Amazon EC2, Google Cloud Compute Engine and Hetzner Cloud Servers are self-managed VM alternatives. Choose based on whether you need a configurable server or simply a reliable way to keep a prerecorded stream going.
Choose by workload: VM control or a managed continuous stream?
A virtual machine is infrastructure, not a finished streaming service. With Azure, EC2, Compute Engine or Hetzner, you choose and manage the VM, install and configure the encoder, provide the media, monitor the stream and plan how it recovers. Microsoft Learn notes that Azure VM customers must configure, patch and install the software that runs on the machine (Azure VM overview).
If your goal is to broadcast a live production—with an operator controlling sources, cameras, audio or graphics—an encoder on a VM can provide useful control. If the channel continuously plays videos from a prepared library, a managed prerecorded-video streaming tool may avoid much of the server and encoder administration. Those are different architectures, not interchangeable VM brands.
Start with the content
- Live production or custom software: compare self-managed VMs or a managed broadcast-processing service.
- Continuous playback of uploaded recordings: compare managed looping services as well as VMs; a general-purpose server may add operational work you do not need.
- Local encoder only: OBS is encoder software, not cloud hosting. You still supply a computer or VM, network capacity and monitoring.
Alternatives to an Azure VM
For like-for-like infrastructure alternatives, compare EC2, Compute Engine and Hetzner Cloud Server. For a prerecorded channel, put managed streaming services in a separate category. YouTube’s encoder directory describes encoder options, while its live encoder setup guide explains that an encoder supports workflows such as external audio/video hardware, screen sharing and multi-camera production. A listing in the directory is not, by itself, an endorsement or proof of a provider’s service terms.
What self-managed cloud streaming requires
Server and encoder operations
For any VM provider, the operator must select an instance that can encode the chosen format at the target resolution and frame rate, install the encoder and media tools, configure storage and networking, protect stream credentials, and monitor the process. Establish how the encoder starts after a reboot and how it restarts after a crash or dropped connection. Do not assume a VM size will run a particular OBS or FFmpeg workload without validating it against the encoder, codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to use.
Recovery and availability design
A single VM can fail, lose connectivity or require maintenance. Azure’s reliability guidance discusses transient faults and zone or region failures; a single zonal VM is not, by itself, resilient to a zone outage. Microsoft documents a 99.99% connectivity statement for at least one VM when two or more instances span two or more availability zones in the same region. That describes a specific infrastructure configuration, not an end-to-end promise that a YouTube stream remains live (Azure reliability guidance).

Redundancy usually means additional instances and a design that can fail over or restart the encoder. Hetzner’s 99.9% monthly Cloud Server commitment likewise has defined exclusions and a credit process; it does not guarantee that your encoder application or YouTube broadcast stays live (Hetzner Cloud Server SLA). Compare the scope and exclusions of each provider’s current terms rather than treating infrastructure SLA percentages as equivalent channel-uptime figures.

Set the stream format and network capacity
The VM brand is only part of the delivery path. Choose an encoder format compatible with your production and YouTube, then provision enough sustained outbound capacity for the bitrate, plus headroom for network variation and other traffic. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health in its encoder setup guidance.

These are YouTube-published recommended encoder bitrates, not a guarantee of required VM bandwidth or successful delivery. Check the current YouTube table for the full resolution, frame-rate, codec and keyframe recommendations before configuring the encoder. A representative stream test is more informative than a VM’s advertised network maximum alone.

Estimate total cost for your actual stream
There is no universal cheapest provider on the available evidence: an all-in comparison needs a defined region, instance, stream format, uptime design and service terms. Azure says VM compute pricing varies by size and operating system, with storage charged separately (Azure VM pricing overview). EC2, Compute Engine and Hetzner totals likewise depend on configuration and usage. Do not compare a headline compute price with the cost of a managed streaming service as though they cover the same work.
Build a like-for-like worksheet
- Provider region and the instance size or service plan available there.
- Resolution, frame rate, codec, actual encoded bitrate and expected operating hours.
- Disk or media-library storage, backups and any extra storage charges.
- Outbound data transfer and any applicable public IP or networking charges. Confirm how your provider bills the traffic from the encoder to YouTube ingest.
- Managed encoder or broadcast-service fees, if applicable.
- Recovery design: a spare instance, multiple zones, monitoring or other measures required to meet your continuity target.
- Quotas, regional capacity, SLA scope and exclusions, and any credits or limits that apply to your account.
Use the same region, output settings, run hours and recovery target for each candidate. Ask the provider or use its current calculator for a workload-specific estimate; the available published information does not establish comparable all-in monthly totals.

The stream drops when the VM restarts
Check whether the encoder is configured to start automatically and whether its process supervisor or restart policy is working. A service that works only after a manual login is not a recovery plan. Test a reboot and confirm the stream returns in YouTube Studio.
YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health
Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. Check sustained outbound capacity, packet loss and competing network traffic; lower the output settings for a controlled test if the path cannot sustain the target. Use RTMPS and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.

The VM cannot encode the selected output reliably
Encoding load depends on codec, resolution, frame rate and the encoder’s configuration. Validate the chosen VM with the actual workload and a representative test; do not infer encoding capacity from the provider name or a generic VM description.
The estimate is much higher than the VM’s advertised price
Review storage, outbound transfer, networking, managed-service charges and redundancy. Continuous operation can make data transfer and a second recovery instance material parts of the total; compare the full workload rather than compute alone.
The channel is live but the content raises rights or monetization issues
A technically successful stream does not establish that you have permission to use every video, music track or image in it, nor that the channel meets YouTube monetization policies. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies, and use content you have the rights to broadcast.
