To run a 24/7 YouTube live stream on an Azure virtual machine, run an encoder on a Linux VM and send its output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. YouTube receives the stream; the VM does the encoding and transmission. The schedule can be continuous, but that is not an uptime guarantee: the source, encoder, VM, network, or YouTube ingest can interrupt it.

Before you build the Azure setup, check YouTube eligibility

Confirm that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and test well before the planned start.

In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public notes, screenshots, source files shared with others, or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Choose where the source and encoding will live

For prerecorded documentaries or other media, the source file must remain accessible for the full broadcast, and the encoder must be configured to keep supplying content. For a live camera or other live input, that input must reach the encoder continuously. A VM does not create or capture source material by itself.

Architecture What it means Trade-off
Source and encoder on the Azure VM The media is stored on or made available to the VM, which encodes and sends it to YouTube. Fewer dependencies on a separate encoding computer, but the VM needs enough storage and sustained outbound capacity.
Encode elsewhere and send the feed to the VM A separate computer or production system creates a live feed that reaches the Azure VM, which then sends it to YouTube. Adds another device and network path to operate; the source-to-VM connection becomes an additional point of failure.

For a prerecorded, unattended channel, keeping the media and encoder in the cloud avoids relying on a home computer or connection. For a production requiring live cameras, audio mixing, or other real-time inputs, plan for the separate capture and production equipment as well.

Create and secure the Azure Linux VM

  1. Choose a region and Linux image. In the Azure portal, create a Linux virtual machine in a region appropriate for your audience, source location, and budget. Select a VM size only after checking its published network bandwidth and your planned output bitrate.
  2. Use SSH-key administration. Configure key-based SSH access rather than relying on a reusable password. Keep the private key secure and available only to administrators who need access.
  3. Restrict the network security group. Allow inbound SSH only from the administrative IP addresses or network ranges that require it. The encoder sends the broadcast out to YouTube, so do not open a public media-ingest port unless your chosen architecture specifically requires one.
  4. Decide whether a public IP is needed. A public IP can provide inbound administrative access and predictable outbound connectivity, and Azure may charge for it. Whether to assign one depends on how you will administer the VM and design its egress path; do not assume it is free or required in every design.
  5. Install and configure your encoder. Choose an encoder compatible with your Linux image and workflow. The exact installation commands depend on the distribution and encoder. Verify them against the encoder’s and distribution’s current documentation before running them; a package or service command cannot safely be inferred from the VM setup alone.

Configure the encoder for YouTube Live

Set the encoder to send to the RTMPS stream URL from YouTube Live Control Room and supply the stream key securely. RTMPS is RTMP transported over TLS/SSL and is YouTube’s recommended encrypted option. Do not treat unencrypted RTMP as an equivalent security choice.

Use a video and audio format supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Configure constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds between keyframes.

Choose resolution and bitrate based on the source, YouTube’s current recommendations for that output quality, and the VM’s sustained network capacity. There is no single bitrate that fits every resolution, frame rate, motion level, or connection. The VM must have egress headroom above the encoded bitrate for transport overhead and any other traffic using its network interfaces. Check the exact bandwidth specification for the VM size in the selected region; Azure accounts for outbound traffic across attached network interfaces against the VM’s allocated bandwidth.

YouTube transcodes a live feed into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not remove the need to send a valid, stable input feed. Test with representative audio and motion rather than a still image or short, atypical clip.

Keep the encoder running and plan for recovery

For a continuous channel, configure the encoder to launch when the VM starts and use a process supervisor or equivalent management approach to detect and restart a stopped process. The exact command, reconnect flags, loop behavior, and service-unit configuration depend on the encoder and Linux distribution. Validate those details against authoritative documentation for your chosen software instead of copying an unverified recipe.

Test recovery deliberately before relying on the setup. Check behavior after an encoder exit, a VM restart, a temporary network interruption, a changed or expired stream key, and the source reaching its end. A process restart alone does not guarantee that the source resumes at the intended point or that YouTube accepts the reconnect.

Test the stream and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test. Use representative content and the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that video appears, audio is present and in sync, and the ingest is stable before treating the stream as ready.
  3. Observe the VM while it runs. Monitor the encoder process, network egress, and available storage. Confirm that the source continues and that the process does not stop when the initial media segment ends.
  4. Repeat the recovery tests. Verify the outcomes of the failure cases in the previous section, and document the steps an operator must take if a restart does not restore the feed.

Plan event boundaries and archives

YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. Do not assume an indefinite 24/7 broadcast will become one complete archived video. Decide how event boundaries, any planned restarts, and recordings should be handled, and verify the resulting archive behavior in the channel before adopting that schedule.

Estimate the full Azure cost

A continuously running VM consumes compute resources continuously. Build the estimate for the chosen region and configuration in Azure’s current calculator or portal estimate rather than relying on a generic monthly figure. Include the VM size and Linux image, OS and data disks, any public IP, and applicable outbound data-transfer charges. The output bitrate and hours streamed affect transfer use, while higher bandwidth requirements may affect the VM size you select.

Review the estimate for the exact deployment before starting a long-running broadcast. The required VM size and total cost cannot be determined without a target resolution and bitrate, region, storage needs, and egress design.

Or let it run in the cloud
