Yes, a Contabo VPS can be a plausible host for one 1080p YouTube Live stream if your selected instance sustains the required outbound bitrate—and, if it is encoding the video, has enough compute for the job. YouTube recommends H.264 ingest at 14 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Contabo lists VPS/VDS port speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, but that range is not a guarantee of the sustained speed or encoding performance of a particular instance. Contabo’s support guidance also allows throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive usage.
What decides whether a Contabo VPS can stream 1080p?
There are two separate questions: can the VPS send the stream to YouTube reliably, and can it encode the video at the resolution and frame rate you want? A VPS that only relays an already encoded stream has a different workload from one running an encoder such as OBS. The available provider specifications do not establish the compute performance or hardware-encoder availability of any particular Contabo instance, so neither task should be assumed to work just because a plan advertises a certain port speed.
Contabo states that VPS/VDS port speeds range from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. It also says there is no default bandwidth limit on VPS, VDS, and dedicated servers, while reserving the right to throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage under its fair-use policy. Check the current terms and the exact port speed for your plan and region rather than treating the top of the range as your server’s guaranteed throughput. Contabo’s support page describes checking outgoing network usage, including per-process monitoring options for Linux and Windows.
How much upload speed does 1080p YouTube Live need?
Resolution alone does not determine the bitrate: frame rate and codec matter. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends these H.264 ingest bitrates:

| Target | YouTube-recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not measurements of Contabo performance. A nominal port rate above the target does not prove that your instance, network route, and workload can sustain it. Leave practical headroom for stream stability and other server traffic, then measure the VPS’s outgoing rate while the intended stream is running.
YouTube’s live encoder page lists RTMP and RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). It recommends RTMPS. Use the settings appropriate to your encoder and stream; the bitrate figures above are specifically for H.264. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and guidance.

Encoding on the VPS or relaying an existing stream
If the VPS encodes the video
The VPS must handle both the encoding workload and the upload. Encoding a moving documentary, especially at 1080p60, can demand materially more compute than forwarding an already compressed feed. The cited provider information does not specify the performance of a particular virtual CPU configuration or whether a chosen instance has a usable hardware encoder. Confirm the resources and software available on your exact instance, then test the actual source material at the intended frame rate. Do not infer encoding capacity from the network port specification.
If the VPS only relays an encoded stream
A relay avoids encoding the video on the VPS, but it still needs a stable incoming feed and enough sustained outbound capacity to send that feed to YouTube. Validate both legs of the route and monitor outgoing usage. The evidence available here does not establish performance for a particular relay setup or Contabo plan.

How to validate your VPS before an event
- Confirm the exact plan and region. Check the instance’s listed port speed and applicable traffic and fair-use terms with Contabo. Do not assume every VPS has the same specification.
- Choose the target precisely. Decide whether the stream is 1080p30 or 1080p60 and whether the VPS will encode or relay. For H.264, use YouTube’s respective recommended ingest rate of 14 Mbps or 17 Mbps as the starting reference.
- Measure while the workload is active. Run a representative stream and inspect the VPS’s outgoing network usage. Contabo recommends monitoring outgoing usage and documents per-process options for Linux and Windows.
- Test representative content. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then checking stream health. A static test image does not represent a documentary with motion and sound.
- Run a full rehearsal. Keep the stream active long enough to reveal recurring congestion or resource limits, and monitor both encoder status and YouTube’s stream-health feedback before relying on the server for an event.
YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate, but a brief speed test is not a substitute for a sustained rehearsal from the VPS using the intended encoder or relay path. No independent Contabo 1080p streaming benchmark or plan-specific performance result is established here.
Common failure symptoms and what to check
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: check the actual outgoing rate from the instance under load, other processes using the network, and the route to YouTube. Recheck the plan’s actual port specification and fair-use terms.
- The stream drops or the encoder cannot keep up: determine whether the bottleneck is encoding or network delivery. If encoding on the VPS, inspect CPU or encoder load at the intended frame rate; if relaying, verify the incoming feed as well as outgoing traffic.
- 1080p30 works but 1080p60 does not: 60 fps has a higher YouTube-recommended H.264 ingest bitrate—17 Mbps versus 14 Mbps for 30 fps—and also increases the encoding workload if the VPS is doing the encode. Test the desired mode rather than extrapolating from the other one.
- Performance changes during a long broadcast: monitor outgoing usage over time and check whether other workloads or unusually high or disruptive usage are involved. Contabo says its fair-use policy permits throttling in such circumstances.
When a cloud streaming service is simpler
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than to run a custom VPS encoder or relay, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
