Your bill depends on the instance and region, operating system, hours billed, video bitrate, network route, storage, and any extra services. For a setup that sends a feed from EC2 to YouTube, estimate the EC2 runtime and the source’s outbound data—not the bandwidth needed to serve every YouTube viewer.
What determines the monthly EC2 bill?
Break the estimate into separate components. An always-on schedule tells you how many hours the server runs, but not its hourly rate or how AWS treats its network traffic.
- Compute: the selected instance type, region, operating system, and pricing model.
- Source transfer: the bytes sent from EC2 to YouTube, calculated from the stream’s bitrate and runtime, then priced according to the applicable AWS transfer treatment.
- Storage and extras: EBS volumes, a public IPv4 address if applicable, monitoring, snapshots, and other services used by the deployment.
- Viewer delivery: usually not an EC2 cost when the stream goes directly to YouTube, which distributes playback to viewers. If AWS also delivers the video to viewers, model those services separately.
A reliable quote therefore needs the region, instance, OS, stream bitrate, storage, network path, and pricing model. AWS recommends its EC2 pricing page and pricing tools for configuration-specific estimates; prices vary by location and setup and may change.
How to estimate compute for a 24/7 month
Choose the instance and pricing model
Select the AWS region, instance type, operating system, and pricing model that match the workload. A stream may need CPU capacity for encoding as well as sending the feed, but the title alone does not establish which instance is suitable. Avoid choosing an instance based only on the fact that it will run continuously.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Multiply the rate by billed runtime
Use the applicable hourly rate multiplied by actual billed hours. For planning, a 24/7 month is approximately 730 hours; the actual calendar month is shorter or longer. AWS says On-Demand use is billed from instance launch until it is stopped or terminated. For listed operating systems, billing is per second with a 60-second minimum.
Include only the runtime and pricing terms that apply to your configuration. A stopped instance does not keep accruing instance runtime charges, but separately billed resources—such as storage—may still cost money.
How much data does the stream send?
Calculate the source traffic from bitrate
For a steady stream, estimate data volume as bitrate × seconds ÷ 8. At 6 Mbps for 30 days, the calculation is 6 megabits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 = 1,944,000 megabytes, or about 243,000 decimal GB (243 TB), before protocol overhead. This is a data-volume calculation, not an AWS price; the encoder’s actual bitrate and billing conventions can change the result.

That example shows why a continuous multi-megabit source can involve hundreds of terabytes of monthly outbound traffic. Do not assume the traffic is free or infer a dollar total from volume alone: check how the specific network path is billed and apply the current regional rate and any applicable account-wide allowance.
Check AWS internet data transfer treatment
AWS lists 100 GB per month of internet data transfer out free, aggregated across AWS services and regions, with stated exceptions. Confirm the current terms and whether they apply to your account and traffic path before subtracting an allowance or pricing the remainder. The EC2 pricing page also points to separate EBS and CloudWatch pricing, so an instance-only rate does not include those charges.
Separate YouTube ingest from viewer delivery
When EC2 sends a live feed directly to YouTube, the source-to-YouTube transfer is the relevant stream path to estimate. YouTube, rather than your EC2 instance, serves playback to its viewers. Do not multiply EC2 egress by your YouTube audience unless AWS is actually distributing the video to those viewers.

Some AWS live-video architectures add MediaLive, MediaPackage, or CloudFront to encode, package, originate, or deliver video. Those services are not automatic requirements for sending a feed to YouTube. AWS’s implementation guide gives an example of a one-hour event with 1,000 viewers totaling $69.74 under its stated US East (N. Virginia) assumptions, including $67.24 for CloudFront distribution. That example describes AWS viewer delivery; it is not the price of a single EC2 encoder sending to YouTube.

Choose a bitrate for the intended output
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends H.264 video bitrates of 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The source bitrate affects the data sent from EC2. It is not the same as viewer playback bitrate when YouTube performs distribution and transcoding for different devices and networks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the relevant resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.

Enter the server URL and stream key
YouTube’s encoder setup requires its server URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, share it in logs or screenshots, or leave it exposed in a publicly accessible configuration. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live control room and update the encoder configuration.
Build a complete cost estimate
- Record the configuration: note region, instance type, operating system, pricing model, expected uptime, and whether EC2 encodes the source or only relays it.
- Estimate compute: multiply the applicable rate by the actual expected billed hours. Use about 730 hours only as a monthly planning approximation.
- Calculate source bytes: convert the intended bitrate and runtime into data volume, allowing for protocol overhead and real bitrate variation.
- Price the network path: determine whether the traffic is internet data transfer out or another route, then check current regional pricing and applicable account allowances.
- Add non-compute items: include EBS, public IPv4 if used, monitoring, snapshots, and any other AWS resources in the architecture.
- Add viewer delivery only if AWS does it: include media and CDN services only when they are actually part of the deployment. A direct YouTube destination does not make AWS viewer distribution necessary.
Alternatives for keeping a YouTube stream running

Common estimating mistakes
- Pricing only the instance: compute does not include transfer, storage, IP, monitoring, snapshots, or services outside the instance.
- Using the audience size to estimate EC2 egress: that overstates source traffic when YouTube serves viewers. Count viewer delivery only if AWS actually handles it.
- Assuming a 6 Mbps stream has a known AWS bill: bitrate estimates bytes, not the applicable route or price. Check the account’s transfer treatment and current regional rates.
- Treating an AWS media-delivery example as an encoder quote: examples involving CloudFront or other services may include viewer delivery, which is a different architecture from EC2-to-YouTube ingest.
- Ignoring bitrate changes: actual encoder output and protocol overhead can make observed transfer differ from the steady-bitrate calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube charge you to send a live stream to YouTube?
The cited YouTube encoder documentation specifies setup and streaming recommendations, not a charge for ingest. This article does not establish YouTube’s full account-specific eligibility or policy requirements.
Can I get one exact EC2 monthly total from the stream bitrate alone?
No. Bitrate helps estimate source data volume, but an EC2 total also requires the instance, region, operating system, billed runtime, network route, storage, and any other services.
