Use the ATEM Mini Pro with YouTube Live in either of two ways: stream directly from the ATEM over Ethernet, or connect it by USB to a computer and send its webcam output through streaming software. The direct route puts the YouTube encoder connection in ATEM Software Control; the USB route lets computer software handle it. Neither is inherently more reliable according to the cited product documentation, so choose based on whether you want the ATEM or a computer to send the stream.

Choose your streaming route

Route Who sends the stream Main setup point Best fit
Direct Ethernet The ATEM Mini Pro’s built-in streaming engine ATEM Software Control output/live-stream settings You want a direct hardware path from the switcher to YouTube.
USB webcam Streaming software on a connected computer Select the ATEM as the camera source, then configure YouTube in the software You want computer software to manage the encoder workflow.

Both methods begin with your cameras and audio connected to the ATEM. Its USB connection can provide webcam output to a computer, while the Pro model can also stream directly using Ethernet, as described by Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Mini Getting Started guide.

Before you start

  • Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check that the channel can go live before the event: YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  • Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream key and, if your encoder asks for it, the server URL. The key pairs the incoming feed with the selected stream; treat it like a password.
  • Plan for upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends having 20% more outbound bandwidth than the stream bitrate, with additional headroom useful on a shared connection: YouTube’s streaming tips.
  • Prepare representative test content. Test the kind of movement and audio expected during the actual broadcast, rather than relying only on a static screen.

Route A: stream directly from the ATEM Mini Pro over Ethernet

  1. Connect your sources. Connect your video and audio sources to the ATEM Mini Pro and confirm the program output is what you intend to send.
  2. Connect Ethernet. Plug the ATEM’s Ethernet port into your router or another supported internet connection.
  3. Get the YouTube stream details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream. Copy its stream key and keep it private. YouTube explains that an encoder connects with the stream’s server URL and key in its stream setup instructions.
  4. Configure ATEM Software Control. Open its output/live-stream settings, select YouTube, choose a server, and paste the stream key. Blackmagic’s ATEM Mini manual describes setting the platform and server before starting the stream.
  5. Send a test signal. Start with bars or a standby graphic, then check for the incoming video in YouTube’s preview. Also test meaningful motion and audio; YouTube advises testing before going live in its encoder settings guidance.
  6. Publish when ready. For a scheduled stream, wait until the Live Control Room shows the preview and click Go live. Sending a signal from the ATEM does not, by itself, necessarily publish a scheduled event. Follow the publish controls shown for an immediate encoder stream.
  7. Monitor and finish. Watch stream health and check audio and video during the event. When finished, stop the ATEM stream and end the YouTube stream as appropriate.

Route B: use the ATEM as a USB webcam with computer software

  1. Connect the ATEM to the computer by USB. Blackmagic says the ATEM is recognized as a webcam. Select it as the camera or video source in your streaming application; Blackmagic notes that software such as Open Broadcaster and XSplit can use this output in its Getting Started guide.
  2. Configure YouTube in the streaming software. Choose YouTube or enter the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Confirm the details belong to the stream you intend to use.
  3. Set compatible video options. Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the output your chosen ATEM workflow actually sends and to the computer software’s supported settings. YouTube detects an encoder’s resolution and frame rate by default, and its recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  4. Test before publishing. Where appropriate, use a private or unlisted test. Check the YouTube preview with representative movement and audio, then watch stream-health messages while the software sends the feed.
  5. Go live and monitor. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and click Go live in the Live Control Room. Keep an eye on stream health and the program audio and video throughout.

YouTube encoder settings and bandwidth

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encryption where supported. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a claim that every option is available in every ATEM or computer-software workflow.

For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 as recommended bitrates. Do not treat those figures as ATEM preset values: first establish the output resolution and frame rate in the route you are using, then select compatible settings in the encoder. YouTube’s current codec- and frame-rate-specific guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Allow 20% upload bandwidth above the stream bitrate, as recommended by YouTube’s streaming tips. Other people and devices sharing the venue connection can cut into that capacity, so test the actual connection near the time of the broadcast.

Choose latency for the event

Lower latency can make audience interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube notes it can increase buffering. Favor lower latency when rapid interaction matters; choose a more tolerant mode when smooth playback is the priority. Review the options in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Protect the stream key and confirm the publish state

A stream key is a credential, not a public stream label. Do not expose it in screenshots, tutorials, overlays, or chat. If you think it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio; replace the old key in ATEM Software Control or the computer encoder before sending the next feed. See YouTube’s live-stream settings help.

For a scheduled event, distinguish the encoder connection from publication: the encoder sends a signal, YouTube displays a preview, and you then click Go live in the Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder stream instructions.

Troubleshooting

  • No incoming preview: Check that you selected the intended stream and that its URL and key match. If the key was reset after you copied it, update the encoder. For direct streaming, verify the platform, server, and key in ATEM Software Control and check the Ethernet connection. For USB streaming, confirm the software is sending from the ATEM source.
  • Preview appears, but the scheduled stream is not public: Click Go live in the Live Control Room after the preview appears.
  • Dropped frames or unstable playback: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, the available outbound bandwidth, and other users of the shared connection. Restore the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom if possible.
  • Audio or motion is wrong: Test with the sort of sound and movement the event will contain, then monitor both during the broadcast. A static test screen alone will not reveal every issue.
  • Latency is too high, or viewers experience buffering: Reconsider the latency setting against the event’s need for interaction. Lower latency may increase buffering, so a more tolerant setting can be preferable when playback stability matters more.
  • Live streaming is not enabled: If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature well before the event; YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
