To livestream an interview on YouTube, first enable livestreaming on your channel, then choose a production method: a computer webcam for a simple host setup, YouTube’s mobile-first Go live together feature for one invited guest, or an encoder for a controlled landscape layout, multiple cameras, or overlays. Schedule and rehearse the event, check both speakers’ audio and connection, and preview the stream before going live.
Choose how you’ll bring the interview on air
YouTube offers three practical routes. The right one depends on whether you need a remote guest, a conventional landscape frame, or additional production control.
| Method | Where it starts | Guest and production options | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer webcam | YouTube Studio in a computer browser | Select a webcam and microphone; the webcam workflow does not establish a native guest-compositing feature. | A solo host or a basic setup | Fewer production controls than an encoder workflow |
| Go live together | Mobile phone; you can schedule the event on desktop and start it on mobile | Invite a guest by link and admit them from a waiting room; only one guest appears at a time, and the default layout is vertical. | A quick mobile interview with one guest | Mobile-first workflow and limited layout; the guest’s connection also matters |
| Encoder | Computer software or hardware connected to YouTube Live Control Room | Can combine external audio and video; the exact remote-guest method depends on the production software. | A controlled landscape interview, multiple cameras, screen sharing, or overlays | More setup; encoder settings must suit the available connection |
The encoder route is a practical choice for a conventional landscape or more elaborate interview, based on the documented layout limits of Go live together and the production flexibility of encoders. YouTube does not explicitly rank these methods.
Check channel eligibility before planning the event
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The current getting-started guidance also says livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before interview day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guidance.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For Go live together, YouTube says the creator must be eligible, but the reviewed feature guidance does not provide a universal eligibility checklist. Confirm the feature is available to your channel in the app rather than assuming eligibility.
Set up the interview in YouTube
Option 1: Stream from a computer webcam
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Webcam.
- Enter the stream details and choose the privacy setting deliberately.
- Select the intended webcam and microphone, then check the preview before starting.
- Go live when the picture and sound are ready.
This browser-based route does not require separate encoding software. It is a straightforward choice when one person is hosting from a computer.

Option 2: Invite a guest with Go live together
- Create or edit a mobile live and enable Go live together. You can schedule the event on desktop if needed, but the host starts it from a phone.
- Enter the event details and copy the guest invitation link. Send it privately to your guest.
- Have the guest open the link and reach the waiting room. Admit them when both sides are ready, and test their sound and picture before starting.
- Start the live from the host’s phone. Only one guest can be on screen at a time; the layout defaults to vertical.
The host can see analytics in Studio; guest analytics are not available to the guest through this feature. Read YouTube’s Go live together instructions.
Option 3: Produce the interview with an encoder
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream and set its title, audience details, privacy, and schedule.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Connect the camera, microphone, and any other equipment the production needs.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and stream health, then select Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
Treat the stream key like a password: give it only to the production system that needs it, and reset it if it is exposed. When supported by your encoder, YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions and manage stream settings.

Schedule the watch page and brief your guest
- In Live Control Room, open Manage → Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse appropriate prior settings.
- Set the event details and privacy intentionally. YouTube notes that privacy defaults differ for users aged 13–17 and users 18 or older, so verify the setting shown for your account.
- Share the scheduled watch-page link with viewers. An upcoming event may appear for viewers, who can choose Notify me.
- Send the guest the start time and time zone, joining link or instructions, expected device orientation, microphone and headphone plan, interview order, and a backup way to contact you.
The guest briefing is a production recommendation, not a YouTube requirement. YouTube’s stream management and settings guidance covers scheduling and event settings.
Rehearse the audio, picture, and connection
- Test realistic conditions. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Check that each person is audible, framed correctly, and able to hear the other without distracting echo.
- Confirm the selected inputs. Check the microphone and camera in the browser or encoder, not just on the device. Speak at interview volume and listen to both sides.
- Measure upload capacity. YouTube recommends keeping outgoing bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving about 20% headroom. Where a backup stream is configured, account for the primary and backup bitrates together before adding that headroom. A speed test should measure upload speed.
- For an encoder, allow time. YouTube recommends setting it up at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live, and test encoder failover if you have configured a backup.
- Monitor during the broadcast. Keep Live Control Room visible, or use its compact Live Control Panel where available, to watch audio, video, stream health, and chat.
YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” A built-in microphone can be enough to begin; an external microphone is an optional upgrade for clearer speech. Headphones or a headset can help with audio monitoring, but do not guarantee that echo will be eliminated. YouTube’s streaming tips, stream settings guidance, and equipment guidance explain setup considerations.

End the stream and verify the replay
End the broadcast in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, then stop the encoder as your workflow requires. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Afterward, check the channel’s Live tab to confirm the replay is present and usable. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers ending and archiving streams.
Common interview livestream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You can’t start a live | Livestreaming is not enabled, the channel is not verified, a restriction applies, or first-time activation is still pending. | Check channel verification and live-stream status in Studio well ahead of the event; allow up to 24 hours for initial activation. |
| The guest invitation doesn’t work | The creator may not have access to Go live together, the guest may not have reached the waiting room, or the host is trying to start from desktop. | Confirm the feature is available, resend the invitation link, have the guest join the waiting room, and start the event from the host’s phone. |
| The guest or host cannot be heard | The wrong microphone may be selected, the input may be muted, or the guest’s connection or device audio may be failing. | Check the selected microphone and mute state at both ends; test speech before going live and use the backup contact method if the guest drops. |
| Echo or distracting feedback | Audio from a speaker may be returning through a microphone, or monitoring may be routed incorrectly. | Check headphone and speaker routing at both ends, then repeat the sound test. Headphones can help, but are not a guarantee against echo. |
| Video stutters or the stream health degrades | Outgoing bitrate may be too high for the available upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. | Check upload capacity, leave roughly 20% headroom above the total outgoing bitrate, and test the same movement and video settings planned for the interview. |
| Encoder preview never appears | The encoder may have the wrong stream URL or key, may not be sending, or may be using settings the connection cannot sustain. | Check the URL and key in the encoder, confirm it is running, and review Live Control Room’s incoming status before selecting Go live. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| The layout is vertical or only one guest is visible | This is the documented default orientation and guest limit of Go live together. | Use an encoder-based production if the interview needs a landscape composition or more than one guest visible at once. |
Or let it run in the cloud
