podcast recording software” can mean a browser-based guest studio, a local audio editor, or a full digital audio workstation (DAW). Those tools solve different problems. A remote studio helps capture conversations with guests; a local editor records and shapes audio on your device; a DAW offers a more involved multitrack production environment. Some products combine recording with transcription and editing, but not every workflow keeps those stages together.

  • For a solo audio show: start with a free local editor if you are comfortable recording and editing yourself.
  • For remote interviews: prioritize separate participant tracks and local recording, then confirm how the platform handles uploads, backups, and internet interruptions.
  • For detailed sound production: consider a DAW and assess its learning curve, plugins, license terms, and multitrack workflow.
  • For video, transcripts, or fewer handoffs: compare integrated tools and verify their recording, editing, and export limits.

These are use-case recommendations drawn from published product comparisons, not the result of independent hands-on testing. The detailed 2026 comparison guides are published by vendors in the category, so weigh their categorical rankings accordingly.

Best options by podcast format

Use case Options to investigate What to check before choosing
Free solo audio and local editing Audacity; GarageBand for Apple users Operating-system compatibility, manual editing effort, and export workflow.
Remote guest interviews Riverside; Zencastr; Descript/SquadCast Separate tracks, local capture, guest count, upload and backup behavior, and whether you need video.
Detailed audio editing REAPER; Adobe Audition Learning curve, license or subscription terms, plugins, and multitrack workflow.
Live video and recording StreamYard and other remote platforms Whether you need live audience distribution, and the platform’s recording and editing limits.
Integrated recording and editing Descript or an all-in-one remote platform Transcription and AI features, platform support, free-plan allowances, and export ownership.

This is a shortlist for further evaluation, not a claim that every option has been tested or that all have equivalent features. Device support, mobile and browser availability, free-tier limits, guest counts, local recording behavior, and whether SquadCast is included in a particular Descript plan can change; confirm the current terms with each provider.

What matters most for remote interviews

Separate tracks and local capture

For an interview, separate tracks make it possible to adjust each speaker independently. Local recording can also reduce the recording’s dependence on the call connection, but it does not remove the need to check the platform’s internet requirements or what happens if an upload is interrupted. In a commercial comparison article, Descript author Elise Dopson states: “Podcast recording software should record each speaker on a separate track and capture locally rather than over the call connection, which is what protects you from a guest’s bad internet.” Treat that as the author’s editorial guidance, not as an independent technical standard or study.

Guest experience and backup behavior

A remote studio is only useful if guests can join and complete the recording reliably. Check the supported devices and browsers, the number of participants allowed on the plan you would use, and whether the recording is backed up or uploaded after the session. A “local recording” label alone does not tell you how long uploads take or how failures are recovered.

Audio-only versus video

If the show is audio-only, do not pay for a video workflow you will not use without first comparing the plan limits. If you publish video or need live audience distribution as well as a recording, verify that the platform supports that production path and inspect its recording and editing limits separately.

Free software: Audacity or GarageBand?

Audacity is listed as free and available on macOS, Windows, and Linux. GarageBand is free for Apple users. Either can be a reasonable starting point for a solo host recording locally, but the right choice depends on your operating system and how you want to edit and export. Free does not mean automatic: expect to consider your editing workflow, track handling, and export steps.

For remote guest sessions, a local editor by itself is not the same thing as a guest-recording studio. You may need a separate remote capture service, then move its tracks into an editor. That extra handoff can be worthwhile if you want a free editing setup; an integrated platform may be more convenient if it combines the parts of your workflow you actually need.

When a DAW or integrated platform is a better fit

Choose a DAW for editing control

REAPER and Adobe Audition are options to investigate if you want a fuller multitrack audio-editing environment. Compare the learning curve, license or subscription terms, plugin needs, and how you will manage tracks. The available comparisons do not establish a universal winner between them.

Choose an integrated tool to reduce handoffs

Descript or an all-in-one remote platform may suit creators who value recording alongside transcription and editing. Before committing, check which transcription or AI features are included, whether the platform works on your devices, what the free plan allows, and how exports are handled. An integrated workflow can reduce transfers between apps, but only if its tools and limits fit your production.

How to compare plans without being misled by a headline price

Do not treat a comparison-page starting price as a settled or directly comparable quote. Two 2026 published snapshots give different starting prices for Riverside: the September 2026 Riverside guide lists $24 per month, while Descript’s 2026 comparison lists $15 per month. Those figures are conflicting snapshots, not reconciled official pricing; billing basis, geography, plan limits, or later changes may account for differences. Check the provider’s own current pricing page and note the billing period and included recording hours or credits before comparing total cost.

For any product, compare the plan that covers your real workflow rather than the cheapest advertised entry point. Check monthly recording or editing limits, participant caps, separate-track behavior, video needs, transcription allowances, and export terms. A nominally lower plan may not cover the recording volume or features your show requires.

A practical decision checklist

  • Are you recording alone, interviewing remote guests, or producing live video?
  • Do you need separate files for each speaker, and does the service record locally?
  • How are interrupted connections, uploads, and backups handled?
  • Do you want a separate editor, or would transcription and editing in the same platform save time?
  • Does the software support your computer, browser, or mobile device?
  • Will the guest limit and monthly recording or editing allowance cover your episodes?
  • What is the current plan cost for your region and billing period, and what limits are included?

A USB podcast microphone and a suitable recording space can be useful parts of a setup, but the comparisons do not establish a best microphone model or a requirement to buy hardware. Room conditions and sound capture affect results regardless of which software you choose.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for a different job from podcast-recording software: it keeps an uploaded video live on YouTube, rather than recording a camera or remote conversation. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
